Nice farm Ray. I came here from a recent Hermitcraft video showing this design. I liked it because it's simple and it gets the job done. I don't need or want to build a gigantic farm that produces millions of drops an hour. This is sweet and simple that gives enough items from the farm for me to use.

For those of you having trouble with the Axolotls getting stuck at the fence: He will tell you to check the description but it doesn't cover it. You need to either use top slabs in front of the fence with packed ice underneath for the items to slide across or just use hoppers. I've tested it multiple times and the little buggers get stuck every time without doing this.
One of my lil tards got under a slab wtf. But other than him this comment helped a ton
even with this change i've noticed my axolotl disappearing frequently (they are named). ive also light up the farm so drowned dont spawn (as they can kill the axolotls) i feel like theyre getting stuck under the slabs above the ice. any ideas to stop this but keep items flowing in?
I used hoppers but they're still getting stuck. Any specific fix?

In survival, when you start pillar jumping to build your afk platform above the clouds, DON'T start from the bottom of the pool or it WILL mess up your top water stream and you'll have to redo the whole thing.
Instead, mark your coords and start from somewhere above the pool by making an L-shape.
This is still working for me in 1.20.1 (built it last weekend) but you definitely need at least 12-15 Axolotls as they attack very slowly. Try and find a decent wide section of river and use your f3 screen to figure out the best position of your "rectangle" as you will get the surrounding biome sort of following the shape of the river spawn. You probably won't get it 100% in river tiles but try and get the most you possibly can by testing and adjusting before you build and dig. Also, you must use the afk box to get any kind of decent spawn rate on squids. Rate is definitely not what was claimed but if you don't mind letting it run overnight you will get about a double chest every 8-10 hours. Going to do a wither rose farm next but if you just want something simple this farm will still work. Thanks Ray, good stuff!

You can name Axolotl without name tags. Just rename the bucket with the anvil it will name the Axolotl that name once put in the water

Never thought I'd find an axolotl-powered bone meal farm.
To all newer people, this farm still works. It’s just harder to find a spot for it, I had to remove a little bit of water for it. Just make sure to spam axolotls because they attack slower.
Don't you need to afk a little bit lower than 128 blocks to also cover corners of the pool?
A very interesting farm
If you go up 128/64 blocks above the center of the farm, wouldn't that mean the corners will be more than 128/64 blocks away, so the mobs might despawn in the corners? Would this reduce the item output just a bit, or does the AI/size of the mobs prevent them from actually being too far away and despawning?
Maybe I don't understand spawning spheres but shouldn't your afk spot be less than 128 blocks above the bottom of the tank? Wouldn't putting the edge of the sphere there put a bunch of bottom water sources in the tank outside of of the curvature of the spawning radius or does that not have a huge effects on rates?
Would this farm work if I dug the farm down to Y:40 to get glow squid as well? Would both normal squid and glow squid spawn assuming I make the farm dark enough with a roof so the glow squid actually spawn?
Press F1 when zooming with a spyglass to get rid of that texture which obstructs your vision.

I thought this was anew snapshot becuse I read squid and thought it was the glow squid ... still great vidio just wasent what I was expecting .
For some reason my axolotls wait some good 15 seconds after the squid spawn before attacking it
even though i put 30 axolotls in there it doesnt change, the axolotls wait and then one of the 30 attacks one squid by himself

at 128 blocks from the bottom of the farm I can see a lot of squids that are not moving (just spinning on themselves) and the axolots are not attacking them.
I was wondering could you do a video on a updated iron farm, I’m on console and idk how to figure that out without wasting my time building it

You probably don't have too many hoppers in the early game but name tags have everyone so use them ^^
Just a video making tip, it helps to keep the intro shorter than 40 seconds.
Looking it up and listening to the pronunciation, it's: [aːˈʃoːloːtɬ]
Which sounds kind of like "asholodt", but I would definitely recommend listening to it being said, ofc I wouldn't expect you to pronounce it exactly the same, but apparently it's not how we would normally pronounce axolotl with the x being more of an sh, and the tl being more of a dt.
ive always heard it as axolotl - x tl, even from axolotl owners. pretty pedantic, considering accents and language in general allows for people to pronounce things that mean the same thing, quite differently.
@@wyr77 I don't see the pedantic nature. I admitted to it not being how we would normally pronounce it, and stated that I don't expect identical pronunciation (and I also don't even expect him to pronounce it differently at all, but that I admit I didn't make clear).
It was meant to be more collaborative as I myself didn't know it was pronounced that way until shortly before my above comment, and I was like "hey, apparently the pronunciation is _a lot_ different than what we've been saying".

you dont need to nametag the axolotls; any axolotls placed by a player from a bucket wont despawn (so if breeding, make sure to pick them up and drop them in once again)

Well, shoot. I was really hoping this would of worked because I wanted some ink sacs for trading but the axolotls won't attack the squid. I even dragged a squid in a box with the axolotl, afked for over an hour, and came back only to find the squid alive and the axolotl gone. Did they change axolotls or something? Is there a better squid farm and one that doesn't use allys?
@@RaysWorks Yes, I check the other farms, however the axolotl still doesn't attack the squid. Curious though, is the reason it didn't attack the squid because it was one vs. one, and in your videos it's multiple axolotl vs. one squid?
@@RaysWorks Hmmm, the only mods I'm using are: Create, Falling Tree's, JEI, Light Overlay, Litematica, MHB, Mod Menu, and Xaero's World/Mini Map. Unless there is something in those mods, I don't think any of them effect game play or mechanics. Do you think?
Seems like the axolotls like to pathfind to the water collection. They would get stuck staring at the wall, so i just did hoppers and it stopped.
I put a half slab in front of the top half of the wall, and for good measure put packed ice in the row directly below, and that 'appears' to have resolved that issue
You need to have your render distance at 16 chunks and entity distance at 500 for this farm to work

I replicated this farm in my survival world but despite using nametags my Axolotl keep despawning or disappearing after long AFK periods.

I think the name tags shouldn't be necessary. Isn't it the case that if you pick up a fish and place it somewhere else, that fish is considered as a pet (without name-tagging), and never de-spawns? It should be the same with Axolotls; otherwise picked up Axolotls will de-spawn which makes no sense.
I builded the farm, but now the axolotls keep their time, before killing the squids, sometimes the squids dont get killed at all. Any ideas?

Right, so ive followed all the steps but the squids are not spawning. It's in River biome, between the 64-45 level for the spawn rate. I also dried up most of the river near the farm, but the squids arent even spawning in those rivers as well. Could people being near oceans affect the spawn rate of squids on a realm?
Nevermind, turns out there was a cave that prevented squid spawns haha. Good video :)
in 1.17.1 (idk if that matters) i made this farm on a multiplayer server and 90% of the time the axelotles are just swimming next to the squids instead of the squids. any way to fix this?

Buy glass blocks off librarian craft glass panes and sell cartographer if u have 1 emeral villager hall

I did everything from the video and got 2 axylotils but almost no squid are spawning? And salmon are spawning as well :// ?? I got like 12 ink sacs in 30 mins... when i didnt have the axylotils in there were lots of squid but now nothing is happening? Pls help , and idk how to spell axylotils
I'm only getting about 400 ink sacs an hour compared to the ~1500 stated in the updated video in the description. Do I have to use more axolotls now like you do in the updated video? (Since you said you wouldn't recommend putting over 10 @ 9:14 in this old video)

Why are my axolotls not attacking the squid when I'm on top of the afk platform?
My ink farm is broken in 1.17. For no apparent reason. No squid spawn inside river water blocks. Which is weird. Even other places produce almost to none squids. I got axolotls and glow squid but bit regular. Any idea? They are passive mobs. I got regular mobs as well. So I can't figure it out. My world is 8 or 9 years old and it worked fine in 1.16.5. So fast the hoppers almost county catch up. Now nothing. Very strange.

It's very interesting how Axolotls can be used in farms. I'm surprised the Axolotl doesn't teleported to players.
They can't be tamed, so it makes sense that they don't teleport.
