The first time I heard about colostrum collection before birth was right before my last son was born.
I had Gestational Diabetes, and shortly before he was born, I read that it could be beneficial to collect some due to the increased risk of low blood sugar.
I was about to start doing it when I spontaneously went into labor at 37 weeks. He had some possible blood sugar issues (long story). I wish I’d had some colostrum.
4 years later, I see so much more about colostrum harvesting. I recommend it regularly. I think there are so many reasons why it can be beneficial.
But guess what? It’s not required. If you don’t have a freezer filled with syringes of colostrum - it’s okay (in fact, I don’t even recommend a freezer filled with colostrum). If you find the process difficult or stressful or even awkward - you don’t have to do it.
There are some women that I absolutely recommend this practice for. And there are some women who didn’t realize they’d need it and are grateful they did.
But if you are sitting there seeing all these videos about colostrum harvesting and are worrying you are somehow behind - you aren’t.
