Garts was such a pure skater, it's ridiculous how fast he was. Explosive start, insane travel speed. And to boot, he could fire the puck going at mach 10 as accurately as anyone in the league going half his speed.

Prime Gartner or Bondra is faster than every guy in modern NHL. The same way prime Macinnis or Iafrate hit the puck harder than anyone today, probably even at 55. And also the same way Probert or Domi knock any of the new guys senseless. 90's hockey was where it's at.

No disrespect to Glenn Anderson but I wish Gartner wasn't traded for him in 1994. I would have loved to have seen Gartner hoist the cup with the Rangers that year. At least they gave him a ring, but it's sad he never got to hold the cup.

Fun to watch this event.... though it should be regulated more. The players sticks can stop the clock which shouldn't be considered part of the body. There is another video up showing Fedorovs body was ahead of Gartners at the finish. Also, this past year Larkin getting a start from the blue line before the time started at center ice was weird. Didn't think it should have counted as the record.

    • @rcoveyduc

I'm not sure what the regulations were then, but in 2017 they go by the body not the stick.

If you look carefully you'll notice that they start a stick length from the red line, that's why it makes sense that they were able to stop the clock with their sticks as well

Mike Gartner at 37 years old with ankle breaker old floppy leather skates is faster than 99% of the NHL. Today's players have custom molded skates...CUSTOM MOLDED and they can't keep up with an old guy from the 90s wearing skates that are 75% heavier. Let that sink in. Yet we're told that players today are "better than ever" and "faster than ever". Yeah...right. 80s and 90s NHL was the GREATEST ERA in hockey history.

No, it was Keenan. He hated Gartner's guts. Messier and Gartner go way back to the old WHA days where they played together. They're friends. Keenan was a great coach but very unstable and nasty at times. He didn't like Leetch either and wanted to trade him for Chelios in 94, but thankfully Neil Smith didn't listen to that idiotic suggestion.

Early to mid 40s is when men experience significant physical decline. If you keep yourself in peak physical condition you'll decline more in speed in the 5 years between ages 40 to 45 than the 20 in ages 20 to 40.
