If you are installing or have installed a rear hub motor conversion kit on your bike, you will find that these motors are work horses that will last a long time and are relatively maintenance free.
However here are some tips to insure a great problem free ride every time you ride.
The first is your spokes. Do this before your very first ride and check every couple of months. Your hub motor spokes are shorter than a normal bikes due to the size of the motor relative to the size of the wheel. You will also notice that the spokes are about twice the thickness of a regular bikes spoke to help protect that amount of power on your drive train. Check every spoke by touch on each side of the wheel to make sure that they all have the same amount of tension. If one feels loose you should have a spoke tool that is available at any bike shop or on line. I mark the correct width for my spokes with a piece of white tape so that I can quickly find the opening that tightens my wheel. A couple of clockwise turns should be enough to do the trick.
When the motors leave the factory there is a lot of tension on the spokes and in order to help break in the wheel apply a good bike grease lubricant to each spoke where it attaches to the rim. Make sure to really push the grease in so that it goes inside the inner wall of the rim. You should only have to do this about twice a year. It reduces metal to metal noises and helps lubricate your spokes. When done lubricating the spokes, make sure to apply a teflon lubricant to your cassette, chain and rear deraileur.
An often over looked maintenance tip on e-bikes is tire pressure. The bike is overall heavier and therefore is absorbing more pressure on each ride. It makes it even more important to constantly check by touch whether your tires are inflated. Get a good pump that can work with both presta and shrader valves.
Whether you ride road or off road your cassette will pick up a lot of dirt that impacts the chains ability to move freely and efficiently. Take a small rag and clean between the gears to remove any dirt. Pay close attention to the gears you use most frequently.
Two final often over looked tip on ebikes is to make sure that your chain rings and disc brake screws remain tight, E-bikes have a lot more vibration and pressure applied to them due to weight and speed. Over time they can loosen screws on these two very important parts of your bike. Make sure to check these every couple of months, just to insure a safe ride.
Follow these simple tips and your hub motor will last you a very long time. Have a great ride. - Jak na to + styl
Thanks for the great video. It's hard to find a video where the " instructor " isn't spending more time bashing a hub drive than actually showing anything of value.
Really, thank you, not all of us got $5000 to shell out on a bike we don't need because it's got a mid drive.
My big question is how do you lube the motor without taking the whole thing apart? I don't want to burn up my new rear hub wheel combination like my last one but I got 2200 miles off my last one.
TYhank you for a great video. I never knew about lubing the spoke wheel connection.
Thanks for the good tips.
My hub motor is stuttering after reinstalling from a tire change. Not sure if it’s hall sensor. Any idea?
Really love the build
Is there a way i can make the noise that Is coming from the freewheel more quiet because it’s getting on my nerves after riding for a bit
Yeah maybe that clicking noise was my spokes I thought it was in the rear hub motor. I just got it yesterday ecotric Hammer bike and you don't have to oil the motor ever or anyting?
oh, and is it enough to just hand tighten the cassette/cluster as it would tighten whilst riding?
should i take the motor housing lid off and clean the inside?
Super Vid. Wish I had seen this before my first spoke broke. Still, thanks a lot!
Can i add a front electric wheel to my rear assist e bike?
Great Tips, sinsce I've not had a bike for 45 years! lol
Greetz from Australia!
Mick
So why watch then?
Thank you.
Hi.. Can you keep original rim?
the spoke end lubricating is probably indeed a real thing, because my new rear hub ebike wheel began to make weird noise each turn, but only when i sit on the bike .. it sounds a little bit like small frog xD lol.. and it began doing that after only a week of riding .. i am
sure it is a spoke noise, because there is no chance, that bearings would make any noise after such short amount of time .. and I haven't done any spoke lubing at the beginning
It will be the spokes needing tightened / trued. I had this "small frog noise" too. It gets embarrassing. It took me ages to find out what it was. Hope you got it sorted.
I’m having a metal grinding sound when ever I throttle or use pedal assistant. What could be the problem?
Block Chain loose spokes on my rear tire.
By far the best video for ebikes
You shouldn’t put music in your video when you’re talking it’s very annoying
Hey: I watched your Video many times and it occurred to me in your video about spokes sometimes cause friction I have an Ancheer Ebike .I tried everything to get rid of the sound, as a last resort I tried oiling each spoke and after dealing with the noise it went away. You can find my Video under "Ancheer Clacking"
You said tighten clockwise. Isn’t that exactly opposite of correct way.
Ive done 2000 miles no issues then rim collapsed lol
You said tighten clockwise. That’s wrong. Should be counter clockwise.
I have a clicking/ticking noise coming from my rear hub motor. Its brand new, when I lean forward when riding it goes away, when I lean back and sit on the seat I hear the clicking/ticking....can you help?
Lube the spokes like it says/shows in the video.
Thanks Matt, we had the rear wheel trued by a local ebike shop....still has the clicking....not sure if they lubed it or not...but I will try that next.
@@bromotocycles122 I had the same problem, that is why I am here. I lubed mine today! Just got back from a ride and no clicking or ticking. I used a fairly thick lube and was generous with it. The excess will stabilise etc.
It seems obvious now.
@@matthewb9621 Thank you! I just picked up some White Lithium grease, and sprayed it on the rim spokes and hub motor spokes, went for a 2 mile ride.....NO NOISE! So happy! Thanks for the great advice and youtube video!!!
@@bromotocycles122 That is great (y) I have been out in the rain, too. Still no squeaks!
Fecking music AGAIN....why do people do this?
Because it's THEIR CHANNEL ...SO WHEN YOU MAKE ONE ..IF YOU MAKE ONE...DO AS YOU WISH....DAM PEOPLE ARE SLOWWWWW
@@rieriec.36 .... who are the ”dam people”? Are these people who work on dams? And what have they got to go with irritating music, drowning out the narrative?
Craig Webster Totally agree with you. The music just grinds my gears. On some videos there is no narrator, and I can then just mute the sound. But when you are trying to listen to someone talking, music is just not necessary.
Gears are nothing but misery.
Skip the music please
The video was about the motor but you did nothing to LMAO 😂
Yeah, lol, i came here thinking he was going to show us how to grease the motor.
Get rid of the music
Sorry about that
Worst music ever.
Anyone think this replaces a car you are dead wrong. My wheel bearing seized up. They are Toys fun but not dependable. Man up get a car
You are not dependable. Don't cheap out, maintain your ride, mine gets me 20 mi to work and 20 mi back everyday. I got a DUI, ànd was taking classes to get my license back when the pandemic grinded the whole process to a halt. Should I just tell my job I'm not a man therefore cannot climb trees for them for this reason? If being a man is what you are doing I'll gladly pass, you are a foolhardy man if you judge another with such little evidence.
