Are $15 knock off Shimano SLR-EV brakes any good?

  • In this video I reviewed some very inexpensive road bike brakes that I bought online. The make/model are ZTTO AS2.6D and I've seen them listed on eBay for as low as $14.67 USD per pair. In other words, they cost only $7.34 per brake! These brakes employ the dual symmetric pivot design, which is sold by Shimano as SLR-EV, which is their most effective design of rim brakes. No other bike companies sell brakes which are of this design, so when I saw these cheap knock offs I was really curious to give them a try. The least expensive equivalent brakes sold by Shimano sell for more than 6 times the price!
    Ztto AS2.6D: amzn.to/2PXWN45
    Unfortunately these brakes were incompatible with the bike that I bought them for, so I haven't had a chance to actually install or try these at the time of posting this video. Nevertheless, I decided to go ahead with posting this in the hopes that some of the information I shared would still be helpful, since I couldn't find any other videos about these brakes online.
    I hope you enjoyed this video. Please COMMENT and subscribe!
    Thanks for watching.

    I bought these brakes after trying a pair of 105 5800 ones that were on a friend's bike and noticing that the generic, non symmetric dual pivot ones on my BH Sphene were very weak compared to them. These Ztto ones brake just as firmly as the 105`s and costed 1/4 of the price. Absolutely recommend them.

    Putting good quality pads on will make a huge difference. I bought some Tektro long drop for my tourer, stopping whilst descending was not really a thing, even white knuckle gripping the levers. I changed the pads to good quality pads. I nearly went over the bars the first time I tried slowing down on a descent
    .

    • @cjhoyle
      @cjhoyle  Před 4 lety

      For sure. Were the ones you bought the Tektro R559's by chance? I'm assuming you installed them to replace some older single pivot side pull caliper brakes? Were they a big improvement from the old brakes? Since the ZZTO brakes I showed in this video didn't work out for my Linear, I've been considering buying this model from Tektro.

    • @nsjohnston
      @nsjohnston Před 4 lety

      @@cjhoyle Yes they were Tektr0 539, but it was a new build on a Kinesis T2 frame. It takes mudguards so requires the 57mm long drop calipers. I put BBB techstop pads on it and they made a huge difference. I've used those calipers for 5 or 6 years now and they work great. The pads they came with were terrible, which is common on cheaper brakes. One of the guys in my old club, elongated the holes on a set of 501 calipers to make them work where long drop brakes were required. It seemed to work without issue, however I'm not sure I'd recommend it.

    Since this guy didn't make a follow up, the brakes feel spongy, I put shimano pads on them and they don't bite as much compared to a campagnolo veloce I had. Barell adjuster is plastic, it will break eventually like plastic likes to do. Tested with 25mm tires, seems like it fits 32mm too.

  • @lukeholloway7836
    @lukeholloway7836 Před 4 lety

    Clean and lubricate the old brake calipers that will make them more powerful and put new pads and new cables that will make a big difference on braking power. Also they make long reach brake calipers for hybrid bikes that are dual pivot .

    • @cjhoyle
      @cjhoyle  Před 4 lety

      For sure there are things that can be done to improve the performance of old single pivot side pull brakes (all of which I've already done). Unfortunately none of those things will make them as effective as the newer innovations in brakes which have come since then. Yes you're right, there are long reach brakes available which are dual pivot (such as Tektro's R559) that would fit on this bike and be an improvement. However, unfortunately I don't believe there are any long reach brakes available which are Dual Symmetric Pivot (which as I noted in the video represent a 36% improvement over Dual Pivot).

    I restored a 1984 Miele Uno L.S. road bike, converted to a flat bar commuter. Upgraded to Sora brakes for like...39.99 each off Cycle Lambert at LBS. Using short pull shimano brake levers, they feel better than V-brakes.

      @cjhoyle  Před 4 lety

      Ya, brake technology has certainly improved since the 1980's. Dual pivot brakes make a big difference, and dual symmetric pivot even more so.

    @matthewbrealey2026 Před 3 lety

    hmm, looks like the answer to your question is 'no'
    cheaply cast, no bearings in them, cheap pads, they are not really like the Shimano SLR EV at all. But, they are cheap so I guess this is not surprising.

    • @cjhoyle
      @cjhoyle  Před 3 lety

      My conclusion was that I would not discourage others from buying them. They cost less than one sixth of the cheapest version of these brakes sold by Shimano. You get what you pay for.

    • @cjhoyle
      @cjhoyle  Před 3 lety

      Tektro unfortunately does not make Dual Symmetric Pivot brakes. I would certainly consider buying them if they did! As far as I could find when I researched this last year, no companies aside from Shimano make them (excluding the knock offs). The ones that you linked are Dual Pivot brakes, the predecessor of Dual Symmetric Pivot brakes. As mentioned in the video, according to Shimano, their Dual Symmetric Pivot design delivers 36% more braking power. Hopefully companies like Tektro will start manufacturing this design.

    • @matthewbrealey2026
      @matthewbrealey2026 Před 3 lety

      @@cjhoyle Nah, they say '. Together with the BC-9000 brake cable, the latest calipers deliver 36% more braking power than SHIMANO’s previous brake model. '
      So the cable is supposed to be like 20% (lower friction coating), and then 16% from the brake design.
      Problem is there's no real reason to believe a crappy dual symmetric pivot brake is going to be any more efficient than a good traditional dual pivot, because if you can get (claimed) 20% from the cable coating, then using crappy brake bearings or whatever could easily cost you 16% or more

    • @cjhoyle
      @cjhoyle  Před 3 lety +2

      @@matthewbrealey2026 I agree that it mentions that the brake cable plays a part in the 36% improvement, but where did you read that the impact of this is 20%? If such huge gains were possible from just the cable, why wouldn't they have already improved that on their previous model?
