I have that book. Great read. Don't know what else you're going to recommend, but "This Is Not Fame" by Doug Stanhope, and "Based on a True Story: A Memoir" by Norm Macdonald is also great.
Just found your channel via a Jerry Corley interview. I'm going to go deep into the rabbit hole of your videos. Thanks, from this comedy nerd. Some of my favorite books for comedy writing and comedians; Jerry Seinfeld's "Is this anything?" It's all his performance material grouped by decade. While it doesn't break down how he wrote each bit, if you have the basics of comedy writing from other sources, then you can see how Seinfeld uses those fundamentals in each bit. And of course, brevity is key. Bob Newhart's "I shouldn't even be doing this" is fantastic. There are two books by comedians that I consistently laughed out loud while reading - and this is one of them. While more of an autobiography, you can see how Newhart developed his comedy and takes his life stories and observations and turned them into great comedy. The other book that made me laugh out loud even more is Tim Conway's "What's so funny?". Conway was not known as a stand-up but he could deliver a punchline in character. His life story is fascinating and he tells it in a very, very funny manner. I'm big into turning life stories into comedy and sketches, and these two books (along with Steve Martin's) are great lessons in making your life stories great material. You add the joke writing techniques to your life stories to juice them even higher, and you get great comedy for stand-up. Birbiglia, Maniscalco, Mulaney are killing it today with this type of humor.
