Jadavpur University CCTV Debate: “Right to smoke & drink inside campus,” say students | NTT

  • Jadavpur University is caught in the CCTV debate post the unfortunate death of a first-year minor. There aren’t any CCTV inside the hostel where the minor had a fatal fall, was allegedly ragged to death. There aren’t any CCTV either inside the University campus, in clear violation of the UGC guidelines. Students claim that CCTV could lead to surveillance, infringing on their right to freedom and privacy. The death of the minor has also exposed the lapses and wrongs inside the Jadavpur University campus. NTT expose showed how alcohol bottles were found at several spots inside the campus, indicative of gross indiscipline. Dismissive of such an expose, the students remain defiant and oppose CCTVs be installed inside the campus. Students have justified drinking inside campus. They say “Since the university campus is like a second home, thus it’s okay to drink and smoke inside the campus”. They don’t call it brazenness but suggest it’s their right to freedom.

This is not the issue. *The reason you are opposing cc camera is, You want to keep this campus away from Indian legal system. And hence, you dont allow police inside campus too. You want to make this campus FREE ZONE, NO GO ZONE. So that you can carry out all the notorious activities, including providing shelter to Terrorists*

@@gmaxi360the issue is not about drinking. It is about installing cctv. From that topic turned to surveillance vs privacy and from them to the right of drinking and using legal substance.
Hostel rooms are the area where the right to privacy comes into the picture not the corridor and common place.
Even in our residential complex we have the privacy which limited to our room not the common area.
You just can't have sex and fun in the rooftop.
Digital surveillance could have installed a amount of cautious ness among the students, perhaps saved the lives of those innocents.

The majority of citizens in West Bengal won't agree with these young women.
Secondly, students of JU smoke weed and drink alcohol not only in their hostel rooms but also in other common places on the campus after sundown.
Thirdly, according to Article 14 of the Constitution of India, the state should strive to prohibit the consumption of alcohol. Clearly, the Constitution doesn't align with your perspective that alcohol is equivalent to non-vegetarian food. If you wish to amend the Constitution, you need to secure a majority in Parliament before any changes can be made. Until then, it remains your personal opinion.

When CCTV cameras are present in offices, housing societies, we don't consider it an invasion of privacy; instead, we view it as a safety measure. So, why do we oppose installing CCTV cameras on college campuses? Those who protest against campus CCTV often freely share personal details-travels, movies, dining, gifts from partners-on social media, compromising their privacy. It's puzzling how they raise privacy concerns solely within an educational setting, showcasing this duality of perspective
Make CCTV mandatory. Nobody is against the students. Yes, some 18-19 year olds are not villains , nobody is portraying them as , just that they are kids...they are meritorious kids ofcourse but they still don't understand the horror of not having CCTVs, it's not surveillance it's their own safety and security. @@gmaxi360 not really. Drunkenness in public places is illegal in many Western countries.
Drinking in public is generally not legal in India. Laws governing alcohol consumption and sale vary between states, but in many parts of the country, it is prohibited to consume alcohol in public places such as streets, parks, and beaches.
For example, the punishment for public drinking in Delhi as per the Delhi Excise Act, 2009 can include both fines and imprisonment.
Section 510, Indian Penal Code, 1860 punishes ‘misconduct in public by a drunken person’. This Section states that whoever, in a state of intoxication, appears in any public place, or in any place which it is a trespass in him to enter, and there conducts himself in such a manner as to cause annoyance to any person, shall be punished with simple imprisonment for a term which may extend to twenty-four hours, or with fine which may extend to ten rupees, or with both.
Apart from the above provision Section 279, IPC also gets attracted if the person while under the influence of alcohol drives on a public way in a rash and negligent manner. This Section states that whoever drives any vehicle, or rides, on any public way in a manner so rash or negligent as to endanger human life or to be likely to cause hurt or injury to any other person, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to six months, or with fine which may extend to one thousand rupees, or with both.

But drinking cannot be allowed at all. There can be a different area designated for drinking like a student bar or something like that, in major institutions all over the world, but that too away from the educational area and in a socialising building 😊.

Smoking and drinking should be banned inside hostels and campus. Seniors force the juniors to indulge in these activities as part of ragging. It's not just the issue of a few people drinking. Drinking leads to loss in decision making and elevates violence and brutality during fights and ragging. CCTV is absolutely necessary to catch those assaulting the juniors.

Lost all faith in education system at JU, this was the last nail in the coffin of all the great scholars, researchers and teachers of this institution. The students are regressive, they fail to even debate sensibly . The system is dead.

I believe we cannot drink and smoke in public places. Hostels and university campus are public places.

I don’t agree to smoke and drink on campus, because the university is to educate young people education is not only about book knowledge but about educating your mind and attitude too. Every school and university has the right to the rules. No one can sleep in the toilet, no one can serve dinner in the toilet. Every place has there own identity.

These JU students openly smoke weed, cigarettes and drink alcohol. I have a little bit of experience. I am a student of Calcutta university, I used to visit JU for my summer internship. One day I reached the campus early so I was just sitting inside the campus as i didnot want to enter the lab early, a student came we had a little bit of chit chat and suddenly he offered me weed to smoke which I refused. Every day while returning I used to see students smoking, drinking. That is why they are protesting against CCTV.

I grew up in Bengal with education in Institutions/ University of repute in Bengal. And served in a very senior position in the Central Ministry.. Now am a sexagenarian settled outside Bengal....
In the backdrop of age old rich Bengali culture wherein we grew up & we raised our kids with values, I am failing to grasp any iota on the present situation- do the parents of such 'smart' students endorse 'this view of drinking & smoking' of their beloved children in educational institutions (where Maa Saraswati is supposed to reside n we perform her Puja) in the present scenario in Bengal?
A petty question itching my soul is to ask - to what extent the parents of these students have become liberal/ progressive... Do they drink n smoke with their beloved kids(after attaining their drinking age) at home too?
Is this the phase of time to be seen for which Ishwar Chandra Vidyasaagar, Ram Mohan Roy, Sarat Chandra Chattopaadhyaay, Rabindranath Tagore advocated and fought for education??
Being a Bengali with humble background, am confused at this juncture of my age... 😭🙏
