Why is UGC upset with Jadavpur University? Correspondence between UGC & JU accessed | NTT Exclusive

- NTT Exclusive: UGC has expressed dismay over the death of the Jadavpur University student allegedly due to ragging, but more so as why and how the university authorities never cared to inform them till UGC took suo-moto cognizance and sought a report. The university authorities did respond but then UGC found it "very generic in nature". In the first letter Jadavpur University wrote to UGC, had highlighted the actions taken by the university post the death of the minor. But strategically they never mentioned the lapses, if any, on their part, leave aside the fact that University campus and hostel - both lacked CCTV surveillance, as mandated according to the UGC directives. UGC responded to the letter sharply and called out the actions taken by the JU authorities reactive in nature instead of being proactive in curbing the menace of ragging. University authorities in their response has maintained they have issued helpline numbers to the freshers during admission. But can the University absolve itself from its responsibilities of being more vigilant inside the hostel since there is absence of CCTV, something known to them, something they didn't or couldn't change? Interestingly JU didn't mention a word in it's correspondence to UGC about the outsiders and former students who had unfettered access to the hostel, some had been illegitimate boarders there and all of that were in knowledge of the University.

Mr Tamal and your team, I had been flowing your coverage of JU since the day you interacted with two young ladies who were busy with graffiti to voice their arrogance to installation of cc cameras. I am happy that you are able to articulate your views with out any bias. Please carry on. I just like to add that when such a serious lapse had been in existence for decades then how do they manage with NAAC and other similar rankings where JU stands at a top rung of the ladder. Is it manipulation? Or a casual approach by concerned regulators? I want you focus on these apspects too as recently such a case was highlighted regarding some universities. It is also necessary to appraise the placement authorities to take necessary cognisance of this menace as pupil with this kind of perverted ideals will be cancerous to their organisations as was the case with one of the reputed e-commerce startup.

Officials were taking money W/o performance. They turned a blind eye towards it. What we heard from the residents around the hostel is shocking. Seems university didn’t believe in well rounded education by inculcating values and good behavior.

Ragging is a disease that should be eradicated from the entire society immediately which is ruining our society. What is the use of keeping a person who has to die for it to achieve something. First of all students should be like good human beings that is very important thing for themselves to be changed. Radical changes r needed in our educational system. This incident is an eye opener, just a week before the incident JU alumnus came running questioning why the tag of imminence was not given. This is why.
