Everyone agrees that Kolkata is one of India's most beautiful cities. But not many know that a majority of the landmarks in the city were built not by the British, but by members of the Jewish community. Once a community several thousands strong, they are now down to just over 20 members.
Immediately after the second world war, countries like Austalia and Canada opened their doors to immigrants from around the world. With the formation of the state of Israel, thousands of Jews left the country to go back to their homeland. Many gave up great jobs in India, just to live in tents in Israel.
Despite their diminished numbers, the Jews of Kolkata still own three Synagogues, three schools and a cemetary in Narkedanga. Members of the community are now reaching out to Jewish communities in Singapore, Hong Kong and the United States, to see if they would help to manage Jewish affairs in the city. Members of the community are resigned to the fact that they may be the last generation of Jews in Kolkata. The way they see it, it's the city's loss.
101 Traces looks at the last of anything: ethnic communities, folk craftsmen, disappearing trades, forgotten people. It sketches portraits of these unique individuals, locked in a battle they cannot win: a battle against the future. Together, they represent the dying whispers of ancient heritage and traditional individuality. As India moves towards homogenized global pop culture, 101 Traces honors the people, the objects, and the skills that connect us to our ancient identity.

But Muslims today and the indigenous people of this country, the untouchables, will not have the same thing to say.
It's because Jews in India never became rich enough to control or run a significant part of India's money flow - Hinduism historically and even today doesn't have an issue with wealth or being involved with money lending businesses. They never got too involved in local Indian politics either - individual Jews became important leaders and judges but they were never a significant vote bank that local politicians needed to pander to and the Jews never asked for special privileges either that would make them the target of scorn and derision.
Plus, Jews were primarily traders and so were foreigners living in a land where culturally or religiously they had no connection with the local population.
Quite frankly, one cannot compare the small Jewish communities of India with the massive Jewish communities that lived in the Middle East and Europe, where their communities had a much bigger impact on the local population.

I am a Christian and I have visited Israel and the tour guide leader was an Indian Jew whose family had moved to Isreal years ago having been discovered by Jews visiting India. They were said to be one of the tribes of Isreal in India so we were informed. The ancient scripts requires secure storage and protection in India as that is precious history that cannot be lost. That is sad but that is happening everywhere. In my home town there over ten thousand Jews at one time and now there are only about three families left. The Jew that are left are mostly over 50 years old, my parents are part of that community. The rest of us moved to Israel.

The Armenians, BENGALIS (THE DOMINANTS) , Parsis, Jews, Anglo Indians, Chinese. Nahum's, China town, Coffee House and thousands more to add on. The perfect blend of Europe and the United Kingdom ..I have had never felt home alone. The best place in India to be. No wherein India I could find all of these!
