  • @takammyy

    Kaneki's father died when he was four years old. He doesn't remember his face very well but his father used to write books. Kaneki liked the scent of his books and found some sort of comfort whilst reading. He felt close to his father. This is one of the things that also gave him his book reading traits.

  • @Maddiedesu
    @Maddiedesu Před 5 lety +1486

    I think you're missing a vital point here. Kaneki's mother was extremely poor, taking on hard jobs just to keep Kaneki and herself fed and under a roof. If Kaneki asked for something or did something that made him stand out or, more importantly, cost money, she would beat the mentality in him that they couldn't afford it, he shouldn't ask for anything because she's already trying her best, she's already making as much as she can, he should just be a good boy. The problem with telling your kids at a young age about financial problems is that they want to help, but they don't know how. So Kaneki tried his best to stay out of her way, to be the perfect child. Plus, while she was working, she had to leave him to take care of himself while she was gone, so he spent a lot of time alone and learning to fend for himself at such a young age. Maybe he thought this was his fault somehow.
    I am in no way condoning her actions, because that's pretty bad parenting, but I'm just saying the stress probably turned her towards that mentality, and he saw that, as kids do.

      I feel that deserves congratulating. As I have often wondered as to what her reasons for beating him was.
      Some even think she died because Kaneki killed her. But it makes sense if you look at the assumption that she just took her stress out on him to the point where Kaneki created a different persona to her, so he could cope from the loneliness.
      Thank you for bridging the gap.

That’s the way my mother was always working won’t take a break helping everyone but herself she got mad and from all of her work she forgot about her health and forgot to take care of herself she started to burn out and soon later she passed. I like to believe Kaneki first way of thinking was the most beautiful one.
    I would like to see a world where people like him, even after torture, would still see the beauty on each individualities.
    I needed to grew up to understand that, but Kaneki kept getting wronger.
    I found that sad that Kaneki needed to be tortured to understand something that doesn't make him someone better.
    It's basically like changing from "I want to help people, even if i have to suffer to make them understand" to "I don't care of anyone else than me now, i suffered because i was weak, si i need to be strong"
    It's understandable seing how his life was.
    Kaneki was somehow for me a spiritual guide to find which personnality would be the one to make me find my way.
    And now i also understand why i was so disappointed at the end of TG.
    It was simply due to the fact that Kaneki would never make me understand more thing about myself, to be better with other people and even myself, because humankind is a self-seeking race.
    Anyway, even if my favorite personnality is his Black Reaper form because i was kind of like him at the moment scans came out, i think the one who is the closest to truth would be the first Kaneki.
    Because if everyone try their best to empatize with each other, how could hate born ?
    Btw, i doesn't really like how Kaneki is at the end because it make me believe that he only care about himself now, well about his family and friends in fact, without trying to make things better with people that are actually wrong about what they think.

    • @winterbeast6326
      @winterbeast6326 Před 5 lety +12

      @@amazingjay3957 It's the whole ironic thing of TG.
      It's a story about a man who change his mind, but fail when he was actually right at the beginning.
      So maybe, as you said, Tokyo Ghoul is a manga about a character that wasn't able to recover from his torture.
      Well he kind of recovered, but he will never be the same good guy he was.
      (In fact, it's also a question of point of view, i think the best for human would be to love each other even if we have different opinion (as long as there is no people involved in it tho), but someone could say the whole point of the life is protecting his family (which is kind of ironic since we are all a family in fact))

    • @joshtolman6098
      @joshtolman6098 Před 5 lety +13

      I agree with all that has been said, but I do think he had his redemption at the end. When he is up against Furuta remember he has to explain why he keeps going. Furuta is under the impression that there really is no point to this world. We appear, then we suffer for a little bit, then we die. Kaneki then explained that he isn't entirely sure why we keep going, but he recognizes that he is happy with those he loves and that everything he went through made him who he is now. He was grateful for the experience.
      I think what's important in this is that it is the people we love that make this world beautiful. Kaneki does end up focusing primarily on his family, but look who his family is. He is surrounded by more than just touka and ichika, but also everyone that has influenced him. Family extends perpetually.
      I guess what I'm trying to say is his view actually did come back around, it's just that now it is more focused. It is a lot easier, and more powerful, to care for someone and do everything for them when you actually have a relationship there. The juxtaposition between him and Furuta is their motivations. Furuta was completely selfish while kaneki always did everything for the future of others, even if he did have to sacrifice to get there.

    • @icankickflipok
      @icankickflipok Před 4 lety +7

      It’s interesting. Old Kaneki thought the right path was pure selflessness, but that’s impossible, for one, and two, in order to be more selfless you have to balance it with a degree of selfishness. If you have nothing for yourself and no reason to fight for yourself, then you have nothing to give to others and no reason to live for the sake of others. Like kaneki’s mom, who couldn’t even live for the sake of her own son by turning her sister away so she could afford time to be with him, instead of leaving him alone all the time. She wasn’t selfish enough, and in the end, she caused more harm than good because she couldn’t bring herself to turn away from who was hurting her and towards who needed her. Rize hits the nail on the head. His mother was weak, too weak to cut the bad fruit off the tree, make the sacrifice that was necessary for her son to have his mother.

      @domagojzrilic6190 Před 3 lety +2

      @@amazingjay3957 The reason he didn't come back to his original mindset was because it was wrong. He couldn't protect those he cared about if he didn't change. What the fuck is this bullshit that he started caring only about himself and his friends, he learned to take a stand for himself and his friends there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. He didn't stop caring about others or understanding them he just figured out his priorities that's the whole point of the thing with his aunt and his mother. Had she driven her sister away she would still be alive and Kaneki would have a mom. What the fuck is this bullshit. White hair Kaneki is the best Kaneki albeit a little unhinged, Black Reaper is the opposite of his original mindset but it's still better than the way he was living before he became a ghoul which is the same way his mother lived. The lesson he needed to learn in the end is to not blame himself for the failings of others nor to take everyone elses responsibilities onto himself neither of his personalities were completely in the wrong or completely in the right and in the end he found the balance to live by.

    • @winterbeast6326
      @winterbeast6326 Před 3 lety

      @@domagojzrilic6190 He didn't say it's a bad thing that Kaneki is like that. It's just that it doesn't feel like an answer. Who doesn't care about the person who loves them ? Kaneki was already like that at the beginning, he just had difficulties to see that there are people who loves him for who he is. But first Kaneki also realised that, his mother was beating him, but he understood that this was necessary for her to feel better. Then, you can watch the first fight between Kaneki and Amon, his mentaly was to take those bad emotions in him, to help people become better themselves. Look how Amon view changed after this altercation.
      Basically, first Kaneki was a person who tried his best to help others even though the only thing he lacked was enough power, while the last one is just "Yeah it's normal that people suffer, everyone does. Imma just focus on my family even though I already did before and not help people to understand each other even though I now have the power to do so"
      In the end, Kaneki didn't became strong for others, but for himself. That's realistic but just not the best way to see things imho.
      Then, as I said, there is many ways to see things, so it's not "wrong" in any means. It's just the "accept things how they are" isn't a way I like.
      I actually prefer a character like Subaru now. Someone who takes shit on himself for others, but don't want to feel bad either. He'll do everything he can to change things, even though it's so hard since he is weak.
      Season 2 made him a whole lot depper, so I need to watch the whole show again to better understand it, but he feels like a complete Kaneki to me. (Btw, I'm not gonna lie first Kaneki wasn't my favorite either. He couldn't take the good decisions and was too weak, but he always fought for what he believed in. That's what I loved with him)

That makes me think that Kaneki was very much suicidal and he knew that he would go through with it if he wasn't a ghoul.
    Btw, did you see that sketch Ishida did of Goku?

      I agree. His breakdowns, too, were oddly beautiful with all of the imagery involved. The first half of ;re was pretty good with Sasaki, too, but, man, if only Ishida didn't get burned out. Ever since Kaneki regained his self, it wasn't the same.

    I think it's more about how Kaneki took the meaning behind what happened with him rather than just her mother being abusive. Like it's more about how Kaneki started fearing her which turned him into a boy who used to follow her ideals out of fear and not out of love or respect, because he never got any explanation about why she got mad at him. So to him it was always a traumatizing memory which eventually carved his behaviour

    • @darthmisogyny3828
      @darthmisogyny3828 Před 5 lety +1

      She use to beat him alot. The reason for is probably because of how stressed his mother was about her always working to not only support her self but her sisters family as well.
      Like he said in the manga
      I was beaten by the ppl I loved the most.
      U see an image of his mother hitting him with kaneki on the ground curled up crying while holding his chin saying he's sorry and that he'll never ask a for anything. It was also hinted at twice in the original TG manga. Once during his torture with Jason and the other towards the end. But both times his memory blocked it out

  • @Girintina
    @Girintina Před 5 lety +5

    Kaneki had it rough. I think it's interesting that until he was tortured he had the mentality "it's better to be hurt than to hurt others" and got that from his mother, the same woman who was abusing him. I think you're right in saying he'd have committed suicide, especially because he just accepted all this pain and misery which was putting more and more pressure on him.

    This is so sad cause honestly I lived a childhood very similar to kaneki. The only difference was I was never physically abused.....just emotionally. Growing up as a kid that's all I knew. My dad was never really in the picture, I have older siblings but my mom ran them off, so they were gone for a while. My big brother and big sister were one off my only sources of happiness back then, because as a kid I couldn't quite understand everything...all I knew is that we were all suffering together and in a way it brought us closer with memories we could never forget. My mom with the divorce with my dad devastated her mentally, she went into years into depression. Almost to the point of suicide sometimes. And oddly enough I was like kaneki, i never hated my mother for the things she did. Despite the choices she made, I loved her unconditionally. She was lost in a dark place..she did her very best considering the circumstances she delt with so I don't blame her even when she should be blamed. It's so odd. The person I cherish the most and the person i am closest to in this life is also the one that has hurt me the most emotionally. And I don't regret the childhood I was handed to. I feel if I write a similar toned story like this and really relay my feelings of my life and childhood i could inspire many people and maybe prevent wars.

    I remember reading some chapters a few years ago (I read until the Ghoul Squad Timeskip, I stopped there) and I remember clearly Kaneki blaming himself for the passing away of his mother because she basically worked herself to death. This is the definition of depression, when you look so much into things that you just have a warped view of the reality itself. It's narcisistic, but in a suicidal way, as in everything in the world is your fault and if you were gone things would be so much better.
    I also remember something about a sister. I don't mind spoilers, cause I watched the whole anime and I'm looking for the perfect opportunity to hit the manga

      Agree.. while my big isn’t as tragic as kanekis.. I suffered from mental and psychical abuse.. even to this day.. but 100% I never got suicidal.. I got lack of confidence, lonely (abut not in that lonely sense.. empty…maybe, and restricted. We all need a hide.. I wish I had hide.
      Also, a feeling of being wanted,, if his mom died, suddenly his purpose is gone.. she used him to vent,, in a way that’s purpose.. it’s like another infp character who lets people beat him up.. his purpose in life.. not suicidal..
      I think, kaneki after meeting hide, found some purpose.. and wasn’t suicidal.. hide said kaneki excelled at a lot of things, including -- acting. It shows, even kaneki was in pain, he was good at masking it… for hides sake.

My mom knows that I have ADHD so it was hard for me at school so she wouldn't hit me allot when I was little. I didn't have a dad till last year. My mom told my dad about my disability and found out I have mild autism when I was sucial. So I'm enjoying my life with my little twins brother.

    • @firebreathingmoonbeam3961
      @firebreathingmoonbeam3961 Před 5 lety

      ADHD is not autism. I actually have it. It's not a disability in the same way autism can be.
      ADHD is a term for people who are forced to be one way when we are another. A classic example is sitting at a desk all day and having to stay focused the entire time.
      It doesn't stop us from following our desires/goals in life. Sure things like homework might take longer to complete but that doesn't mean you can't complete it.
      The way I see it it's not a disability because there is actually something not working properly. It's a disability because society is not structured to allow people that function outside of 'sitting/focussing all day'.
