    • @Sufferents
      @Sufferents  Před 5 lety +105

      The thing with that is Kaneki acquired that trait from Jason from seeing it in a time of desperation and sorrow, it stayed with him because he cannibalized.

      @Sufferents  Před 5 lety +85

      Andre Lyew normally I would agree, but Jason used it for many reasons, power, self control, to unhinge himself to name a few, Kaneki also used it as a way to cope at the start. However throughout the rest of the story the finger crack slowly loses all of its meaning and how it helped Kaneki, he starts to make it his own. He does this with a lot of things but those others never change meaning. Which led me to believe that the only reason Kaneki still finger cracks till the end is because it’s a trait he can’t get rid off because he ate Jason. It’s both a mental thing but also a ghoul thing.

    I always had my own theory on the finger cracking. I think Yamori started cracking his fingers because the centipede that was planted into his ear creates similar sounds. He describes that the sound of a centipede in your ear never leaves your mind, so the cracking of fingers could be a replication of the centipede’s erratic movements in his ears. This would explain why Ken starts cracking his fingers since he also suffered the centipede torture. It would make sense since the idea of centipedes continues to have a large affect on his mentality, even manifesting itself as his half-kakuja form and later when he desperately cannibalises the Oggai in which he has a monologue where he describes himself as ‘a centipede’. Seeing as how the centipede has so much of an effect on his mind, it would make sense why the finger cracking sticks with him as a product of this affected mentality.
    Just my idea though, I’ve always thought that the finger cracking would come from something more than just seeing Yamori do it.

    • @psycholonya
      @psycholonya Před 5 lety +3

      That’s my point, seeing it happen and also having that symbolic centipede in your ear would turn finger-cracking into a habbit. I can’t imagine Ya ori and Ken would just start finger-cracking because someone who is causing them unimaginable pain did it.

      Oof I'm doing a micro biology major and that sounds complicated. I would say that rc cells may resemble stem cells in how they differentiate like that. Perhaps cells that can revert back to a simple rc cell like induced stem cells with sox2 and all that. The kakuhou are located on the back perhaps to stop the cells from effecting major organs when the proliferate and contract. The location is probably due to genetic characteristics. I could maybe go on but this will be too long , good luck

    • @disguy3232

      @@spawnofcrotalvl4038 I was thinking more, cause it was kinda fun. So why they have durable skin is that the rc cells are spread through their body I think it moves in the blood stream. Blood does flow through the skin which may be why their skins is durable, perhaps it migrates through the vessel to the developing skin. Their eyes being black maybe predatorial to absorb more light at night time cause people are usually inactive at night and they are less likely to be seen. There are red pigments in the eye that go in conjunction with others but it might play a roll in scaring people at night time. Finally the rc cells themselves may have been an organism itself originally like how chloroplasts and mitochondria were theorized to originate. Somehow it integrate itself with humans , cause humans and ghouls have rc cells. The humans that aren't ghouls are an earlier integration of the rc cells, the ghouls are people that have a more developed rc cell production.why ghouls have altered taste buds to humans is to replenish rc cells cause it might be too taxing for the cells to regenerate, proliferate etc at high rates to sustain their kakuhous and kagune.

    • @spawnofcrotalvl4038
      @spawnofcrotalvl4038 Před 5 lety +4

      @Dis guy I also theorized that, since kakugan are a byproduct of Rc cells activating, ghouls developed the ability for their eyes to turn black for exactly that: a hunting mechanism. I’m also thinking the red is some sort of intimidation tactic >:D Also, my friend and I figure that Rc cells are a non-Newtonian fluid due to the fact they can be called “liquid muscle” and because kagune (which are made of Rc cells) can sharpen and harden at will. I’m just struggling with the “woven like steel fibers” bit. Maybe Rc cells have a largeer amount of metal in their makeup than normal cells because of this? As well as the fact that eating solely humans means a larger iron intake (I know iron isn’t steel, but hey this is fictional)

  • @_cyanite
    @_cyanite Před 4 lety +43

    Here's my theory:
    At the beginning, there were only ghouls that exists. They were a species with some slightly unbalanced genes due to them being a newly evolved species, mostly they would live like humans used to live, eating other animals(straight up eating it, killing it *in the process*) or cannibalising on other ghouls(which creates kakujas). Until they slowly had the idea of morality, "good and bad" and the idea of food preservation, some of them had tried to kill the animals beforehand like we do nowadays, removing the torturing part of being eaten alive from the process and they are able to preserve the food by cooking or other processes. The majority of the species saw this as a good idea since sometimes it's hard to hunt for food. Due to their ever so slightly unbalanced genes from the start, they slowly adapted to eating processed* meat(cooked or preserved) and their bodies slowly evolved to eating processed meat, some even evolved to omnivores since agriculture is easier compared to hunting down wild animals. This then created humans. They stopped hunting and started to rear animals, meaning they no longer require the extra physique, healing factor and kagunes, causing these traits to slowly be gone from their genetic tree. The minority of the species saw this as a setback, they continued have the same lifestyle as before. The humans saw the behaviour and lifestyle of the ghouls to be barbaric and uncivilised, the ghouls had become outcasts. With this causing fear and anger within the ghouls, they had humans set as their enemies. They had begun eating humans as a result. This passive war against each other slowly imprinted within them and their genes, making them natural enemies. Compared to other animals, humans are the most nutritious since they are usually well fed and are well built. The ghouls slowly switched their main source of food to be humans. Having these events and factors going for a long time, the two slowly became two distinct species rather than one. The genes of the two species then slowly stabilized as time had passed, creating the two very different yet similar species, ghouls and humans. This would explain why there are ghouls from all over the world since mutations are usually random and the chances of several identical mutations occuring around the globe is pretty low, this would explain why they are everywhere and scattered. It would also explain kagunes, since cannibalising wouldn't just have created kagunes, so if they were to have it from the start as a species, it would make more sense. Same goes to RC cells. The humans had no use of it, so their RC cells became dormant and unused. Explains why humans even had RC cells in the first place.

  • @asmazam
    @asmazam Před 5 lety +141

    I feel that ghouls would come near the modern area (maybe near the end of the industrial rev?), because if they came in a tribal time wouldn't they have just destroyed all of humanity cos humans back then probably didn't have the intelligence and wits to create something to fight back, not even the simplest possible quinque. My theory is that since all humans are born with rc cells maybe they are grown during the pregnancy of the parent and maybe they give some sustenance to the human (but without them it'd be next to no different), so maybe some human was born with a defect where their rc cells didn't stop growing at birth and they continued to grow. Then it was a human ghoul, like a human with a really weak kagune, so as the ghoul ate it would grow stronger and maybe there were other defect humans (i'll call the rc growing humans defect humans) that existed, and they breeded to create ghouls. Then ghouls slowly grew and grew stronger as the generations went by until the state the ghouls species is in. I got the idea of 'RC cells growing in the pregnancy but ending at the birth' idea because I mean, during pregnancy everything is made so if RC cells exist in humans they would be made at the birth (maybe), so there is a possibility that ONE human was born weird. Although the rc cells could have begun growing at adult hood ( explaining why they didn't kill the child when it was young when they found out 'oh shat this aint gud'.) If it were adult hood it would be much stronger. So the story would be,
    Baby born -> Baby rapidly grows in rc cells -> baby is now ghoul
    Or :
    Baby born -> happy life until adult hood -> Adult baby want human flesh -> Adult baby nom nom on humans -> Adult baby meet others like it (highly likely that there are) -> Adult baby breeds and creates more ghouls.

      @denispopescu8775 Před 5 lety +9

      I like your comment, it brings some good ideas. I think ghouls could've existed in "the era of tribes", if a ghoul were to be born in a really small tribe then sure the ghoul would eat the tribe then die due to starvation. Chances are that the first ghoul was born in a bigger tribe(more offsprings leads to more chances for the mutation to occur and even in a bigger tribe incest would still be a thing). A single ghoul could survive feeding on a bigger tribe without killing it, a couple of ghouls let's say couldn't so one of the ghouls would die due to scarcer resources(the tribe wouldn't necessarily be wiped out, maybe they would go into hiding until the threat passes). It's just like with rabbits and wolves, basic predator-prey relationship - more rabbits leads to more wolves, less rabbits leads to less wolves.

    • @ibn_adham
      @ibn_adham Před 5 lety +16

      Ghouls didn't just manifest through a few years of cannibalism. Centuries of incest and cannibalism since tribal eras are what would lead to a slow progression of the manifestation of ghoulkind. They would not have been able to overtake human societies because they were not even near as powerful as the ghouls in the modern world of Tokyo Ghoul because of how early this history of breeding is in the timeline.

    I've always thought this to have been the case, that RC cells were born and evolved through early human, tribal, cannibalism. I can agree with your hypothesis, and think you hit the money here, especially how you brought your own personal background of tribal ancestry into it. Tribes and evolved from that, clans, is something I've noticed that is influenced in a lot of anime, because that idea at it's very core is heavily associated with Japan's culture. Clans, one's clan, the preservation of a clan, and the eradication of other clans was a big mentality in even Japan's government up to the end of the Second World War. The Sengoku Period was much, much more than just a period in Japan's history, it was a lifestyle and an entire foundation of a country. The Warring States period may of started in the early 1400's and ended in the 1600's, however the idea of a clan, or a tribe, warring against others is in the very roots of humanity.

    An interesting view! The ghoul world seems closer to ours thanks to your ideas. And it would be great if Ishida-sensei confirms these theories in a prequel. Who khow? He only said that "a sequel is unlikely". A prequel exploring the origin of ghouls, dragon, the Washuu, Kaneki's father (who I theorized to be somewhat related to ghouls :) will be very fulfilling!

    i feel like the existence of the nagaraji is overlooked a bit when exploring the history of ghouls. it has alot to do with events that shaped the world as presented during the time the story takes place. i mean, the ghoul that would eventually became the nagaraji (the underground king) was the reason the washuu family founded the CCG's parent organization in 1890. the petrified remains of the nagaraji are very similar to the dragon that kaneki would become. they were both one-eyed ghouls, and both lead a ghoul revolution against humanity. i suppose the same could be said of eto but she never became a monstrosity on the scale of the dragon despite her mass cannibalism. i think the key difference is that eto never fed on half-ghouls. i believe that a kakuja on that scale is only created when a half-ghoul specifically cannibalizes on other half-ghouls. this is what i think kaneki and the underground king had in common that eto did not. perhaps after escaping to the 24th ward the underground king bred them to eat them and gain the power he needed to finally overthrow the CCG, without knowing the uncontrollable monster he would create. The dragon orphans feel like the next evolution of ghouls, pure kagune monsters. And if kaneki's dragon created the next evolution of ghouls, it makes me wonder if maybe the nagaraji was the thing to create the ghouls as we see them in the present day. that maybe before the nagaraji, ghouls were completely contained within, and were a product of the washuu family. ive always wondered how human society came to be dominant over the world despite humans being the "natural prey" of the ghouls. this would make sense if ghouls didnt exist until the 19th century. it would also explain why tokyo is the center of the ghoul conflict in this world, with the majority of rest of the world seemingly absent. tokyo would've been the ghouls' native land, with only a few finding their way over seas.
    its important to note that this theory is not without it's holes, but its fun to explore and i feel as though more significance should be placed on the nagaraji's existence and what it could symbolize.

    Well about the finger cracking, I think he just picked that up after Jason did it so much around him. Much like how Jason told the story of how he convinced himself that he wasn't the one being tortured by the ccg warden, and then eventually became a sadistic torturer like that same warden after he was freed, Kaneki assumed the mannerism because he was around it for so long. It's not like he only did it after he ate Jason's kagune, he did it right after the bite he used to restore his kagune, but before that he was literally in chains and couldn't move. he did it immediately after his hands were free. I think of it as him forming his new ghoul personality around the one who pressured him to the point he even needed one, just like Jason did.

    If you wanted to make this real simple Ghouls could've possibly came from the radiation of the bombs that fell on Japan in WW2 like maybe that's what triggered the RC cells to suddenly expand rapidly within a small population that was controlled till the binge eaters and Tokyo Ghoul came around

    I completely agree with your idea on how the first ghouls might have come to exist, especially taking clues on how the Washuu's do things with their own family and where they originally came from gives a bit of clues. I wonder if Ishida would ever decide to do another manga about ghouls and the lands that might have birthed them originally or seen great influxes of them appearing...

    I think a mutation on rc cells that made the mutant become a ghoul could be a very likely explanation for the first ghoul,and after that he was just very lucky with his descendants being also ghouls,knowing that it's hard for a ghoul and a human to have a baby,without the baby and the mother dying

    I have to say, I really do agree with you. Personally, I thought ghouls were created because of humans cannibalizing and absorbing the other human's RC cells but you went even more in depth, to the point of the creation the cell itself. Good video, really enjoyed.

    More insight lies in the Tokyo Ghoul plot itself, Ayato found a mummy version of dragon underground in an old city. It is thought that there were ghouls in the ancient times but they were very small in numbers (the Washi clan stretches back this far) then one of them a half ghoul who became known as the first one eyed king underwent the dragon transformation like Kaneki and possibly turned more humans into ghouls. This is when society discovered ghouls

    Yeah it makes more sense where the first ghoul just starts off with just the need for human flesh, where then as cannibalism dies down throughout history and they would be hunted they would gain their healing, but I’m not really sure how the kagune would come into play. Maybe it was just created so they were able to store the extra RC cells and stuff I dunno, but other than that I agree my dude. Really interesting topic
