Yugumo is essentially Kagero, Part II. The ships are similar enough in characteristics that finding differences between them very nearly takes a magnifying glass. There are some key ones, though, most notably in terms of torpedo damage and loadout options. In this video I'll talk about how I build my Yugumo, why I fit her out that way, how I recommend playing her, and follow all of that up with a game demonstrating the ship in action.
Enjoy!

Thanks, or the vid. My favourite DD! I run RPF, smoke and the F3's for knife-fighting other DDs. And at point blank range 80 knts, they are hard to dodge, and they hit hard.
I'm hoping that with the upcoming CV plane spotting nerf that the reload booster will be an even more viable option. Another tip for anyone would be to maximize your detection when sending torp salvos out. You just need to be careful not to fall within radar or hydro range of your targets. I think in the sample gameplay you could have gotten way closer to those BBs. I think all you had to worry about was FDGs hydro at 6 km.
I could have gotten way closer, but the FdG's 6km hydro means that I don't want to ride TOO close to the line or I risk getting spotted. 6.5-7km is a comfortable enough buffer to give me some room to maneuver.
I would very much like TRB to be more viable on these high tier ships given how much you have to invest into the torpedoes to get really good value out of them (several modules and commander skills). We'll see how things go with the spotting changes, they may yet make the entire line better to play.
Yuugumo is so darn similar to Kagero that you will find right at home playing her, the main different is her gun is louder than Kagero, her Heath is higher but still not that much exciting, her Detectability is worst, she got a big buff in Torpedo power that her torp can kill a ship with just 2 or 3 torp hit. Overall what you have been learning in Kagero where you run around like a roaches and stealth torp people apply to Yugumo too, but due to the meta of tier 9 the play style become much more unforgiving where a wrong gun trigger can mean an entire map want you dead, but in turn, your torpedo is so good the reward of playing correctly worth all the punishment you might have.
Agree with Raptor. If you are learning this ship, please take smoke and the 93 mod 3 torps. You will want the torp range to try and dig out those 12 km radar cruisers and you will need the smoke to disappear when you blunder into a place that you shouldn't be. Once you're comfortable in the classic configuration and you have a high enough captain to make some choices, you have options. Of the three high tier IJN torp boats (Kagero, Yugumo, and Shimakaze), the Yugumo gives you the most build options. Once you feel comfortable in her and you have a high point captain, you can take her to the very edge with a TRB, RPF, F3 build. It makes her an amazing predatory dd as long as she can stay safe from radar and planes in the first half of the game. She is one of my go-to boats when I'm grinding combat missions.
My first tier IX ship in the game years ago and sure I was encouraged by Kagero knowing Yugumo has access to slot VI torpedo reload. However Yugumo at a tier step higher over Kagero is a bit disappointing because it feels somehow it is not an entire step higher but this can be my personal opinion. The tech tree of torpedo oriented dds for my private usage (it is also in reality partly a way of development of those dds) goes something like: Shiratsuyu, Kagero, Yugumo and Hayate (receiving a buff) because those ships have access to a reload booster consum. A second branch is Fubuki (Shinonome), Akatsuki. Shimakaze and Yamagiri because those simply have 3 sets of torpedos and a smoke. Now, ships at tier IX suffer what tier VIII was suffering for years in random while being a bottom tier, fortunately tier VIII (curently) and tier IX before often participate in ranked and this is a fair matchmaking. I play Yugumo with a torpedo reload booster in ranked there are no cv and gameplay is interesting.
Well done, I almost have 600 games in this ship. I only run the f3's now, and I'm never looking back. Same ship build except the f3's and gun range mod. (w/ f3's your danger close most the time, less bloom ain't gonna save u) Capt builds are different (T1 - same, T2 - last stand, T3 - Fill Tubes, Adrenaline, Super(last skill I take), T4 - RPF, concealment)
The F3s on this boat are for the truly bold. I am not that guy, but I am glad people out there play them.
@@SeaRaptor it can be challenging. but it'll teach u skills that will help your overall DD play. Of coarse, you have to believe there is more to this game then "guns go boom".
super excited for American CLs. Gotta be my favorite line so far
great vid, have a bunch of games in Yug but made me realize i should change my gameplay a bit to take advantage of its strengths and weaknesses
Very favourable circumstances, no CV, no DD gun boats pushing you. Nice video, good advice.
Very favorable, and you can see what the ship can achieve when left to her own devices. The Japanese torpedo boats are very dangerous ships, they just have to focus on different things and play a little differently than some of the other nations.
Yeah, in most of T10 matches you can't really use your stealth advantage because of CVs, radars and even subs. And if all you can do is to spot for your team and try to torp enemy campers from 10+ km - the game gets boring.
Another problem with the current meta is that T10 engagements are usually very long range. BBs shooting each other from 20+ kms so you will naturally become distanced from the rest of your team if you need to spot or torp. Which means you are alone. Any gunboat or radar ambush makes you killed.😢
True. The modern meta of the game has not been kind to some of the older lines of ships that were designed in a different era of the game.
Minegumo is stealthier with 5.4km and i think also Jaegger!
I dont think Yugumo is can play in current meta.
with 12km torp. we already a lot hybrid and and radar 10km and 12km. when they spot you. you so dead.
and CV plane still can spotting for entire team.
sorry. yugumo and karego only thing of the past. before radar and hybrid. this ship just pure suicide only
To each their own. It's more than possible to have great games in these ships in randoms.
