The tofu mafia in Jianshui, Yunnan is a scary bunch. They are protecting a heavily guarded secret, and we found out about it when we were there.

Nice research, I'm from Argentina and I am currently watching Brooklyn 99! Awesome
If Nord is so great, why does mine refuse to work 2-3 times a week, ever damn week?
Including right now, just a couple of days after loading the latest version. :(
I had absolutely no respect for you whatsoever when you used to do the feel-good stories about China. It wasn't until you started speaking the truth that you deserved a little bit of respect
Another great video guys. Wang Weiluo, famous Chinese hydrologist, says that because of the amount of dams and reservoirs in China now, the self cleaning ability of the rivers are reduced over 80%, making CHINA'S DRINKING WATER now EQUIVALENT TO WATER COMING OUT of GERMAN SEWAGE treatment plants. Cancer rates, diseases, etc are skyrocketing with healthcare (massively underfunded) unable to help the poor souls affected.
The Chinese man who spoke up about the Condition of the well is a lion! Those who speak up when others are silent deserve massive respect.
he ded now
Not in China. They don't value truth. They value face.
Because to save face or not, at least he dare to speak about it.
I fear for what happened to him later. :(

For a long time as a Chinese immigrant, I didn't understand why my parents always boiled or bought water jugs in Canada. Now I understand. Thank you so much for telling these stories to the world.
Yeah, but boiling water only gets rid of bacteria. If toxic waste sludge is in there, boiling the water makes it stronger. U boil the water away and distil and concentrate the most toxic stuff

You two might be the last two people to ever do trips like this in China, and record it in great detail, until the CCP is no longer in power and the internet and travel is free again.
Maybe they'll be remembered by history?
When Obama gave the control of the internet to the UN it cease to be free.

@@armynation31B5V5P a true hero to China as oposed to we know who!
It was not tofu man it was random well guy
In Japan there are many frozen foods made in China and sold in Japan. There were certain incidents where Japanese people got sick and it was found it was due to high levels of pesticides in the food. The China side (the CCP) always found it was due to a single person poisoning the food. Never was it found to be poisoning from the land where the ingredients are grown/farmed.
It may be later in time from when you found out but you did your best for your safety and the safety of those with you. Your speaking up now and that is appreciated.
When the CCP falls they will be heros!
People will watch this and think how grateful they are that they food they get in their home country is not similarly contaminated. However, what they may not realize is just how much food comes from China and is not labelled as such.
Here in Canada one of the national news programs did an expose and found that something like 100% of fish like tilapia came from China. They went over there and filmed these fish pounds (obviously with great secrecy) and showed that were being similarly contaminated with chemical laden water. This fish was then exported to Canada and labelled "Made in Canada".
Many countries labelling laws state that at least 51% of COSTS must be incurred in the labelling country. So buy $490,000 of sketchy CCP tilapia, pay your CEO $510,000, and voila, Made in Canada.
All governments greedy corrupt
Also makes me wonder how much of that "seafood" company in "Canada" is controlled by the CCP.
Labeling laws are different for every industry. Labeling laws for a made in USA flashlight is completely different to a "farmed in USA" food product. You're either completely misunderstanding the way it works, or there's something wrong with Canada. That "pay the CEO $510k" scenario would never work in most places. The salary for the CEO is not a cost of the product.
Here in the US the typical workaround is for companies to label who the distributor is without saying the country of origin for the product. They usually do that to hide the fact that their products were likely made in China.
13:52 "they all look a little sickly"
I agree. I feel so sorry for these people who have no choice but to drink contaminated water, get cancer and end up looking like Fallout characters.
Good lord... I have a severe phobia of unsafe foods so I can't help but feel horribly for these people having to use this well. Oh my God.
What's the worst that can happen, food poisoning ? 😆

You two guys, please look carefully. Your beautiful mountains do not have old ancient trees left. They are only covered by small bushes or weeds. China have no big and tall trees left. It is so sad and depressing to see these treeless mountains.
Go visit the redwood forests in california if you ever get a chance. Beautiful, ancient, and hopefully will be around longer than we will.
Pal, if those mountains used to be covered in trees you'd notice. Forestry isn't just as simple as plucking the trees out of the earth, lmao. There's a LOT of heavy machinery involved and it leaves its marks on the ground.
@@mr.strugglesnuggle6668 Scotland and Ireland both used to be covered in trees. They are both now bog holes. Ireland is the interesting one here, since a lot of deforestation happened within the last 100 years, and is ongoing in some areas today (such as my old childhood home, which is now deforested completely). There are no marks except for when deforestation happens within five to ten years of observation.
@@mr.strugglesnuggle6668 empire has existed in china for thousands of years. Yeah, here in America all of the enviromental damage was done within the last 300 years, but in china those mountains might have been clear cut 1500 years ago

I'm definitely thinking twice about going to the Asian grocers in the city now. A lot of imported food from China and Japan. I'm not sure I trust any Chinese imported foods now.
@@savannahshane2231 I absolutely do not, but it has nothing to do with the people. I just chose to shop differently and organically usually. Pay more for safer foods.
@@bowsah5341 I one hundred percent respect that the people are victims and the government is the one in the wrong. My concern is government stamps saying yes, you can eat this and sell it overseas, but the food may still be contaminated. I will try to source more trustworthy items, if possible.
@@savannahshane2231 best of wishes for that. Maybe look into independent ways to test the food or find information about the companies? Hopefully possible.

17:58 "We could have theoretically jeopardized their entire tofu operations." I disagree. They did it to themselves and want to blame everyone else.
While the Chinese are fully at fault they meant if this information became public people would not longer purchase this tofu which would then jeopardize their operations. The Chinese totally look to place blame on others but they concern was the possible lack of money they would receive if the public learned about the infected water.
COmmunism may change countries and styles, but hate is always onsistent are the big fat lies about how wonderful everything is
I don't think the people filling the well water into the water cooler bottles are used to be sold as normal water cooler. I think they sold them as specialty healthy spring water for a lot more money.

My ex-wife was active in "missionary" work and she "imported" a man and his two teen-aged children (the three didn't come all at once) to the U.S. from Ghana. Thanks guys, this is amazing
"We went there to eat frick'n tofu and ended up getting chased out by the mafia". LOL

"When that goes a way, if that goes away, you can see it for yourself" :D It would be great. I agree. That'd totally happen here in Vietnam too... I got injured the other day and found out... Most hospitals and clinics take lunch breaks, one hospital's even closed on the weekends XD
Holy fuck this sounds like a typical fallout quest, but it's just China.
People all over the world need to be very careful about buying any food items that are made in China, from soft drinks, sauces, spices for cooking.... especially if you have a young child. Look for brands made in Taiwan, Hong Kong, southeast Asia instead.
Stick with local and fresh.

15:00 its this sort of thing why I'd never buy any food or medical products from China. Unfortunately companies that use ingredients from China are hardly going to tell you that.
The scary thing is that you probably do and don't even realize. For example, I remember reading about a few large hard cider brands that actually use apple pulp from China, rather than domestic apples. It's kind of hard to tell how much of this garbage has crept into our food at the ingredient level.
@@mtnvortex I'm probably safe there as there are a lot of apple producers around here and a place that makes cider. Its things like vitamins and medicines that most concern me as its pretty well near impossible to know where these are sourced.

May "Green-Bucket Man" never be forgotten.
In a flood of complacency he is the one Shouting against the wind, against being silenced, he alone, tries to change things.
In another life "Green-Bucket Man" could have been "Tank-man" standing at Tianmen-square stepping in the way of tanks to help, protect and save people.

Man I thought the internet pages were communiques from the tofu mafia about you! How sad was I to discover what it was about! :D
I was wondering, in an old video you guys mentioned how a drunk CCP official's son ran over people in an expensive car (I think it was a Porsche) and despite being filmed & photographed the son said something along the lines of "My dad is (Insert name)." As though he thought he was above the law.
I think the son was eventually arrested & sentenced and his dad was forced to resign but does anyone remember who the son & father were?
Well done!
Interesting as usual :-)
I saw at the well , some were using filter cloths !
Has any of that tofu been tested ?
It's not my field of work now, but I studied water supply design in graduate school, and it's a serious concern keeping surface pollution away from water well shafts.
Can you guys make a whole series of untold stories ??
I hope whoever buys the tofu would do research. But you would think USDA would test it before they can send it to the customer in the US. But I can't say what other countries do. I hope the man who showed you around is ok. Good people don't deserve such an uncaring gov't.

Later in my Shanghai life, I lived outside the city. The canal water was grey-black in color, and somehow the vegetables sold in the wet market survived to be sold.
The Tofu Mafia is one of the deadliest criminal organisations in China.
The oldest faction is known as the Bean Curd League, but newer groups have emerged like the Soyboys, the Tofu Eaters, and the Dau-Fu-Paws from Hong Kong, led by their ruthless boss, Stinky Tofu.
Their members are often seasoned gangsters, but due to their spongy nature, they absorb a lot of the local flavor. They are also relatively high in protein, and are quite popular with vegetarians.
This needs to get out more can i use parts of this video only if i verbally state your channel and link to it?

In the early 1700's there was a Cholera outbreak in London that was traced to a contaminated well. The well was in front of a house where someone came down with Cholera. The toilets in this house emptied into a cesspool under the house, which was a common practice during that time. The level of the water in the well was lower than the level of the cesspool. Sewage from the cesspool seeped down into the well, and scores of people who used this well died from Cholera. That situation is essentially identical to the well in this video. Dirty water is above and right next to this well. The well is clearly polluted. This Chinese city has water and sanitation practices that are the same as 1700's London. They are 300 years behind the times.
