1. LAN stands for Local Area Network While WAN stands for Wide Area Network.

3. LAN’s ownership is private. But WAN’s ownership can be private or public.
4. LAN’s design and maintenance is easy. While it’s design and maintenance is difficult than WAN.
5. The range of LAN is approximately between 10 to 1500 meter. While WAN has No Fixed distance. Computers all over the world can be connected.
6. LAN provides a high data transfer rate than WAN. It can reach up to 1000 Mbps. While WAN provides a relatively slower data transfer rate.10 - 20 MBps. Max. 150 MBps
7. LAN covers a small area; it can be set up very cheaply. The setup for WAN is high because of its wider geographical area.
8. LAN is cheaply compared to WAN. While WAN is costly compared to LAN. We have to pay monthly, quarterly, or yearly charges in WAN.
9. In LAN, It will be easy to manage data at only one place, which makes data more secure. While WAN is less secure than Wide area Network.
10. There is less congestion in Local Area Network. While there is more congestion in WAN.
11. The propagation delay is short in LAN. Whereas the propagation delay in WAN is long.
12. In LAN Co-axial cables & fiber optical cables are generally used to connect the computer and other devices. In WAN links are established using radio waves, microwave or satellite communication.
13. Protocols used in LAN are:-Ethernet, Omninet, ArcNet. Protocols used in WAN are:- Frame Relay, X.25, ATM, PPP (Point to Point Protocol) etc.
14. Examples of LAN:- home, office, school, or group of buildings. Examples of WAN:- Internet, ATM etc.
