Computer Network:- A computer network is defined as a system that connects two or more computing devices for transmitting and sharing information.
In general, Computer Network is a collection of two or more computers.
    Types of Network:-
    1. LAN:- LAN stands for Local Area Network. Local Area Network is a group of computers connected to each other in a small area such as building, laboratory, home, office etc. It is less costly as it is built with inexpensive hardware such as hubs, Switch, network adaptors, and Ethernet cables. A LAN can also be formed with two computers connected over a network. In a LAN, we can connect 100 to 1000 computers. LANs use both wired and wireless connectivity options. If a Local Area network is wireless then it is called wireless LAN (WLAN). Data of all network users can be stored on a single hard disk of the server computer i.e. centralised server. Any employee can access the data and files kept on the centralised server from his computer without going there.
LANs transmission speed is very high with very easy maintenance and very low cost.
    • LAN covers small geographic area.
    • So, data can be share in less geographic area.
    • There is a probability of virus and malware in this network.
    2. MAN:- A metropolitan area network is a network that covers a larger geographic area by interconnecting a different LAN to form a larger network. In MAN, various LANs are connected to each other through a telephone exchange line. It has a higher range than Local Area Network (LAN). It mostly covers towns and cities in a maximum 100 km range.
    • It is difficult to maintain and it comes with a high cost.
    • Government agencies use MAN to connect to the citizens and private industries.
    • MAN is used in communication between the banks in a city.
    • It can be used in a college within a city.
    • It can be used for communication in the military.
    • It can also be used in an Airline Reservation.
    3. WAN:- As the name suggests, the Wide Area Network is a network that covers a large geographic area such as states, countries, continents, or the entire world. A Wide Area Network is quite bigger network than the LAN & MAN. It is also known as the LAN of LANs. The most common example of WAN is the Internet. With the help of Internet, people can connect from one place to anywhere in the world.
Wide Area Network is of two types:- 1. Enterprise WAN 2. Global WAN
The WAN network is provided via several methods such as telephone lines, fiber optics cable, and also through satellite links. WAN requires high initial investment cost. WAN is Hard to handle as the network is vast and complex. The companies which provide this network are known as Network Service Provider. It has slow data transmission speed. WAN may include advanced technologies such as synchronous Optical Network (SONET), Frame Relay and ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode).
A Wide Area Network is widely used in the field of Business, government, and education.
Disadvantages of WAN:- 1. An installation cost of the WAN network is high as it involves the purchasing of routers, switches.
    2. The problem of server down persists in WAN network.
    3. Hard to handle as the network is vast and complex.
    4. Less secure:- The data is transferred on the internet which can be changed or hacked by the hackers, so the firewall needs to be used.
    4. PAN:- PAN is the smallest and most basic type of computer network. Personal Area Network is used for connecting the computer devices of personal use. Thomas Zimmerman was the first research scientist to bring the idea of the Personal Area Network. Personal computer devices that are used to develop the personal area network are the laptop, mobile phones, Printer, Video game console, media layer and play stations. PAN offers a network range of 1 to 10 meters from person to device providing communication.
Personal Area Network is of two types:- 1. Wireless PAN :-The Wireless Personal Area Network is set up using wireless technologies such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and NFC, etc.
    2. Wired PAN :- : A wired personal area network is set up using wired cables on a USB (universal serial bus).
HAN (Home Area Network) :- HAN is used to share various computers or peripheral devices used in the same home. Through this network, we can connect all the devices of the house like- computer, laptop, smart phone etc.
CAN (Campus Area network):- This is a type of computer network that is usually used in places like a school or colleges. This network covers a limited geographical area that is, it spreads across several buildings within the campus.
