    Direct injection always makes for dirty looking oil. Visibly dirty oil isn’t a bad thing as long as viscosity remains proper though. It just means the detergents are doing their job and pulling out those carbon and other deposits rather than letting them make home in your engine permanently.

      Actually, with 20 miles on that bike, that is still the “break-in oil” which is usually a non-detergent oil with no additives. That is why it needs to be changed out after around 500 miles. It ends up really dirty (which is OK, because that’s its job) and usually stinks REALLY nasty.

    Shift lever for mine is coming soon. I added different pegs, changed to Barkbusters, added doubletake adventure mirrors. Kenda Trackmaster rear, Goldentyre Fatty on front. Low profile drain plug in hand. Awaiting crash bars also. I'm going to add some black vinyl wrap to protect the lower portion of the fairing from rock chips and to individualize it. I added a 12 volt plug from 3D cycles easily. See my install video. Looking forward to more KLR videos!

    @mr.morris3829 Před 2 lety +2

    Hey man, I bought the 2022 KLR650 Adventure Camo and I agree with on most of the things your not liking. I don't mind the rubber foot pegs, I also did remove those dumb ass plastic hand guards. I need to get that upgraded low pro oil change plug for sure! Also on the left side of my adventure model is a USB Port and the opening to the right is actually a generic type 12v outlet. I installed a aftermarket shifter which I absolutely love it seems far better engineered than stock. I have the heated hand grips on backorder can't wait for those! One more thing that I absolutely love is the factory fog lamps on mine damn are the super bright but also make the bike even more bad ass looking!!
    As far as the color of the oil I'm glad I watched your video because my oil was the exact same way with only a few miles on it I was like WTF!! I ended up changing it myself at around 125mi using Kawasaki Regular 4 stroke oil, it wasn't super black but looked like it had more like at least 3-4k miles on it. Again after a very short period like around 360mi the oil seriously looked freaking diesel oil! At 1000 miles I finally switched to Amsoil 100% Synthetic 10W50. I love Amsoil products! The shifting to me is definitely better. Anyways for the oil color issue I'm sure many if not all KLR650 owners are having this issue and most likely 80 percent of them haven't even noticed. It does to me sound like a bearing or something wearing hard inside the engine. My bike now has just over 1,500 miles on it with the same Amsoil in it and still looks just as dark as the Kawasaki brand oil. So hopefully someone out there has had to of heard something about the issue. I gonna call Kawasaki tomorrow and follow up with them. I'll keep you posted. Thanks,
    Scott.

      Hey Scott, I just installed a longer shift lever on mine too! Really makes it a lot more enjoyable to ride. I'm interested to hear what Kawasaki says about the oil, does seem odd that it's that dark but maybe it's just that dark at 0 miles? I guess I never looked haha. I'm going to change mine after a few more miles and put my low pro plug in! I installed a 12 volt port on the knock out on the right side of mine, kind of an odd spot but it works.

    J. Darn your busy these days. Way to go! Not every video needs to be full length feature. I like the little point to point. Calling out crap when crap needs calling out. Your right on about those crash bars on the adventure- truth is I first thought that the Adventure was a big savings- until I noticed as you did those bars are like the same thickness as the copper pipe in my old cabin. I’m not sold on the saddle bags either but at least they provide the ability to upgrade or replace with the pannier supports. Great to see they added the spaces to put your own electronics- that’s cool. With your bike you can put your own combination of electronics in there. It was always just dead space- smart to use it. But the Adventure isn’t all that much of a deal after you crash(drop) and have to replace the bars- lights and three grand worth of plastics. As far as bars go , I’ve tried two different crash bars I like the GIVI best but they are buggers to fit on. I also like the dirt tracks full body bars. I put them on my buddies bike you can tell these things are sturdy and great to mount lights and accessories on. I now have my 1/4” plate steel skid plate that was custom made from a cardboard pattern by a local welding shop. Funny thing is I forgot about the oil plug from hell and had to go get a low profile because I had the plug out when I made the
    Template. The new plate adds about 10 lbs to the bike but it low so it’s good weight. I’ll never buy another skid plate again at 150$ was a steal(steel) lol. Another enjoyable video. Staying swanky!

    • @SwankyCatProductions
      @SwankyCatProductions  Před 2 lety

      Hey Jim. Yeah the adventure model does have some nice components but honestly I think most of the time after market parts are cheaper and better. If you don't mind installing them yourself it think it's definitely the way to go. I'm not sure why they cheap out on stuff like that but oh well. The rest of the bike seems to be set up really well. I too like the space for switches and outlets. I just wired in a 12 volt plug last night and using the wires waiting for my under the fairing was pretty nice. Seems like the wires are going to be pretty close to my barkbusters... But I'll make it work. That's awesome about the skid plate! I've been promised one for testing already but that sounds like a really cool option! Being able to spec out what you want to protect would be really nice!

    I've got just under 2k miles on my new klr adventure. So far I've done; tusk low pro drain plug, tusk +10mm shifter, ims pegs, double take mirrors, tusk Hand guards, an exhaust because I can't stand the scooter sound, and immediately swaped out the stock tires for a set of continentals. Bad news, the faring vibration doesn't stop, no amount of checking bolts or loctite will fix it, I've finally figured out what actually causes the rattle and I'm resorting to some rubber weatherstripping to save my sanity, it has ruined every video, it's the only sound my gopro will pick up over 10mph. The factory crash protection does its job but not as solid as the aftermarket stuff. My big disappointment (and I wasn't psyched with them to begin with) is the hard panners, kawasaki put lots of thought into making them quick remove but in that process put 0 thought In to what happens if you set the bike down, spoiler alert, it breaks the cheap plastic tab that holds them to the frame and even though it's clearly able to be replaced, kawasaki doesn't have just that part available, I'll swap on a better set up after I beat the hell out of these some more. Overall I'm happy with it, I'd prefer the t7 of course but not at the price difference.

    • @SwankyCatProductions
      @SwankyCatProductions  Před 2 lety

      That's pretty disappointing about the panniers. I suppose they have a budget they need to stay under and just hope that people want them for looks and figure most people won't put them to the test. Hopefully you find a good solution! I'm surprised about the fairing noise, I tightened my fairing fasteners up a bit and mine went away completely... Wonder if it could have something to do with the crash protection creating a weird harmonic resonance that I don't get on my base model?

    • @nathanielmutka4390
      @nathanielmutka4390 Před 2 lety

      @@SwankyCatProductions I knew Id be swapping the panners when I bought it, the dirtracks set up with some tusk hard boxes will actually add some rear crash protection and give me what I want. The trim piece just sits too close to the fairing for how it's attached, with one bolt and 2 rubber grommets, i think the light bar moves it just enough to cause an issue. I just picked up some thin rubber weatherstripping I'll run around the back of the trim pieces and make a gasket like I think kawasaki should have done to protect tank paint and fairings to begin with.

      I am in Florida, I weight 220 pounds. I have put my first 700 miles on the bike, mostly highway as I commute to and from work. FL highway speeds average 75, I've had it to 90 on a test. Florida drivers are notorious for speeding and tailgating, so it was extremely important to me to be able to accelerate away from dangerous tailgaters, hold highway speed comfortably and get to where I can ride some gravel trails. At my weight, the bike accelerated very well. With an additional rider (wife, 120#) it got a little slower to accelerate but not terrible (that's 340 total pounds on the bike). My previous bikes were very big Goldwings (1200 to 1500 cc) and a Suzuki Savage single cylinder 4-speed. So the KLR has the same displacement as the Savage, but is much peppier, and cruises at highway speeds without feeling stressed. The only thing I would want to add for highway usage is a cruise control, so I can periodically rest my right arm and hand. I have felt a little road vibration and numbness after an hour, it was important to shake the arm a little and let the fingers rest a few seconds. I dont' want to leave it on cruise for a long time, but it is nice to rest and flex the hand periodically without going to 0 throttle and a quick deceleration on the highway. Tires on highway: great. Breaks: great. Windscreen: I raised to higher level as I was getting too much buffeting in my adventure helmet at 75 to 80. Hope that is helpful info. I love my KLR and am happy I bought it.

    Personally for that size and weight bike, I would not be throwing it around in technical stuff. Fire roads, tarmacs, gravel of course, moderate exploration of the more technical trailheads to get a feel of whether or not I wanted to come back and use a proper bike on them. I agree with you 100 % about them foot pegs. Pathetic! And of course bark busters for sure. Never seen a drain plug so vulnerable on a trail bike. But as I said, I would not be doing technical stuff with such a heavy bike anyhow. So, I am sure it would be fine. I miss my 99 KLR 250 dearly. Had the proper pegs, bark busters and it looked great in Forest Bluish. The only thing that I would have liked to have had was electric start. Hell when I'm running Amsoil with their brand filter I change it every year or 15,000 miles sometimes gone longer just depending on what the results are from the lab are that I send a small sample of the oil at the 15k mark is.
    I'm most likely going do the same thing with my KLR650 except for the oil filter. I'll change that when Kawasaki recommends only because currently Amsoil don't make a non spin on external oil for the bike. Wix filters due they make a really good filter!

    Pegs are a non issue for me. Primarily road riding with some 2 track. Shift lever not a problem, don't wear motocross boots. Lace up combat boots. I have the original hand guards on my 2011. The handguards have never given me a problem and keep the rocks from smacking my curled fingers. I have a Cee Bailey windscreen that comes right below eye level. Agree that the windscreen that comes with the bike is a non starter for me as well. I put aftermarket electric outlets all over the dash and the handlebars for gps, phone etc. Doohickied, Thermobobed, sprocketed, center standed and I love my '11 KLR. 25,000 mostly trouble free miles. I got hit by a deer on I-5 in Washington was pretty much the only thing that's happened and I made it through that fine. Yes the dee hit the side of my bike. Nice video. As far as I know the counter balance tensioner set up remains the same. So in theory, the issue is still there. I personally don't worry about it since I've put 24k on a bike without issues. After 30k miles I think it's safe to assume most bikes will start to experience issues of one type or another anyhow. So unless I was going to run one past that, I just don't see the need. That being said I do believe it's a weak point and is worth it if it'll either make the owner feel better or if they plan on keeping it past 30k.

    @redspartacus1919 Před 2 lety

    I got mine ( the basic without ABS ) in September and can confirm the foot pegs are a joke and shifting requires a yoga course. I always imagine how this bike was designed for the average Japanese. The passenger foot pegs are even tinier. Oil gets dirty, then it's working. The windshield is not a windshield but it brakes the air. On the bright side no buffeting. You don't have to worry about the Dunlops for long. Mine have 40% thread left after 1000 km. Interesting for me is that with all the reviews about the new Gen3 KLR nobody noticed that the bike accelerates by its own. Pull the clutch lever and slowly move it back, the engine starts to rev higher. According to the Kawasaki dealer all new bikes with fuel injection do so. That makes me feel old. Good thing is you have a hard time to stall the engine.
    A lot of people highlight that this bike is slow. I think it's fast but I'm coming from fat Harleys and a cruising riding style. My first change to the bike are the Moose racing foot pegs with 1/2" rear offset. They need a little adjustment, the hole for the original pin is too small. Snow is expected soon where I life and the KLR is hibernating now.
    I'm really curious on what you can find for the frame protection. I subscribed and hope I can hear about your findings. Wish you a safe ride.

The upper light accessory light bar is stronger than you think, it will get destroyed but will save more plastic than not having it. This is KLR NUMBER 6, not new to them, loose hardware from factory is unforgivable, can't blame that on it being a thumper. But- they will work if you are willing to accept their shortfalls.
    However, after you dump your food in your lap or on the floor, you’re ready to pay the extra money next time and get plates that are up to the task.

    Did you fix the doohickey yet? Engine will start eating oil unless you do it within 5k miles. I'm confused to why Americans like this bike, the engine is a turd...

      No I'm going to wait until the spring loses tension. Another issue is the cooling system that dumps cold coolant into a hot engine. I've fixed that with a Thermo-bob. I think someone from every country loves them lol.

      The Doohickey has no correlation to the oil consumption issue. Oil consumption is from a cheesily designed piston
