Wait until you hear Leader of the band. That’s his masterpiece. It makes me cry every time I hear it and I heard 1 million times.
We’ve all been there. These songs are timeless and universal.
My favorite song of his Leader of the Band and I love it how in this series he explains the backstory behind it. It's absolutely beautiful.
Dan has a way with lyrics. He has many great storytelling songs. He's very underappreciated. One of his early records had Joe Walsh produce it and many of the Eagles play back up. I've certainly had the experience of running into a former flame and trying to catch up. Truly thinking about Auld Lang Syne.
He was a songwriters songwriter. He was absolutely phenomenal. I loved him.
If you look at Fogelberg's Wikipedia page, the ex-girlfriend came forward after his death and acknowledged that this meeting really did happen, in mostly the way that he described in the song. She took the meeting as a sign that she needed to consider her life and ended up divorcing the architect. She waited until after his death in consideration of his wife, because she didn't want to jeopardize his marriage.
Actually, the song had no impact on their marriage. She had already divorced the man by the time the song came out. It’s probably part of the reason she won’t talk about the line “She would have liked to say she loved the man, but she didn’t like to lie”, as she felt it was too personal.
@@JoeB0y16I think they mean Dan's relationship, not the woman
That's storytelling at it's best.
When he died, I cried like a baby. He was so friggin talented. Everything he wrote. You could relate to very few songwriters can do that. Roy Orbison was one of them, but very few remain by Dan Fogelberg.
His former lover came out about this song after his passing in December 2007, Her name is Jill Anderson Greulich who now resides in Saint Louis, Missouri. They were High School sweethearts at Peoria High School in Peoria, Illinois and her real life husband was a P. E Teacher not an Architect.
Love this song.
Love his music. Great songwriter and singer. Definitely can relate to this song.
Wow! I remember loving this when it came out. He's a great singer/songwriter! One of my favorite lyrics of all time (any genre) is. "...I stole behind her in the frozen foods, and I touched her on the sleeve." Something about that line. It's like I can SEE it happening when he sings it... it makes me smile a little every time. Also, something seemed a little off when you stopped after the "We drank a toast to now..." The next line is, "We tried to REACH beyond the emptiness, but neither one knew how." Definitely some deep philosophical 'stuff.' Your minor mistake of 'drink' versus 'reach' actually would have (in my opinion) been a BETTER line! Great reaction (almost as good as your Rich Man/Rich Girl reaction)! I KNEW that subscribing to you was a good idea! Merry Christmas!
Dan is like your favorite songwriter's favorite songwriter.
Edit: lol i wrote this before seeing someone else write a similar comment
Another…old…lang…syne. And I lose it EVERY SINGLE TIME.
I love Dan Fogelberg! Thanks, Brad. Merry Christmas!
An excellent reaction, and it is a true story......
Have an Awesome Christmas Brad!!!
You too!
one of -if not the greatest -singer songwriter, musician in US history. Dan Fogelberg was/is just something special./
I’ve loved this song and story since it came out in 1981!! But I’ve got to say, they definitely weren’t in Wisconsin, because at least one bar in every town is open on Christmas Eve & Day!!! I thinks it’s in our state constitution or something 😂
Peoria, Illinois
Love this one- thanks for your reaction! Merry Christmas!
Thank you! You too!
I can't personally relate to anything in this song, but I enjoyed the storytelling.
My mother loved singer-songwriters from this era. Lots of great storytellers! For a similar theme, but very different execution, check out Harry Chapin's "Taxi".
Hearing him do his songs live is special. They have even more soul than the studio recordings. However, the high harmony voices on this song are better-balanced in the studio cut.
Oh, by the way... I've never heard this live version before. Thanks again!
Who’s here after hearing the Backstreet Boys version
Come on, sad saxophone! Bring us to the end.
When you get old enough it will have meaning. Until then you will just be an immature child.
I guess he can't get the high notes anymore like what's on the studio recording.
