My friend sang this at his Dad’s funeral. He was a Jazz Trumpet player.
Dan Fogelberg through this song got to thank his father for all he had done; to thank his father for pouring his life into Dan & preparing his young son for life as an adult; and to remind his father that he loved him [even though he didn’t tell his father that he loved him enough]. He got to tell his father all of this in a song before his father passed away. So, when Dan’s father did die several years after this song was released- Dan had no regrets. He had made sure that his father knew the impact he had on Dan’s life & that he was proud to be the living legacy of the leader of the band.
A tribute to our Dads.
Leader of the band is literally Dan himself. His dad was the band leader of Peoria high’s marching band but was a cabinet maker back in Scotland. Dan with the help of his dad lead a routine of it when he was four. Dan’s brothers went to St. Paul and Chicago for business while he was in Colorado on a ranch he built himself. Dan studied music and theater work at university. His first four performances after his discovery dan skipped out on due to illness or stage fright but only he knows. Dan eventually became a legend on the stage. Dan died of Cancer in 2007 at age 56 and was per request his ashes were scattered around Deer Island up in Maine though a memorial plaque was put on his ranch in Colorado and his home in Maine.
Everyone knew his work and really enjoyed what he did. A true legacy he created.
Woodruff High in Peoria, not Peoria High.
his mom was first generation American from Scotland not born here but came over when she was about three, his father was Swedish, Dans father was the son of a cabinet maker not a cabinet maker himself according to the song very talented man probably one of the best songwriters this country has ever produced
His mother was 1 generation American came from Scotland at a very young age (about three) his father was Swedish, Dans dads dad was a cabinet not his father according to the song
Dan Fogelberg is paying homage to his dying father Lawrence Fogelberg who was a band director in his Hometown of Peoria, illinois the song is very emotional as it's truth based.
I'm crying every time while listening his song. He's a good telling stories.
Leader of the Band
Dan Fogelberg
An only child alone and wild
A cabinetmaker's son
His hands were meant
For different work
And his heart was known to none
He left his home and went his lone
And solitary way
And he gave to me a gift I know
I never can repay
A quiet man of music
Denied a simpler fate
He tried to be a soldier once
But his music wouldn't wait
He earned his love through discipline
A thundering, velvet hand
His gentle means of sculpting souls
Took me years to understand
The leader of the band is tired
And his eyes are growing old
But his blood runs through my instrument
And his song is in my soul
My life has been a poor attempt
To imitate the man
I'm just a living legacy
To the leader of the band
My brothers' lives were different
For they heard another call
One went to Chicago
And the other to St. Paul
And I'm in Colorado
When I'm not in some hotel
Living out this life I've chose
And come to know so well
I thank you for the music
And your stories of the road
I thank you for the freedom
When it came my time to go
I thank you for the kindness
And the times when you got tough
And, papa, I don't think I said
'I love you' near enough
The leader of the band is tired
And his eyes are growing old
But his blood runs through my instrument
And his song is in my soul
My life has been a poor attempt
To imitate the man
I'm just a living legacy
To the leader of the band
I am a living legacy to the leader of the band

you have a very pure heart!! bless you child of god!!
❤ You can take away his voice and with just the guitar, it's still so beautiful
Such a beautiful song. I love the simplicity of the music and his voice The music from my era had so much meaning. We are both living legacies 💙❤️💕😍
Thank you, Julie!!! I had almost forgot about this song! When this LP came out my best friend loved his music, and we played his music in the car wherever we went...My friend died in 2005 and this brought such good memories...You're right our era of music was so very special.
Julie, I am planning to adopt Peace Dora, if she'll have me! My partner and I will bring her to the states , this is all up to her but she'll be my daughter forever!!
This song is so beautiful
Please be thankful you are in a position to be a legacy still. Thankfully Dan left this magnificent song as legacy to his father then left us all too soon back in 2007 at only age 57.
Thank you, Peace. It is a great thing for a father to be honored in the way Dan did. Beautiful.
Check out Scarecrow's Dream by Dan Fogelberg!
Try reacting to "The Living Years," by Mike and the Mechanics. It's another song about a Father - Son relationship. It's another tear - jerker.
Great song❤
I’ve always liked Dan Fogelberg & have a couple of his albums, which is big for me as I didn’t often buy whole albums but just the 45 rpm singles. This is a touching tribute to his father & is beautiful besides. Another song I enjoy from Dan is Run for the Roses, about a young foal raised to run in the Kentucky Derby, a very famous horse race, told from the horses point of view. Big radio hit. Check it out if you’d like! 😄
I appreciate your reaction. It is very sad even I should’ve chair when I hear this song and I appreciate your honesty keep going. I am a new subscriber but I’m gonna keep on going with this subscription. Thank you.
