Synonymous with European nights at Anfield, Liverpool fans have long belted out Gerry and the Pacemaker's version of You'll Never Walk Alone in the terraces before games begin.
It has became one of the most well known and loved songs in football fan culture, but what are the songs origins when it comes to being so beloved on the red part of Merseyside - and why did it become Liverpool's own?

as a Dortmund fan the song just means community for me. standing in the crowd, you are not just an individual but one part of a huge fan culture of the biggest sport in the world. the song belongs to liverpool, yes, but I think this is THE football song that unites all of us. we love football and no matter what colours we support, we are one family. football is a sport that needs two teams to be played. this means you need to give everything to support your team and you also have to pay respect for your opponent at any time. only together can football, the thing we love, be realized
Thats a Liverpool song clearly adopted it first. Just curious why doesnât Dortmund singing German songs or sing it in German??
@@BeitBridg Dortmund sing a bunch of songs. do you really think they only sing YNWA? :D YNWA is the only non-german song sung by Dortmund supporters as far as I know.

Been a Liverpool fan my entire life, and so was my dad. He passed away when I was 12, back in 2012. YNWA has so much meaning for my family and we sing it every year in celebration of him. Klopp should coach at Celtic and Feyenoord to complete the set
Ange and Klopp job swap will happen
â@Regi Blinkered While it's almost guaranteed that Ange will manage a top EPL club, there's no chance Klopp will end up at Celtic Parkđ
Bearing in mind that Klopp is said to be on FIFTEEN million a year, while Ange is on somewhere between ÂŁ2 - ÂŁ2.5m.
Klopp isn't coming to Glasgow for that...besides the SPL offers nothing for a guy in his position.

Dunno how attractive he'd find the job though - I suppose it'd depend on when the position came up and where he was in his career đ

You pick the place and I'll choose the time - and I'll climb, that hill in my own way...
In germany the first club that adopted Youll never Walk Alone was Kaiserslautern in the early 90s.
St Pauli still sings it too, which Seb should know.
That is perfect timing for Liverpool big win đ
Possibly the greatest, and certainly most moving rendition of YNWA was sung at Celtic Park, when Kenny Dalglish brought Liverpool to Glasgow for the Hillsborough benefit match.
The crowd was unsegregated, which only added to the occasion.
Yeah, that one brought tears to grown men
The one after 4-0 barcelona hits incredibly hard as well
Has to be Dortmund in the Europa League in April 2016 for me. Literally the whole stadium singing in unison, so close to the anniversary of Hillsborough and less than 2 weeks before the publication of the inquest declaring the 97 unlawfully killed. It really hit home that day what it meant to be fans together in a stadium
Liverpool and Celtic have always been buddies. Up the Liverpool and celtic đŽâïž
Well, you have just described how culture forms and gains significance. Beautiful.
Pink Floyd also incorporated the Liverpool YNWA chant in their song Fearless from the early 70's, a very good one I must say
I always thought they mixed liverpool and Everton fans together, to me it always sounded like everpool?
It's amazing how organically it became their anthem.
Iâve figured out why Joeâs narration is the best: he doesnât speedrun the voiceover and he enunciates each word separately.
Just not able to listen with the voiceover. The previous was so much more legible and so clear.
Amazing Video, eventho very fast pasted. The arts have a big impact on the football world and makes the culture of certain clubs stand out! Would be interestin to explore the overlap more in the future.
What I love about YNWA is, it's not really a football song but a song about the up-and-down of life, about gathering the strength to get through setbacks, tragedies in life, and during that process we realize that there are people who will be with you and help you overcome those setbacks.
That's what life should be, it won't never be easy-going but you and your families, your friends, your comrades will be better after heartbreaks. And Liverpool had so many difficult moments in its history, and it still stays strong after those. It simply resonates with me than other songs (especially the "Glory, Glory" song that Spurs, Man Utd and Leeds have), I always get emotional when listening to it.
Seb, I'm digging the work, but it feels like you're almost rushing through everything. Just add a bit more pause at periods and ESPECIALLY at the end of paragraphs/sections and it'd be significantly better. These videos feel almost like a verbal sprint to get through them, and the speed doesn't really let the words sink in.
You're so right. I could hardly catch up with what he was saying
Such a blessing city for giving the world beautiful music and a great football team. Fans chanting started to emerge in the 60s the first club to put a records on PA speaker is Liverpool
The city of Liverpool also designed and created goal nets. If it wasnât for the scousers, weâd still be chasing after our footballs after every goal đ

Iâm Liverpool fan and Real Madrid because Ronaldo became my favourite player all time when he was at Real Madrid, but when he went back to Manchester United, I only liked Ronaldo but not man united, when Ronaldo lost his child, I just loved when my fellow Liverpool Supporters did for him at the 7th minute. Also with how much respect as Liverpool supporters has shown to Real Madrid, and Real Madrid has shown to Liverpool makes me delighted as a fan of both clubs in separate leagues.
Liverpool-7 Manchester United -0,what a night it was!
I'd love to have Ange as Klopp's successor
Liverpool has the best rendition of You'll Never Walk Alone, in my opinion.
I myself am a Feyenoord fan, but I prefer to sing some of our other songs. Though the Towers' version of You'll Never Walk Alone we adopted in late 1970s is fantastic too.
I read about this story first in John Greenâs wonderful book âThe Anthropocene Reviewedâ.
As a music teacher, it's agonising to listen to the crowds at Anfield sing it, because the song is in a 6/8 time signature, but the crowd always tries to squeeze it into 4/4, and ends up doing neither. I always wish there was someone there with a megaphone or a drum keeping them in time. Please count to six. Count to siiiiiiiiix.
Youâd get laughed out of anfield if you brought in a megaphone or a drum đ
Thatâs the problem with music teachers ,they are too stiff arsed to appreciate the difference between just singing a song & delivering it with soul .
You can just about take your bottle of water in, never mind a whole band of instruments đ
Bring the old voiceover guy back pleaseđąđąđą

Loads of clubs used to sing YNWA. From Celtic to Leeds. Some like Celtic still do.

Liverpool sang it first as the video explains
They all sing it because of Liverpool.

I could be wrong, but I reckon Gerry Marsden knew this song from Gene Vincentâs 1957 version rather than the original musical.

Voice over quality is low on this one...
We at Feyenoord are well aware of the fact that it is made in Liverpool, and can never be done the way they do it there. But the message is the same, even across the sea.
Thanks, Tifo! Hearing Seb doing the voiceover is a nice change!
Telemundo here in America and the rest of Latin America at the bottom the screen wrote in the small box that in 1945 Liverpool adopted the song and the one's who created it where from Liverpool. Chilling video.
