I think the idea that people gave up on the show after Tennant is overblown. It only took me two episodes to accept Matt and move on. When he ended his tenure I saw him and Tennant as the greatest of the Nu Who Doctors (as [CENSORED] is clearly the tops of Classic Who).

Like the bees disappearing, many other types they hint at over time old and new of Nu Who details, but ducks, the house. Whatever else. I don't remember the S5 finale well at all so much S5+ I don't remember, I do some bits and pieces of some good episodes sometimes some average ones.
      Ok Pandorica remember that now.
Some finales I don't remember. I remember a Town called Christmas and maybe a few others, maybe some Capaldi moments, I have not rewatched S5+ episodes at all only first viewing while others around me had rewatched a few times.
Rewatched and what the writers always hide. The Doctor's name, wedding, they say so much then we rewatch and go ah yes. They love to mess with us viewers. XD But we also appreciate it because the details are so great and then when we see them later on we go wow it was worth it. It varies but they do usually end up good.

Well, here we are. This is the story of Amelia Pond, and this is how it begins.
First off, Matt Smith just crushes it right out of the chute, doesn’t he? It’s really not hard to see why so many embrace either him or David as their Doctor. He gets so many angles on the Doctor, the alien side, the funny side, the “Wow, he’s kind of scary right now” side and the side that you just want to take him home for coffee. He’s brilliant.
And in case I didn’t tip it off, although I’d rank her behind Donna overall, Amy is my Companion. I love her to absolute bits as an avatar for Alice in Wonderland and as that girl with the crush who never quite got over it twelve years later. She’s smart, she’s funny, she can be scary too in her own way. And of course, red hair - my kryptonite.
Funny thing, at least by CZcams time, The Eleventh Hour debuted 14 years ago last week. Funny how time works, isn’t it? But yes, this is a gem, it’s in my personal top five and my girl is finally here. Yeah, this is great.

Historically the producers of Doctor Who made sure that there was a companion or two making the transition between Doctors, to help the audience make that leap from their old favourite to the new one. It was a very conscious decision to stop viewers turning off. This episode as such very much broke with that tradition. I very much remember watching this for the first time, and by the end of the episode feeling 'pretty safe'. I was skeptical about Matt Smith - youngest actor ever to play the Doctor... and indeed we had no companions to reassure us that everything was going to be okay. Having him burst through the "display" of previous Doctors felt rather forced (!), but - well - I love a bit of flashback... My appreciation for Matt has grown upon subsequent viewings, and there has been MANY, because - my oldest son's Doctor IS Matt Smith. :) He had the "steam punk" TARDIS console play set, he had the sonic, the... ahh, we haven't got there yet. A really great start to the Matt Smith era when i first watched this because i grew up and seen all of the 10 Doctors before him i straight away warmed up up to the new Doctor i was ready for David Tennant to leave if i'm honest, at the end of the episode when the newly regenerated Doctor walked through the hologram after showing the previous Doctors talking to the atraxi telling him "Hello i'm the Doctor, so basically run" and i thought immediately "Yes! that is The Doctor" that was one the most epic scenes and it's actually believable by his personality that this Doctor is the old man inside a young man and how alien he is and it shows.
I have to say though i don't understand why they asked you to avoid looking at the previous 8 Doctors as it doesn't really give away anything storywise but it doesn't matter you'll meet them eventually.
I love Amy Pond she's one my all time favourite companions out of the entirety of NuWho apart from another one which i won't name as that one won't arrive till later but Amy has so much sass and character and reminds me of an Emma Peel sidekick type of character from the british 60's show "The Avengers". (nothing to do with marvel).
I wasn't the biggest fan of Steven Moffat's writing style at times only because of the whole fairytale aspect and the convoluted plots but some of his episodes are good and consistent and he did create the most iconic Weeping Angels.
Just on the subject of romance with the Doctor and his companions when it came to Rose and Martha because they had romantic feelings towards him that never sat well with me because he's a 900 year old ancient a-sexual alien he always treated them no more than friends, or a niece or a daughter so i find it weird why he be interested in 19 year old female earthlings i always see the Doctor as a-sexual but i'm fine companions having romance elsewhere just not with the Doctor but that's just my opinion.
The episode itself was fantastic from start to finish.
This is not only the first to introduce the new console room inside the TARDIS but also a new TARDIS prop as well as the ambulance st. john sign on the door and white sequared windows which were not seen since the William Hartnell days.

26:6 There are definitely two schools of thought there. On the one hand, what better time to fresh the show than with a new doctor? Creative was changing up behind the scenes, some new writers and production people, new lead actor, new show runner.. It's like a 2.0. Also, some of it as I recall was the result of wanting to update for the switch to HD television. Tennant's run ended right on the sadle line of HD. I know some people really did not take to the new era, but when you look back over the previous four years from this point ir really does make a lot of ense to do that... and honestly it did happen a few times in the classic show's run as well. Going from Doctor 2 to 3 was the era we went from black and white to color, for example, and with it there was a format change.

  • @SmazSolaire

There were a lot of changes, but it absolutely had to go all in with them. At the time, Doctor Who was massive in the UK and no (and I mean no one) believed Matt Smith was up to the job of taking over what Tennant left behind. I'm so glad they all went full force with the change whilst at the same time still keeping the formula that worked from the RTD era. This is honestly an amazing first Doctor episode for it.

Regardless of mixed feelings from the fans about his era, there’s no denying that Matt Smith absolutely killed it in the role. He perfectly makes it his own while very much retaining aspects of 10 so you can still tell it’s the same person

  • @jameshilton7894

You know whats crazy? Originally, if David Tennant agreed to do 1 more season the idea was that Amy would have found 10 right before he was going to regenerate when she was just a girl. Then 10 would leave and regenerate. Then years later Amy would see 10 again. But this would be 10 from the past. They pulled a time travel shenanigan. Where 10 knew who Amy was when he met her as a kid because through his pov they met and went on Adventures already. The version of 10 Amy meets later would have been 10 meeting her for the first time through his pov. The first season with Amy would be leading up to 10's regeneration. Time catching up with 10.
The idea of David and Amy meeting and having Adventures is just insane to me.

There was many people I knew in school who stopped watching here. I have talked to people in years since who haven't watched the show since Tennant was the Doctor. With everything new, it did turn a lot of people away. But there are also people who stopped watching when Capaldi took over due to modern audiences being familiar with a younger Doctor and thought it was weird.
The series chages a lot and that is one of the reasons it has been successful in staying around for 60 years.

Well, the first episode I ever saw; I'd first heard about the show back in 2004 thanks to some Whovian friends but for various reasons didn't get around to checking it out until 2010. I went in expecting to like it. I did not expect to fall madly in love with it less than 5 minutes in. I remember getting chills the first time I heard the theme music. Naturally, Matt Smith is my Doctor, and while Donna is my favorite companion, Amy's not far behind.

It's so great that you (probably) kinda got everything you wanted from this new doctor era. Because you wanted 2 companions for an extended period of time and you wanted a guy friend for the doctor. Which Rory isn't necessarily a "friend" of the doctor most of the time. But he's an amazing companion and challenges the doctor in ways that are so well portrayed. I can't wait to see your reactions to this whole era and beyond!

Still, for my money, one of (if not) _the_ best nuWho intro episodes to a Doctor. Pacey but still takes the time to nicely establish the new Doctor, new companion, their dynamic _and_ the series arc. _And_ it's genuinely witty too IMO.
11's slightly lower-key menace ("I'm the Doctor. Basically... run") and awkward, eccentric Oxbridge don persona hit the sweet spot for me (by being almost its exact opposite it's the perfect follow-up to 10's suave, worldly swashbuckler), so I was sold on Smith pretty much from the get-go.
