  • The top reasons for Basic training failure in the British Army is what this video is all about. Please be aware everyone's experiences can differ, these are just the main reasons I seen during my time as a Basic training instructor. I've designed this video to be informative and a source of information for people who could be potentially looking at starting basic training or already there, for either the British Army or you could relate this to basic training for most military service. Not just the British Army.

    Don't be afraid to quit if it's not for you.
    I was 17 when I joined in 2006. I realised a few weeks in that it wasn't for me, but not wanting to be judged or feel as though I'd let my Dad down, I stuck it out.
    I volunteered on interest day to go 29 Commando (artillery), got through all my training, got onto my Commando course, completed it, by which point I was 18 & would be stuck in until I was 22.
    I absolutely HATED my life. Hated being in camp, hated being on exercise, hated being deployed, heated wearing the uniform, shaving every day, etc. it just made me so miserable & I craved my freedom & to feel as though I belonged to myself again.
    Felt incredible when I eventually did get out, that was 10 years ago.
    The point I'm trying to make is if you do go in & find out it just really isn't for you, don't brave it out & risk losing several years of your youth being miserable, just get out.

      I agree 100% mate. I managed 6 years, out of the 10 1/2 you are conned into, after joining at sixteen.
      I came out, bought a motorbike, grew my hair, and caught up on my teens, early twenties.
      Treated worse than shit by the system. Never forget the form I filled in for a social housing flat.
      One question: Have you recently left the armed forces, or come out of prison? Made me chuckle!!
      The first bike groups were formed by ex squaddies. I wonder why?

    The biggest issue I have is pretty much what you said for your 1st point. I'm a 34 year old family man and the support I'm getting from my nearest and dearest isn't ideal. Whenever the Army comes up in a discussion, it usually ends with the other half saying "do what you want". My application has been prolonged because I've had to go back to school to get the grades to join the Royal Engineers, so I've already put a lot of effort in so far just to even be considered for my preferred job role. I'm fully focussed now on getting into the military, I just hope the missus comes round sooner rather than later.

    • @AvimadyeOrunni
      @AvimadyeOrunni Před 2 lety +1

      Don’t need a video. It’s pretty simple.
      Serve for two years in the army at least unless you’re godly in soldiering and you get told you’re going.
      Do All Arms Commando Course or P company to get a taste of what it’s really like.
      Times those courses by 3x in terms of difficulty in your head to get a feel for what it’s like.
      Persuade your CO or RSM for a form to register your interest to your preferred corp and get grilled and humiliated.
      Then Visit either Sterling lines or Hamworthy.
      In your case Sterling lines For the briefing course too see whether you’re basic fitness is even suitable and then some basic hill climbs with gas masks and heavy weight etc
      If you’re selected for selection well done! 😂
      Phase 1 of training
      A constant week of timed mountain marathons (and more at the end) with up to 70ibs on your back with a FAL and 4ib more round your waist whilst navigating to meeting points with handwritten maps and memory whilst also completing pointless seemingly impossible tasks. Starting at 6am everyday and ending around late evening. Be prepared for fatigue and sleep deprivation.
      Phase 2:
      A Jungle in either Belize, Malaysia or Brunei.
      Be prepared to learn Sf tactics in terrain that make your previous terrain in Welsh mountains look like paradise. Hard routine is tested in this phase which means no talking,eating and some cases sleeping for days on end. You get one strike for error. After one you’re off the course. It’s also not uncommon for candidates to get tropical leeches and tics on their bodies including their balls and penis. Tropical disease and parasites such as Ringworm and Leechinitus are also common from drinking dirty water if you don’t purify it right which means immediate chemotherapy in some cases. SAS legend Billy Billingham had to have chemo to kill off the leeches hatching in his blood and heart. If you pass this you’re on to
      Phase 3
      Resistance to interrogation:
      Go on the run with a survival kit and a trench coat. Prepare to hallucinate and hallucinate abit more for this five days.
      Then Get “captured” by SFSG personnel and effectively tortured for 36 hours. Stress positions. Water boarding. Everything you’ll expect to get done with to break you by the real enemy. Sexual humiliation by men and women. They use to be able to drive vans at you up runways whilst you were tied to chairs but I don’t think that’s aloud anymore. Anything they can think of to damage your mind without physically hurting you they will do; they analyse you on CCTV and find your weaknesses. You can’t give anything but your cover story you were given before this started btw and when they break you and that story goes to shit then you’re only aloud to give your name rank and military number. Any show of emotion including eye movements and hand movements will result in total failure.
      So good luck. enjoy yourself and don’t die.

      @ChrisKlein0 Před 2 lety +1

      😂 worry about joining the Army first before thinking about SF. Once you’ve done a few weeks under a poncho in Brecon in January you may well decide that actually it’s not for you.

    I got a knee injury during basic, jumped off a wall on the March and shoot and felt something pop in my knee, finished the day and went to the med centre, got the standard brufen🙄🙄🙄 and just got on with things, fortunately all that was left before pass out was drill and more drill so managed to get through that and pass out by being high as a kite on painkillers. Knee went completely 3 weeks later on a BFT, more brufen and some crutches was all the ‘treatment’ I got and 26 years later I still get twinges from it.
    I was lucky others guys got binned with injuries they got earlier in basic, some got backsquadded after physio, some just got binned.
    Most people who drop out are either homesick, have family issues or just realise the army isn’t for them.
    I eventually left after 5 years for the sake of the relationship with my now wife, we just about survived me being in NI for 6 months and I was supposed to go to Bosnia almost immediately after getting back, in the end I didn’t go but she was doing Law at university and it was obvious she was never going to be an army wife working at the NAAFI so I got out.

    How long does it take to get into basic training once applied and passed medical? Does it depend on what you wanna do? I want to get into the paras next year but want to travel to USA for a few months before getting into the military but I am not sure if I should apply before I go traveling or after I come back. Very hard to time it right because I don't really wanna get into a normal job after I come back.

      Your application will go fast if you let it, if you leave everything it will go slowly. However, if you run into any problems such as injury, this can delay your application. Another thing is the medical forms, the doctor can sometimes take the piss and it can sometimes even require a phone call from the careers office to get the doctor to send them to the medical team. However you can make your application fit around your life, so if you want to travel you can just say that and you can work things out with your recruiter.

      use the Armyfit app. Take Sport in options / public services if they do it, and a language. Join Cadets (doesn't matter which one, get into the most prestigious or largest unit in the area - I'm an air cadet for example). Get into a running routine etc. If you want to go Soldier have a go at different things (like working on cars/bikes, or languages snd stuff like that so you know what you want to do as a job). If you want to be an Officer try your hand at Leadership and helping people solve disagreements.
      this advice is coming from a 15yo who's training like hell for an Army officer scholarship and was in a similar situation to you 3 years ago. Just work your arse off and you'll have an easier time at Basic :)

    Crow leaving for a girl are the worst. They want to be in the army but the girl calls them crying at night so they leave. In all the blokes I’ve seen leave the army for a girl, NONE of them are still with them.
    NEVER leave the army for anyone unless YOU truly want to leave. You will regret it unless you are 100% sure you are leaving for yourself and the right reasons.

    Think this vid is about the guys that binned it that should of and could of been great soldiers and sacked it for something silly. But the system also weeds out the ones that can't. Or haven't got it.. I agree with the words of support you are giving. Don't give in or up etc. But people pass out for a reason and people don't for a reason.

    • @JammyDodger45
      @JammyDodger45 Před 3 lety +3

      Ranger has nailed it there.
      The military has modernised it's approach to training in the last decade and is more than used to assisting recruits with dyslexia.
      Depending on how your particular dyslexia presents itself and whether there are 'coping strategies' you might never even need to mention it in your daily work.
      Good luck with whichever path you choose.

      Yeah I left school with nothing from me if you can, finish School and smash out your GCSEs. As you promote now up the ranks you need education along with the promotional course. So if you have GCSEs already that’s a lot of time saved.

      Don't overthink it Aiden, joining at 19/20 will give you a much greater level of maturity than if you join earlier.
      This will help you to cope much better with both initial training and the transition into looking after yourself, both professionally and practically (finances, health, car, housing etc). Even more importantly a couple of extra years of physical development and fitness will make training so much less difficult.
      The army offers the opportunity for a very long career, there's no need to rush into it mate.

    All I got during basic training in March year 2000, was constant put downs by NCOS ie Military police and officers. I did the Army foundation scheme 4 weeks, then CMSR 3 weeks. Constant put down for 7 weeks no praise what's so ever. Plus an ankle injury playing football after a month in training. I thought the Army would treatment like that forever even if I did the 22 years. So that's why I left then. But now after 20 years life experience I am stronger mentally than I was then. But with age physically now less fit as back then I'd trained with an ex royal marine for a year and a half when signing up back then. Just wasn't to be. 👍🏻 🙂 🇬🇧. As I am 46 now. If an NCo treated me that way now. I would physically kill him. 👊Even if I went to Colchester I would not care.
