Targeting Gurnard off the East coast Bays

  • Gotta love it when a plan comes together - fresh carrots from our carrot patch off the Bays
This time of year one of our spots off the Bays starts to full up with juicy fat Carrots, it's great to be able to target something different to the norm. Although most times when we fish it and target Carrots we still get those pesky Snapper turning up in the trail. It's not to bad getting the odd Snap when the carrots do turn up in numbers as it's normally 5 carrots to 1 Snap.
It's quite amazing how these fish have really turned up in great numbers over the pass few seasons, we use to catch the odd one or two over the years of fishing the bays but now we have a few spots that produce them very well.
With a not to bad forecast yesterday Pea and I hatched a plan to go and try pluck a few carrots for the day, it was a late start for us as we didn't launch to around half 9. We had just missed the slack tide which I do love to fish when targeting these bays carrots but we still get them through the tide - hat I've noticed is they really come on as the tide slows from either the high or low.
We arrived at our spot only using 1.5ltrs of fuel there wasn't much wind to start with so we decided to do a drift first with jigs, when targeting these Gurnard there's a couple ways we enjoy doing it. Drifting along quietly with jigs or cubes of pillies is a lot of fun, most times we like to anchor up get a burly going and bring them to us.
Jigging at anchor still works well either by dropping it straight down and do a yo yo like motion with a couple little twitches just on the bottom or cast out with a slow twitch retrieve similar to softbaiting. We got a few little hits on the jigs while drifting and Pea picked up a couple on his sabiki rig, he runs it with a little micro jig on the bottom and catches a few on either the jig or the little sabiki flies occasionally.
As the wind got up the decision was made to anchor up and drop the burly, we had caught a few little Kahawai and yellows on the sabiki so we decided to try a few baits as well. We hadn't brought any with us as it was going to be all about jigging and softbaiting for them but over the first hour or two it was pretty slow so changed it up.
With the burly going dropping our baits it didn't take long before the carrots started to turn up, although we wished we had brought some pillies to cube up they were still enjoying the cubes of fresh baits. As the tide got low and slowed they started to really come on the bite as predicted, the crazy thing was we had been fishing for a good 4-hours with not one Snapper being hooked. We were pretty stoked that we hadn't been harassed by Snapper as it was all about the Gurnard today and pretty insane we hadn't even caught a small one.
We called it a day just after 4.00 with a good dozen carrots in the bin and left them still hard on the chew
If your like me and sick of constantly catching Snapper and want to do something different the bays should get better and better for these tasty little morsels

Cheers 4DKF - yip have those tasty's now on my door step - catch them out West and other places but have really started to turn up over past few years - I always wonder why and think with all the talk on Snapper depletion maybe they have been there all along and can now get to the bait first? and some say they like to follow good water quality so maybe the bays water is getting better? Who knows but all I know it's great to have them so close to home :-)

Another good vid, Jas. Appreciate you explaining your method and techniques. All that's missing are the coordinates for the carrot patch 🤓

Cheers JL - I love just showing my little adventures and try to share what I know - don't need to much in the way of a GPS they are all along the Bays and Rangi channel etc just gotta find a couple and they'll be around that area - just gotta be on the mud and try stay away from those pesky Snappers :-) It gets easier as the Snapper thin out and the Carrots take up residence :-)

awesome catches on the gurnards. always thought that gurnards r rare in the east but after seeing this, it kinda gives hope that they'll come in huge numbers in the east. great fish to catch especially by surfcasting or landbased in general

Yes B_F we use to only catch the odd one here or there but past 3-4 seasons they have really started to come into the Bay, nice they are only few hundred meters from the ramp and I know there has been a few caught from shore. If targeted there's no problem plucking a few each season most times will get a good doz and I only fish them once or twice a season....

Yip just shows - most people when they don't catch fish think nothings around and go further afield not realizing just a 20m shift could get you onto fish - that's why I always try to suggest just do a little move a couple times. I have found the Bays to be like this that's why I have incoming and outgoing spots, fish sometimes seem to be only 10mtrs away and they just won't come off that line they follow.

I use the big 5kg salty dog ones and sometimes a couple 3kg ones depending where I'm fishing....
