Did you miss the part where they created a giant net structure to contain the balloons? Clearly they DID ask that question and actively attempted to contain the balloons to avoid that. Their attempt failed. You can criticize their attempt to contain the balloons but it is simply incorrect to act as if they all failed to even consider what would happen when releasing that many balloons. That is flat out false.

@@boianko if you have 2 or more balloons also depending on the inflated size and such will most definitely hold a person afloat, if they grabbed a few of those bad boys they could put two in each hand and it will keep them afloat and help steer as they kick there way to shore.

This was my first thought. First I'd think it's some signal that the coastguard know I'm here, but soon I'd realize it's some cruel coincidence. Itd feel like someone was celebrating my impending death.

I was a kid in the 70s and 80s and I remember balloon releases being a big thing. Schools did it as fundraisers. Students would attach notes with addresses and ask anyone that found it to write back. Even as a kid I was astonished by these blatant and obvious littering campaigns.
As a child of the 80s, I can confirm that zero fucks were given.

1970's there was a show call WKRP Cincinnati. One episode they had a turkey drop (from a helicopter) for thanksgiving. The joke was the birds don't fly and were released too high in the air and damaged the city. Fast forward a decade and someone in Ohio actually does some similar but the other way ( balloons going up) with the same results.
