We have a new contender for Australia's Best Short Hike!
The wet weather continued for another day but we weren't going to sit around waiting for it to go away.
First up in this episode we head to N'Dhala gorge and are faced with a muddy and waterlogged track. After assessing our options we decided to give it a go and had great fun crashing through the puddles. The low cloud cover across the peaks made for an incredible backdrop as we meandered our way up the valley.
The short hike at the end of the trail lead us further up into the gorge where we learned about the ancient culture from this region and discovered some of the best petroglyphs we've seen yet.
The following morning we were welcomed with blue skies and sunny conditions for the first time in days and took the opportunity to tackle the 4wd track to John Hayes rock hole.
The recent wet weather made for another fun drive in and set us up for what would be one of our favourite short hikes yet.
With plenty of snacks and supplies, we set off on the 90min (yeah right!) hike. It was a slow build-up and after being rewarded with some incredible views from the lookout we set off towards the upper gorge.
Our patience was rewarded as we descended into the gorge and were blown away by the incredible formations. A cave a little up the gorge wall made for one of the best lunch stops we've had.
Continuing on down the gorge the scenery just got better and better.

Haha that NDhala road was a bit of a worry but I did it so many times and never got stuck once. Just be brave.
I must say it doesn’t look like the rangers are doing a very good job of clearing those walking tracks. Most were lazy so that’s not a surprise.
You can keep walking beyond the end of trail mark and some good artwork further in but you have to look very carefully
The fact that you couldn’t get onto a Ranger to get info about the John Hayes Rockhole track is disappointing but not surprising really. When I was there, I lived on park and was very visible around the campgrounds, it was my job and it’s a shame that is now not the focus of Parks in general. I don’t think Rangers even live on park anymore, which in my view is a massive risk for visitors. Such a shame and you would have found out the track wasn’t that bad. I love watching people’s reactions to that place with fresh eyes. It takes me back.
That's cool to know, cheers.
