Can’t afford to mess up the easy win, better be careful with a minute left
he knew about the easy win, pretty sure he was just contemplating about the harder wins, like taking rook with the bishop instead and taking the e3 pawn with check, then taking c1 with another check. He went for the no brainer in the end, he probably just didn't want to stress too much about it

Lmao he thought it was a blunder cause he thought positionally that it was going to lose but I would've sacked only the bishop and then taken the pawn on e4. Because it would check the king then take the c2 pawn. Silly Anish. This is why the rook has more points than the bishop.
Poor giri, losing out on a perfectly good draw by winning. Thoughts and prayers going out!
Best comment!
I like how he went for the won pawn endgame trading all pieces instead of risking any shannanigans
It's known as simplification. For exactly the reason you mentioned. It is better to give up a Rook for a Bishop when you have a winning pawn structure than to deal with the possibilities of various blunders.
I think this is why he thought for a second. Bishop takes rook is probably a better move, stockfish probably rates it higher. But queen takes is much more forcing to simplification for a human
@@PattyManatty im pretty sure stockfish values queen takes higher cause it can probably see the forced checkmate already, which is probably faster this way
@@lassehoffmann625 I doubt it can calculate to mate, but if it's using an endgame book it can probably determine from that that the simplification is a winning position without having to calculate other lines

I though the same thing. It's as if his intuition was way ahead of his tactics -- he knew he won, but he still had to calculate the specific next moves.
it is both winning but forcing the queen trade makes it quicker, he just double checked if he needed the queen.
There's nothing wrong in double checking things: it prevent errors and it keeps calm and patience.

@@TheRomanianWolf should I lead you to some clips of magnus blundering?
@TheRomanianWolf no... wait maybe the world champion has never blundered or made a mistake either at this level. Please indulge me.
@@ericmoberg7679 There's really two options here : most likely your opponent does NOT blunder and destroy you ruthlessly, and you just wasted their time.
But in the outstandingly rare chance that mistake do occurs(and you didn't make it), does it prove anything? Remember that there's time increment here, and you're resigining a game where not only you are in a lost position, but also down a full minute on the clock. Black's plan is ridiculously simple : get a queen and checkmate White with no counterplay whatsoever. Stalemate? Not going to happen. This endgame has been fought countless time before and Black got a time advantage with increments.
Plus, it is considered disrespectful to NOT resign after you're in such an obviously lost position. Stockfish 16, at depth 62 even evaluated the position before c4 as M15, as in Black has forced checkmate in 16 moves.
He had to make a quick move and smack that timer because he was at 1 second. Every time he hits it I believe it adds 10 seconds to his time.

"realizes he has won", but still has to think about his move
Yeah, when you respect your opponent as a grandmaster you expect them to come to the same conclusion you have and resign the game. When they play on you have to take a second to see if maybe you missed something because it's just so strange to keep fighting when the position is completely unsalvageable even by stockfish.
@@coachmcguirk6297 "you have to take a second to see if maybe you missed something" sounds like maybe he's not so sure if he actually won, doesn't it.
Double checking is always good
@@fep_ptcp883 sounds like maybe he's not so sure if he actually won, doesn't it.
@@lLenn2 not doubting yourself even when you are 100% certain is a rookie mistake.
I'm pretty sure both of them know Anish is winning long time before this clip even starts. I'm like 1500 strength and I can tell from the initial position in like 2 seconds. Even if he just takes the exchange and plays the queen endgame, black has the first move and a check on either e2, e5 or the g file if white takes with the king, and black is up a pawn already. There is no way he doesn't win. White is obviously fucked no matter what line they even enter.
As a 1600 rated player, I too would resign if I was White. No use in fighting a hopeless match, and unlike some other people here, I'm not going to hope that my opponent blundered. I've been conditioned not to rely on my opponent making mistakes, and it had made me grow stronger. I'm sure the same sentiment is shared by many other intermediates and even to the master level.

Both sides knew what was coming. He resigned as a sign of respect, and even Anish opponent doesn't mind it, is it worth fighting a losing battle? You're not just wasting their time, you're wasting your own. Probably better to resign and start a new game. At least it wouldn't just be you shuffling the king mindlessly.

a good trick to help you calculate this after everything is traded on g3 white move is to tarde c pawns (just eliminate them from the board in your head) leaving you with pawn on b4 then you do(g-b = 7-2=5) and 4

I am still thinking that who offered the draw, or if it was resignation, then who resigned among them
Resignation, white is DEAD LOST....
After the simplification there's no way the white king can stop Black from queening. So it's hopeless for white.
I never resign I would rather go till I get checkmated, stalemated, there is Insufficient material to force a checkmate, the curtain 50 moves to a draw happens, the threefold repetition draw happens, or timeout
