This movie made me want to run away from my home, grab a random instrument and embark on the most magical fantasical adventure in my entire lifetime and i still want to do that
I feel so dumb, I saw this on a plane on my way back from Europe, and I didn't think to actually watch it just because it was lumped up with all the other kids movies. I was a fool. Its so beautiful and I cried several times. 😭😭😭
I first saw this on a plane as a kid too, it was surreal. I still hum the tunes sometimes and wasn’t sure where it was from. My child brain absorbed it tho it was truly woven into my consciousness.
I saw it at my uncles, he used to make me watch the most randomest movies at times and I normally wouldn’t want to watch them since I was picky but would end up loving them and they’d shape my entire childhood
@@mentacose She left because since she’s a selkie, they must return to the ocean in order to birth their children. And since all of the fairies were leaving when they were finally saved, that meant the mother had to go with them.
I love how the supernatural beings (like the owl-witch and McLear ) mirror the characters of Ben's family like his father and his grandma. This whole thing is about the possessing of grief and that "bottled up" emotions and trauma would never heal without acknowledgeing and prossessing it. Turning to stone and therefore getting rid of all feelings good and bad is not the answer. Overall there is so much symbolism in this. The spirits and selkie-mother going into the light shows the letting-go of the past and grief as well as the "passing over" of persons lost in one's life. So even if all of the supernatural folklore-stuff would turn out to just being ben's head, it would still make a lot of sense. A kid coming to terms with his mom's death, the resentment for his sister, the grief of his father and well-meant but strickt attempt of his grandma to break the cicle. All wrapped up in the stories his mom once told him. Serious themes expressed to the fantastical imagination of a child. Really loved this movie. The animation is fantastic❤. A pure work of art and a modern take on Gaelic folklore.
I noticed that as well, and how they're parallels look like each other. With the grandma looking like the owl lady, father as the stone giant, the old man, and even Seraph looking like a mini version of her mother
My film teacher says animated films aren't serious enough to watch in class and we have to watch "real movies"... mans clearly never watched this masterpiece.
These sorts of teachers really get on my nerves. It’s always people who don’t actually watch animated movies who judge them like this. Their opinions are based on first impressions rather than any ACTUAL knowledge about animation. Yes, it’s true that most animated movies are comedies for children. But a lot of people make the mistake of viewing animation as a genre, when really it’s not. Animation isn’t “cartoons for kids”. It’s an entire artistic medium that combines drawing and painting (and sometimes even other art forms like sculpture, puppetry, collage, digital art, etc.) with film. An animated movie can be any genre, because the medium is versatile. Animation allows filmmakers to be creative and imaginative, and do things in their movies that live action cannot. In fact, most “live action” films actually include some animation in them, in the form of CGI. Not to mention the fact that in the modern day, there are TONS of animated movies/shows for adults. And furthermore, even most of the animated films that are for kids, are actually made for families, and the knowledge that parents or older children will be watching them too is something that gets taken into consideration. And so, writers put a lot of effort into ensuring that their stories are good and they still include adult themes. Song of the Sea is a great example of one of these movies. It’s made for kids, but obviously it’s not JUST for kids, because it includes a lot of adult themes about overcoming grief and depression and trauma. My mom and I both cried while watching it together, and I’m 25 and she’s 56. Maybe I’m making some bold claims here, but personally I don’t think you can call yourself a true film lover if you don’t see the value in animation. Even if you prefer live action, it’s not fair to judge an entire art form based on a small handful of films for children. You need to REALLY view animation before you form your opinion. Watch more obscure films. Watch short films. Seek out adult animation, and I don’t just mean Family Guy. I mean things like Primal, Arcane, and Princess Mononoke. Or even more obscure adult animation like The House, Unicorn Wars, and Anamolisa. I’d recommend Love, Death, and Robots to anyone who wants a large range of different adult animated short films. Animation is so many different things. And it should be appreciated for the art form it is rather than just based on one type of film. Sometimes there’s no convincing people, but I’d recommend giving your teacher more animated movies/shows to watch. I think he’s bound to like one of them.
It really is! I feel like he really started caring when she got sick and they were in the temple. He was genuinely nice and brotherly towards her from that moment on.
I feel like this movie was made for me. I have a little brother who has lighter hair and loves dogs and a littler sister who has dark hair and eyes and is nonverbal. It always means a lot to see nonverbal characters represented, and she looks just like my sister! So much love to all the creators.
I felt very bad for Ben at the start,he was just like a "forgotten child" to his own dad, that's why he was so stubborn and unpolite with his sister, btw the best and the saddes scene (for me) was when Ben remember the night where the mom disappear and her little sister born (this is a masterpiece)
That’s my thoughts the whole movie! I feel so bad for Ben just being pushed aside because he’s not “special” I feel like he deserves to be the main and the one to play the shell and it was his in the first place his sister just took it and was passed off as the “special “ one he deserves so much better
I think he sees her as the reason his mom disappeared because kids do sometimes have a hard time understanding complex issues like that. The two things are connected for him which I think stems a lot of the resentment as well
I understand maka is trying to do. To her, she thought she was helping her son and others to never feel pain. But feeling sad is always not a bad thing. Sometimes it can be a good thing too. This film is such a masterpiece.
I love how they used the bottles to symbolize trapping emotions and characters turning into stones when they've lost all their emotions and spirit which truly happens when one becomes numb.

That must suck to have a grandma who looks and acts like Macca the Owl Lady. I can relate. When I was 5, I noticed that my grandmother's voice sounded a lot like Kaa the python from The Jungle Book, so much so I thought Kaa ate my widowed grandmother and disguised as her like the Wolf in Little Red Riding Hood, so I wouldn't make eye contact with her alone, because I feared being hypnotized and devoured. What's funny was that not only did she sound like Sterling Holloway, she even looked like him in his old age and I did not know that until I was in my 20's. It's almost like I wasn't too far off base. On that note, I do like how this movie takes a deliberate page from J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan in terms of characters from the story-within-a-story paralleling familiar characters in the story proper.
The imagery with Ben's father resembling Mac Lir was amazing, and same with the grandmother and Macha. I love this movie so much I can't even explain it
So Connor (the dad) and his mom (granny) are like Macha and Mac Lir. The design are the same, Macha and granny are the same voice actress for both characters, the personalities, behavior, Mac Lir and Connor has same voice actor, and I just realize Ferry Dan looks like Seanchaí and behave like him.
I’m going to Ireland this summer. Once I get there, I’m definitely grabbing my violin and preparing my singing voice so I can embark on an alluring, fantastical journey. That’s been my dream, and I want to do that every day.
I’m crying while writing this. This was a beautiful movie. I remember watching it when I was young, I cried. I promised myself I wouldn’t cry again the next time I watch this but I ended up crying my eyes out LOL. Over all, it’s a gorgeous and emotional movie. It will always be one of my favourites

In Gaelic he is named ''Cù'' and in French ''Joe'' (it is a Irish-French-Belgian production), but ''cù'' means ''dog'' in Gaelic (in French they missed the point ':-D )...
This movie is a definite masterpiece overlooked by many. Watching it as a child once and watching it back years later, it brings a tear to my eyes knowing that it exists. The one thing that really stuck to me after an absence from watching this film was the music and I’ll never forget how much a few songs reminded me of the score that accompanied this movie. All in all, I love this movie 🥰
I don’t think I can describe how much I cry to this movie. Whether it’s happy, whether it was sad or when it’s cause of how much I love this movie and how I feel to each character. Being the boy as someone who hated my own sibling, it always makes me smile to see how he grows to be by his sister and be in his shoes for the whole movie. I love my sibling, even when I have a small outburst or do something I can’t take back, I try to do what best I can and hope to let them know I love them very much.
HOLY SHIT the CZcams algorithm has blessed me!!! I used to watch this movie all the time in 2015-2016 but I lost it AAAAA And this video was uploaded a day after my birthday AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
After so long ive finally found it!! This was a big part of my childhood and the singing made me feel calm still to this day whenever i feel so anxious and stuff i sing this song to help. ❤😊😊
This is one of the rare childrens' films that I enjoy more as an adult than as a child. There's something about its perspectives on grief, lashing out in pain, forgiveness, and properly dealing with pain that seems much more carefully considered than most other movies I've seen. I dunno if that's just a part of the director's vision, Irish media in general, or maybe something else entirely, but it's wonderful.
This part at 33:56 is one of my favorite scenes in literally any movie. I love how when Saoirse joins in the song with her mothers shell flute, Lug, Mossy & Spud become more in sync with each other's playing.
Absolutely adore this movie and everything else cartoon saloon puts out, amazing to have it on YT but reminder to everyone who can to pls support this studio!

The. Best❤ (also lol did anyone notice Aisling in the bus and croms eye in wolfwalkers? XD i love the refs!)
11:46 wow, I love this score which plays the second half of "Sadness" one of my favourites because it kinda reminds of folk instruments I used to listen to on TV when I was a little kid, sunsets of being in a countryside, peacefully putting a child in bed or listening to the waters in a beach, valley, forest and farm.
Just remembered the song celkie song I am from Nova Scotia this movie is bring back memories good and bad out of 15 children I always felt left out and I didn’t really talk I new how but I choose not not to cause I was allayed blame for everything so I ran away at 13 after my last bad thing that happened. But years later I am great
I remember randomly finding this movie as a young kid and watching it. I also remember being very confused when watching it. I never found that movie again but here it is.
This has been my favorite movie for years, and I really relate to Ben and Siersha now because I too have lost my mom and this time watching this movie again hit me right in the heart and made me shed a few tears. This movie is truly a masterpiece.
I cried as kid and then I'm old now I cried again because this movie made me Crying over over over over again. and then I realized they lost Theirs Mother just like us. because cause of blood. To birth in our Sibling. Our Father tried to be Best Father to take care of us. now I wanted to Rewatched again.
The memories are remains the same as I remember, I love every part of the roller coaster emotions in this movie, I'm glad that I grew up with this story
This movie made me want to run away from my home, grab a random instrument and embark on the most magical fantasical adventure in my entire lifetime and i still want to do that

I was just scrolling through my feed and saw this and spat out my ramen! Thank you!
Enjoy
The imagery with Ben's father resembling Mac Lir was amazing, and same with the grandmother and Macha. I love this movie so much I can't even explain it
So Connor (the dad) and his mom (granny) are like Macha and Mac Lir. The design are the same, Macha and granny are the same voice actress for both characters, the personalities, behavior, Mac Lir and Connor has same voice actor, and I just realize Ferry Dan looks like Seanchaí and behave like him.
This movie has been my favorite ever since I was a little girl. 10 years later and nothing has changed🫶
I am SOBBING. Snot everywhere! Shirt is soaked with tears! I love this movie!
I’m going to Ireland this summer. Once I get there, I’m definitely grabbing my violin and preparing my singing voice so I can embark on an alluring, fantastical journey. That’s been my dream, and I want to do that every day.
Ahh lovely
I'm Irish born and bred living there 🥰🥰
Best country ever🇮🇪💋♥️
i remember being 7 years old and getting this cd from the library. I don’t remember much i will rewatch this soon.
Tysm!! I’ve been trying to find this so long ! I watched it as a kid and it’s beautiful !
same, and I agree it's beautiful
I agree
You're welcome!
SAAAME 😭
I love this movie, the song was always mine and my brother’s favourite ❤️
I’m crying while writing this. This was a beautiful movie. I remember watching it when I was young, I cried. I promised myself I wouldn’t cry again the next time I watch this but I ended up crying my eyes out LOL. Over all, it’s a gorgeous and emotional movie. It will always be one of my favourites
I can't remember the last time I cried so much because of a movie. It's so beautiful.
Wanna cry so much because of a game?
@@EssieBell-xu4ytthis isn’t a game? It’s a movie called song of the sea where have u been?
@@mochifrog8141 Sorry if I confused you but, I wanted to start a conversation about a video that gives off the same vibe of song of the sea. Sorry if I confused you.
@@EssieBell-xu4yt ohh nah ur good I just didn’t understand lmao
This movie made me cry fr✨ I love this movie 👍 masterpiece ✨
“Your going to be the best big brother in the world” also Ben: *proceeds to put a leash on her*
My online friend passed away in 2022, and this was her favorite movie. Now every time I watch it, it reminds me of her :)
She will be watching you so sorry for your loss I no what that’s like to lose someone that always gets you😢
i used to watch this on Netflix as a kid and when they banned it a few years ago i was devastated, finding it was here the whole time made me happy
saoirse is one of my favourite characters she's so cute
this movie is my roman empire.
I watched this movie when I was little and fell in love with it. Now as a teenager I'm still in love with it, this is beautiful
I love that the dog is literally just named dog
There's even a trope called like that: "a dog named dog"
In Gaelic he is named ''Cù'' and in French ''Joe'' (it is a Irish-French-Belgian production), but ''cù'' means ''dog'' in Gaelic (in French they missed the point ':-D )...
I’m not crying you are😭
That was so cute and so sad and good at the same time 😢😢😢❤❤😢❤😢 I cried while watching this
As a Scottish person, I suddenly feel rather honoured to live next to such a beautiful, magical country. Aka, Ireland.
I remember my teacher showing this to us back in 1-3rd grade, all of us were obsessed!
This is literally one of the best movies in existence and I’m glad I could watch it again.
I love my sibling, even when I have a small outburst or do something I can’t take back, I try to do what best I can and hope to let them know I love them very much.
this is one of the most beautiful and fascinating movies ive ever seen.... along with wolf walkers
Check out secret of Kells! It's the same studio
@@PrincessX-ke8tj actually i watched that movie before i watched song of the sea and i didnt like it that much unfortunately 😭

After so long ive finally found it!! This was a big part of my childhood and the singing made me feel calm still to this day whenever i feel so anxious and stuff i sing this song to help. ❤😊😊

I thought it was madra?
This is one of my favorite animated movies, of all time. Thank you!
omfg tyyyyy we watched this in mythology class last week but i was absent and i need to turn in a viewing guide 😭🙏💞
Частенько пересматриваю мультфильм, он волшебный😊
i love this movie more than life itself, its so beutiful and the music feels otherworldly in a way its like its a world you could totally get lost in!
The intro was so beautiful i didnt skip it unlike other movies ive watched❤
Well I just cried for about the last 40 straight minutes, thank you.
Just kind of stumbled on this and it was absolutely beautiful.
I remember seeing this when i was younger I'm so happy to see it for free on youtube, more people get to see this masterpiece 😭
This is my childhood movie I’ve been looking for it EVERYWHERE! And I found it!! ❤❤❤
This film is Irish out of 10 would watch it again.
Absolutely adore this movie and everything else cartoon saloon puts out, amazing to have it on YT but reminder to everyone who can to pls support this studio!
the amount of tears...that spewed out my eyeballs..it made me realize family is everything i cant imagine a world without my mother
Im so glade cartoon saloon even exists, they inspire me a lot to draw more and cuz of them now i wanna know more about irish culter and folklores, currently learning irish rn atm and its so fun! :D every movie they make is filled with so much passion for it and you can always tell in every single frame and movment of it even the sound effects and music, it inspires me so much and i think more plp should know about them, their incredible at everything and defo way better then disney/ and pay the animators more money which is better :3 their. The. Best❤ (also lol did anyone notice Aisling in the bus and croms eye in wolfwalkers? XD i love the refs!)
Irish is really hard, but I’m glad you’re learning it!
This movie made me almost cry, and the way she laughed 😂❤ *dog pushes her* “HehEHEhe” 😂❤ her laugh was so CUTE!!
But years later I am great
This is my childhood
For real it's mine too
omg same 😭

At last i found this film, it literally made me cry and i never stop thinking about it. I literally had a dream where i was Siesha (i cant spell it)-

@@StarlokenDw, that’s js Irish names, lol. My name is Siobhan (Shivon) and a lot of people can’t spell it 😂
I remember randomly finding this movie as a young kid and watching it.
