This car is incredible. Built like a tank. So quiet even at such high speeds. Probably one of the last over engineered Merc.

@@BS-lq8gm I owned 98’ CL500 for 10 years, and believe me or not, but you are wrong.
Besides hydraulic suspension, where repairs might be a bit expensive (but not so much), the car is really trouble free.
What determines the condition of any 24 year old car: country of manufacturing = 0%, how much money and time owner spent on maintaining the good condition: 100%. Throughout the world there are a lot of 24 year old Mercedes which look like crap and 24 year old Rovers or Citroens which look brand new.
Hehe maybe OP hasn't heard of the quality crisis of Mercedes after 2000. This C140 era was the last of the overengineered Mercs.

The car is heavy but with a huge V8 and a lot of Nm for speed. I think is a great classic car and perfect on the Autobahn.

Even though its old remember back then these were Top of the Line. Lot of older Mercedes lasts longer then new ones. Nice vid. 😊
These were junk at the time too. Plagued with electrical gremlins, too heavy, underwheeled, handled like a pig etc. It seems people are looking back with rose tinted spectacles with this S class coupe and indeed with the 140 series S class. Even with a V12 400hp engine it was barely quicker than the 560 SEL W126 that came before it. It was a complete disaster sales wise for Mercedes, and best consigned to the history books.
@@davecom3 Yea, those biodegradable wiring harnesses were a nightmare. Thankfully, most of them have been changed by now though. Idk how one of these would've lasted until now with an original harness. Then again, even with the harnesses replaced you still have to worry about the REST of the electronics and wiring in the car. For instance, those heated seats with vacuum controlled adjustments for lumbar support, etc..? The vacuum lines will literally fall apart in your hands if you touch them they feel like they are made of hard wax. The electronic wiring is flimsy too. The seat problems extend to ALL Mercedes-Benzes though..

Till this day there are few cars that are as comfortable as the C or W140 type. I love my W140 and it is a joy to do long distance travel in it. Doing regular trips from Lithuania to the Netherlands. Having Germany in the middle only adds to the joy :)

I can't think of another piece of engineering unit that was built 20+ years ago and still is leaps above 80% current generation tech and engineering! This car might be the only true master piece outta that Era that survived and still could put 80% of manufacturers to shame!! I also feel like they still use to technology or RND off this car today!

Ein Monument von Fahrzeug. Ich fahre schon seit längerer Zeit einen 2005er Fiesta. Wenn ich dann aber mal, wie letztens, einen 2000er E280 Automatik W210 gefahren bin, ist das schon ein kleines Erlebnis vom Fahrgefühl her....

My s500 w140 98’ have 320hp and top speed 260+ kmh. & have mileage 70,000 kilometers. I love this car, but I drive 2 times a year. 🥇💪

3:45 You can see and hear the limit of this car getting reached. Start it @3:37. A true 'supercar' could have not only safely held 200kph+ (~125mph), but it would have been accelerating through the corner, not panic braking/slowing down to 188kph (~117mph) .... like homie did in the clip--because the limit of the cars grip was clearly edged on every time you heard those tires (all 4) screeching. Terrifying feeling.

I've got same model 1997 CL420 but unfortunately after 70000miles engine ECU has gone and no-one can remap repair or fix it and I absolutely love this car and prefer them to new mercs
So totally broken hearted here in UK

My first car was a w140 s600 v12 coupe. The electrics fell apart so fast I had to get rid of it.
I've got same problem with my CL420 with 70000 miles and ECU gone on it and no-one can fix it
