- See legendary composer of much of the Odissi repertoire music, violinist Pt Bhubaneswar playing a full intro alap before Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra on mardala/pakhawaj and senior vocalist Rakhal Mohanty join in with Ratikant Mohapatra on Manjiras. Sharon Lowen performs this invocation at the NYC Metropolitan Museum as the 22nd concert of her Festival of India USa tour 1985-6.
Manikya Veena Mangalacharan opens with invocations to Lord Jagganath (jagannatha Swami), Mother Earth and the Goddess of Learning and Music, Saraswati, in her form as Matanga playing a bejeweled Veena, four armed, the crescent moon in her hair, lotus eyed, radiating benevolence, bearing weapons, with the graceful gait of the elephant followed by the Trikandi Pranam to God, Guru, and Audience.

i agree, and i am fortunate to have recordings of Rakhal-da vocal, Bhubaneswar Misra-ji, Kelubabu and Shibu. We are also fortunate that Shibu and family are carrying Odissi forward.
are you sure you're not Indian? You look and move like one ha! ha! Really beautiful, thank you :)
I see so many foreign people dancing odissi in stage program.small group of people kill this dance form and mam i salute you what a flow of movements i like it so much . Make expression work HARD...... And make your day
Thank you. my guru, the great Padma Vibushan Kelucharan Mohapatra had full confidence that the art is so great that it would not be killed by lesser presentations as the cream will always rise to the top, so generously teaching all who wished to learn was best for the art

The ministrations were so beautifully delicate! The poses, where you stopped, were just so picturesque. Also ma'am, do you know what the raga of this composition is?
there are 4 ragas.Malkaus, Bagashri, Mishra Kamaj and Durga,
which equals ragamalika
@@SharonLowen1 oh okayy. Thank you so much ma'am
Beautiful performance Ms Lowen. I have a question though. There is a small Nrtta portion after the sloka but before the Sabha pranam. I think it adds a unique charm to this mangalacharan, but it is not performed nowadays. Do you know why it isn't performed in Manikya Veena any more? Also, do you know why this was added to this item? What influenced Guruji to include this? Are there other Mangalacharans with a similar Nrtta part? Why don't other Mangalacharans have these short Nrtta portions?
I greatly appreciate any insight ma'am.
a good question. This small nritta portion is also part of the Pade Vande Mangalacharan choreography. If other dancers no longer include this in these two mangalacharans it is because today every performance is required to be as short as possible or because their teacher didn't include it in the teaching process for their own reasons. During most of my career, performances were 2 1/2 hours with one 15 min inermission for costume change, now many choreographies are abridged. Namami vignarajan is the first and shortest mangalacharan so it was natural not have beginning dancers learn a longer Sabha pranam.
@@SharonLowen1 thank you so much for the insight, I really appreciate it.
Mam, do you also know kuchipudi?
K. Viswanath had asked me to learn a bit of Kuchipudi to perform in Swarna Kamalam
but I am trained in Odissi and he allowed me to present that for the first time in a Telegu film as I was playing myself to inspire the heroine.
@@SharonLowen1 yes I saw the film and I am learning kuchipudi now,I am 32 now and I wish I had learned it earlier
@@sasid6774 I have many students of your age who love dance and it is the right now is always the right age to dance
