  • You won't get very far without a well-functioning chain. So from time to time you may decide to remove it because:
    - you want to clean it. A dirty chain makes the transmission wear quicker.
    - you need to replace it. If the chain is too worn it will slip on the cogs.
    - it broke while cycling.
    - it's rusty and chain links are stiff. If the chain links are stiff the chain will not move properly.
Whatever the reason, watch our brand spanking new CZcams video on how to remove a bike chain.

Hardest part for me is threading the new chain back through the derailleur correctly. I always leave the last little bit of the rivet in otherwise I can never get it back in!

It's really useful if you've got another bike to look at. Or take a picture while the chain is on the bike? You should leave the rivet in the outer plate if you want to rejoin the chain with the rivet, but modern chains are designed to be rejoined with a joining link. I don't think the chain police will be on duty to spot you reriveting but it could fail. If you look at the most recent Park chain riveting tool it doesn't have teeth to open out the stiff link that inevitably occurs with reriveting which indicates to me you should always use a master link.

@@cyclemaintenanceacademy so the chain has now been off for 3 months ;-) Can you add the link to the 'how to put it back' video, please?

Aha - you have 'how to repair a broken chain'... so I can just use that, but skip the part about removing the broken link and fitting the master link... just start with feeding the chain and then joining the master link again?

@@colinmcculloch8967 yes, it's been a long time. I actually have a good news, we have a video published on how to put the chain back on the bike disguised under the title "How to fix a broken bike chain". There's the link: czcams.com/video/S_CnUWA7pWQ/video.html (from at 1min 50sec). Hope this helps:)
