Why It's Always Sunny Is The Most ABSURDLY Brilliant Show On Television

  • Many fans of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia have their idea of a perfect episode, and that's what makes It's Always Sunny so great. You ask 20 different fans, you'll get 20 different answers. But this episode in-particular is truly the best mix of the show's emotional and technical abilities. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia continues to push the envelope season after season, but this episode stands out above the rest. Especially when you have Charlie Kelly, played by Charlie Day, in the drivers seat.

I honestly do not understand how Rob, Glenn, Charlie and everyone else do it. This show has been on for 15+ years. It started in 2005 and it's still relevant! And not only is it just as good as it's always been, many times it actually gets better. How many shows can you name that have even managed to last this long? Let alone not dip in quality, let alone stay good, LET ALONE get better!? It's truly mindblowing. And the fact they they write AND star in it is just..they are so talented it's unreal.

@@dereklewis4321 Yea, I would agree with that. Having to pack 22 episodes into a season is too much for anyone. It's incredibly hard to keep quality up like that. I think that's why not a lot of shows these days have that many episodes per season. 10-13 is way more common now. And I think we've had more super high quality shows in the last 10 years or so than ever before, so that really says something.

I love the whole... “thank you Tang See my dear, dear friend. A simple pill... ingested by a man... who received an idea, a simple thought, so clear and sharp, it cut through his mind like a soft cheese and led him to... an INVENTION!” scene. The whole episode is amazing but that scene is hilariously spot on acting by Charlie.

I’ve loved this show for so long, and the way it has stayed in peoples’ minds as the “oh yeah I think I’ve heard of that show” show is wild. It’s popular but still underrated. It’s like a little above underground enough to just be a mainstay in peoples’ subconscious, and then when you watch the show you cannot believe you’ve missed out on this all these years. I don’t know any other shows in spots like that

It really is almost impossible to pick a perfect episode but The Gang Gets Analyzed, The Gangs Hits the Jersey Shore, Nightman Cometh, The Gang Goes To Hell, The Gang Goes to a Water Park, Sweet Dee Has a Heart Attack, The Gang Gets Held Hostage, Dee and Dennis Go on Welfare, etc are all great character based episodes where we see exactly how depraved and selfish they really are. Especially the Gang Gets Analyzed. That was the first episode I ever watched and really paid attention to and I fell in love with how bat shit insane they all are.

Personally, I put classic Sunny (seasons 1 through 7) leagues ahead of more recent seasons but the show's quality is remarkably consistent

  • @judeannethecandorchannel2153

Great Erudition (comparisons to Alfonso Curan, a one shot scene in Children of Men I didn't even notice, etc.).
Great recipe for great art: Get More creative over time, not tired or staid or timid. And exactly correct artists do that When They Care. That's inspiring.
Somehow you turned an analysis of a sleaze bag comedy about truly terrible people (though Frank and Charlie can be endearing... But they're still *really terrible*) you turned an analysis of an absurd comedy about reprehensible people into something rather inspiring.
I think about the creator (Mac) and the rest of the cast and their dedication. That's beautiful. I love it. Great work Nerdstalgic.

The theory is that the characters of the show represent a sort of shadow archetype.
They are what some people would be if they did away with those pesky things like self respect, empathy and actually challenging their ego instead of indulging their ego.
In other words, even in absurdity: the characters are still absurdly human.

This episode definitely takes some ideas from P.T. Anderson's film Punch Drunk Love.
The frequent flyer milage, the anxiety induced scenes with the music and Charlie rushing around and when he stops to slam the stool.
