- Phase Two of Cichlid Bros continues today with Troy's basement aquariums. In this video, he aquascapes the new 90 gallon aquarium!
This new aquascape will be for a discus tank setup. I went with sand, driftwood, rocks, and plenty of live plants.

Nicely done looks great can't wait to see the fish
Freakin sick bro! The discus are going to look amazing in there.

Discus. That’s an amazing plan, Troy. So excited for unboxing day!!
Thanks! Coming very soon!
I've been waiting on some Cichlid Bros content and I literally cheered when about the same time your video did when I found out you're gonna do discus. That was my choice. Yayyyyyyyyyyyy!
You’re amazing! Beautiful job, no surprise..as always love love your vids!
Thanks, Jerry! Appreciate it!
I’ve been waiting for someone to do a discus tank and your the one who did it! I’m planning on a discus tank in the future. Great video, thanks!
Awesome. Thanks for watching!
Your welcome and thanks for the video!
That’s a great way to soak wood. I put an old aqua clear 110 filter with a piece of foam and a fine pad or floss to remove tannins. If the wood is really dark you can put carbon or Seachem purigen to help catch the tannins
Great job man!
Thanks!
Pard me but I’m zoned out if I see Troy..😊
As you probably know I have got 600 l aquarium with Discus. I have German bred Discus because I have harder water. Never had bigger problemu with them. The reason why? I just keep them in warm water about 30 and without any other species. No issue with my Discus fish. And bare bottom. They are heavy eaters:)
❤️❤️❤️😍😍👏👏👏Wooow is a very nice
Thank you!
I’m excited to see this come together! If you want those Java fern to thrive, definitely use some fertilizer! They don’t need a lot. I Skip all-in-one products, with dry mix ferts i had much better results, much cheaper, plus it gives you the ability to control nutrient ratios 👍
Looks great 👍 Loved how it looks after plant and rock 🪨 integration! 👏
Thank you! Cheers!
Great tank, i would recommend to add some shadow zones in the tank for the discus, as they are pretty shy with strong lights
Thanks! I’ll also be dimming the lights some
Can’t wait. Eagerly anticipating. I love discus but man are they a lot of hard work. I ended up giving mine to a friend. Couldn’t get them to eat and I didn’t want them to expire. I know this tank is about to be off the hook
Troy,
That 90 gal aquarium looks amazing. That aquascape looks so good buddy. How many Discus can you keep in a 90 gal aquarium? I am in the process of setting up a 55 gal Angel and Tetra tank. I just scaped it with some left over rocks that I had from my 90 gal. I went with a black sandy/ small gravel substrate. It sparkles a bit in the light. I added in some rocks that had a little red in them and it really pops with the substrate. I am going to add live plants also because they help in filtration also. I can't wait to keep angels I have never had them or a tank big enough for them. How many Angels can I keep in a 55 gal with schools of Tetras? I have 2 black skirted tetras in there now and I am going to add 4 more to make a school. I am also going to add Buenos Aires tetras a school of 6? and 4 angels? is that to many? or could I add more Angels or more tetras? I am not looking at over stocking like my 90 gal Africans cichlid tank.
Looks so good, and you will need lot of patience for the plants to grow. You could also try adding Limnophila sessiliflora, they grow super crazy & looks good. I think adding neon tetras or rummy nose will look beatutiful, especially rummy nose since they are the best schooling fish. You will need hundreds of em, it would look spectacular.
Have 90 gallon Tiger Barb 28 total one pelco cat. rock & driftwood & few silk plants .dark blue background & blue led lighting ...3 yrs now setup ..
...Jameson Lee Taillon will not stop the Cubs from sucking! 😂😜😅
Dansby Swanson though…
Did you say "more sticky" ? 😆 🤣 😂
Love it...your aquscaping skills are just fine 👍
Thank you, appreciate it!
That looks great man !!!
Thank you!
Can, you guys please do a video on the best 35 to 75-gallon tanks and stands with prices, because I have been finding it really hard to find the perfect tank to buy budget it 350 to 500. AUD
try to stick with one type of a discus strain than a hodgepodge of colors, it will look better in long term.
Excited to see this! Are you planning on doing RO water or trying out some hard water discus?
Update coming soon! Not doing RO for this setup
Another great video as always! I’m currently looking to get a 75 gallon tank for my central american cichlids and have been having an extremely difficult time choosing what type of filtration to run with. I’ve considered the same thing you are doing on this tank which is a HOB along with a smaller canister filter, but I can also get a Fluval FX4 for about the same price as the other option. I like the idea of having two types of filters in case something goes wrong, but I know the single FX4 will be more than enough on its own as long as there’s no issues and I keep up on maintenance.
Thanks! The more filtration the better 👍🏻
The LFS in Elgin is fantastic. Wondering why you didn’t buy the sand there? In my experience, the large store in Hoffman has terrible service. Looking to do a similar set up of my own soon.
This guy has to be tall!!!
very nice tank !!! I love plants tanks :)
Thank you!
I can't wait next large tank in room 😃
Coming soon!
🐿️
Looks great. I noticed you went with the SuperNaturals Jungle River sand..I am considering it for my large Geo Sveni. Does it seem fine grain enough for geos?
Hey Troy...I caught that you went with the JC&P light for this tank. I am seriously considering one and was wondering what it is about them that has you choosing it over others.
The aquascape looks great. What type of discus did you end up ordering?
Thank you! Will be revealing that in the next video 👍🏻
Where are you getting discus. Simply Discus web has great suggestions for great quality. I had to finally add weights to my manzita wood. Getting ready to add 15 or so 5 inch discus ( 180 G ) custom Aquarium. Good luck.
What size lights do you use for your 180 and 150 gallon tanks
Nice setup! I just put the super naturals in my 55g but I rinsed it first..Looks like your sand was just fine without rinsing it ?
Thanks! Yep this type was
I have a 250 gallon tank, can I by on own fish? The company that maintains my tank fish are a little to hi for me
How do you go about calculating the amount of sand per pound that you have in your tanks?
Discus are great and are easy to keep it you follow these rules. You need to keep the water 85 degrees for them to thrive. Discus will live at 80 degrees but will not thrive. Also get ready for endless large water changes (at least 80% each week). Purchase your fish from one of the reputable dealers online not a local pet store. The online guys import the best quality and healthy fish. Buy larger fish to begin (5 inches or larger). Good luck, your brothers are going to be jealous.
Is it good enough without substrate in the tank?
It's probably the wrong time to tell you this, but it is also the perfect time to tell you that Java Fern requires CO2 in hard water, whereas discus don't tolerate CO2 very well.
You mentioned a few times in your past videos that you have hard water with a pH of 8 and above; at those parameters your Java Fern will eventually just wither away after getting infested with algae. The warmer temperature will only accelerate the process.
Instead I will recommend for you the various Echinodorus species (Aquartica, Bleherae, Red Diamond, Reni, Tricolor, etc), but you will need a soil substrate for those.
You can also have the various water lilies such as Barclaya, Nymphea and Nymphoides, but they need a ton of liquid ferts.
I would also recommend for you Vallisneria and Sagittaria.
My java fern has done well in other tanks, so should be fine.
@@CichlidBros that's good to know then. I guess every water is different even if the pH is the same.
@@abdurrahmansiddique171 appreciate the tips. I’ll keep an eye on it and share progress on the channel as usual 👍🏻
@@CichlidBros look forward to the updates mate, I am a regular viewer of your channel.
Awesome setup! I thought in a previous video you mentioned you have hard water with a high ph. Do you have plans for using RO water or just going with your tap water?
Thank you! Will likely keep tap and buy tank bred
Have you done a GH/kH test before? I’d imagine you have similar water to Primetime aquatics as you guys live pretty close and he has fairly hard water. I’ve wanted to get discus but I fear my 8.2ph 17°kH 16°GH is too hard. Would love to know how yours compares :)
Where did you get your plants from?
setting up something similar with a 90 gallon as well. Did you do anything special with the hardscape you bought? or just rinsing from store and into tank?
Just rinsing lightly. Update video on this tank coming later today actually!
Hi, a have a 20gallon and in there is 5 shrimp and 15 copper tetras. I would like to add one more fish as a center piece fish. Any ideas?
Is there a specific paint used for the aquarium background, or will any do?
Most will do just fine. I used krylon latex acrylic black
Fkkkk yeahhhhhhhhh
Do you remember which CaribSea substrate you used for this tank? Thanks!
Yep, jungle river
You getting your Discus from Hans Discus? I like them because they are bread and raised in normal tap water, can with stand higher PH .
I've considered! There are a few good options that I'm looking into
What brand tank is this?
Love the aquascape! Want to recreate the setup. What type of stones and driftwood did you use specifically? What Caribsea bag did you use? Thank you!
Edit: How much sand did you use for the 90 gallon aquarium?
Thanks! I used seiryu stone and spiderwood. For the sand, it is Jungle River sand, and I used 60 pounds of it
I've seen mixed reviews about this sand. Do you recommend washing it before adding to the tank?
I’ve like it so far. Didn’t need to wash it
@@CichlidBros Thanks.
What are the dimensions of this tank plz?
Is 60lbs minimum you’d do for a 90 gallon?
Yeah. I actually added 20 more pounds later on
What are the dimensions of this beautiful tank?
48″ x 18″ x 24″
tank dimensions?please
82-84°F rite
Total cost of rocks and wood PLEASE?
I think around $200
@@CichlidBros Not bad! thanks, tank looks awesome
Would you use that sand in your cichlid tanks?
Definitely. I really like this type
@@CichlidBros how do calculate how much substrate you're going to need for the size tank you get?
I kept discus for many years and might b better to keep plants in pots and bare bottom, just talking from experience and discus are so sensitive. I used to do 75 percent water changes every other day and it just became a job wasn't fun. Hopefully your experience is better they are the king of freshwater fish
Discus over red devil ?? Why ??? There so boring
Your next tank should be a biotope. No more mixing and matching fish and plants from all over the world. Challenge yourself. Tank looks good though considering.
Now we’re complaining about mixing fish and plants? Smh
@@CichlidBros I don't know if I'd call this a complaint. More of a suggestion. At the end of the day, the majority of people don't even know where the fish and or plants they are keeping originate. I just feel it's an overlooked and under appreciated cornerstone of the hobby.
Way to pimp the crib
