When I first played Mafia as a little kid, I was so dumb I couldn't get past the first mission where you had to save Sam and Paulie and evade the goons in the taxi.
Later though when I got past it and played through the entire game, it became apparent that it is one of the best ones I have played. When I was in Vienna, Austria, I even went to the Kunsthistorisches Museum just to see the building the museum from the last mission was modeled after.

This game is an absolute legend in Czech republic and Slovakia, as there is a professionally czech-dubbed variant of the game. We played it as kids, together with GTA3, however, the difference was that we understood what was happening (as at that time we didn't speak english). The storytelling in this game is absolutely awesome, the controls are not as clunky in my opinion, and I have no problem running it on modern systems (runs great on Linux via wine too :) ). It's a game I, and many many others, come regularly back to. Btw, there's a special trick to successfuly go through the racing mission in the 1.0 version of the game ;)
    Thanks for the review :)

As you wrote. Absolute legend. I would say the dubbing was the reason for the broad huge popularity. I mean, everyone could play this. My sister played at least the cab simulator. Even my grandma tried that several times. I am not joking.

This game was way ahead of its time, it'll always be one of my all time favorite game. A few notes:
    1. The police do come after you if you hit an NPC car in front of them if i remember correctly.
    2. The speed limiter was an interesting mechanic back when i played the game, involving a sharp lookout on the radar for any cops, focusing on the driving (Above the speed limiter, around 60) and keeping an eye out for any beat cops in the footpath. Admittedly, i played on 1024x768 resolution back then.
    3. The AI was more than competent in the game, both friendly and enemy variant.
    4. I often killed a policeman by running him over and then grabbing his S&W .36 from the body in missions that didn't give you a weapon from the beginning, just to be on the safe side. I did not trust this game at all.
    5. I ran out of gas, in a chase, multiple times. It was amazing.
    6. The story felt so gripping, so amazing in my young mind. I was totally invested in the game from beginning till end.
Even now i wonder how the hell did i finish this game as a kid on hard difficulty. It was just that much fun. If i have the option, i'll take Mafia 1 remaster over any GTA remaster any day, and that's coming from a guy who played every single GTA game and completed the 100% completion checklist on them.

Thank you for this review. In Czech republic this is our national treasure. Probably like The Witcher in Poland :-) Just a few points:
    1. It’s best to turn off the speed limiter and to break when you see the police on the radar. It’s a little bit annoying I agree. You just get used to it :D
    2. You can kill enemies with one headshot, you just need stronger weapon like Magnum revolver etc
    3. You can get help with the boxes in the docks if you ask the guys next to them :-)
    4. You can get the original music back in, you can find the guide online. I think the licence to the music expired and that is the reason why it was removed from the Steam for a while
    5. Race is quite difficult, but the most important part is to taky it slow and steady to avoid overspinning. After that it’s easy. :)
    6. You forgot to mention the Extreme free roam that unlocks after finishing the story. It’s like normal free roam but with 10 or 20 silly and funny “missions” like crossing the bridge which is being shot at or traverse the town and not going under a certain speed. After each succesful mission you get crazy car. It’s quite fun. :)
    7. The outside map is much bigger than motel and airport. You can drive around whole country in free roam. In this extended map is also a second ending of killing Morello mission. He will not go to airport and to the plane but he will continue going to countryside up to the bridge that is being repaired. Not many people know this because it seems like the game mostly chooses airport version for whatever reason.
    8. Without the dotted line or GPS you will remember this city quite soon. The best is to drive with the help of map. After that you will remember this city much better than something in GTA
Thanks again. I hope you will review Mafia 2 as well. Sadly third one is crap because Daniel Vavra left after the distributor forced him to do bad things to mafia and that’s how Mafia 3 ended up.

I bought this game in 2002 knowing absolutely nothing about it. It became one of my favorites of all time. It was extremely immersive, and the difficulty was just par for the course. PC games, overall, were simply much harder 15, 20, 30 years ago. I loved the realistic driving in this game even though the early cars were sooooo slow. Slow that it is, until you got some momentum built up from going down hills! The gun fighting was awesome - more realistic than today's games. The story - incredible. Finally winning that race after umpteen attempts was one of my greatest accomplishments in PC gaming. I mean, after the first few attempts, it did seem to be an IMPOSSIBLE task. I could never get into the GTA titles after playing Mafia because to me they just paled in comparison. I remember waiting, and waiting, and waiting for Mafia 2. Unfortunately after all that waiting, it just didn't quite capture the experience of the original. MAFIA - The perfect game of 2002 !!

The realism (although incomplete) and precision were some of the best aspects of the game! It's unfortunate that most gamers don't see it that way...
Especially realistic clip reloading. That always bothered me in most shooters from the getgo.

What a fantastic review. Even without nostalgia glasses, you can easily see just how realistic the game is, the guns are impactful and satisfying and the cars actually feel "alive" thanks to the physics engine, gears and all that good stuff. It's the little details that make this game stand out so much. The soundtrack is authentic, featuring some of the best hits from that era, and matched with every neighborhood in the game. That, and the wonderfully crafted story told through some brilliantly-written dialogue. I've beaten this game countless times since my childhood but it keeps pulling me back in, if you get the reference. Certainly one of the best games ever made out of the hundreds I've played.

also, its so hard to review this game if you havent played this game when it released, i mean hell! compare the graphics and story alone to gta 3 and its years beyond. this game was a masterpiece, and not a lot of people realise it. its 2020, its been 18 years since it released, and anyone playing it will only see the flaws, but you have to understand how important and mesmerising this game was when it released. to this day, i consider this game to be one of the best ever released, up there with half life. story-telling,graphics,gameplay. and trust me, playing this in 2002, your mind would have been blown, while being optimised for 2002, i consider it has much better graphics than san andreas. this game is only shit because we've gotten used to how easy games like gta v are, but you cant compare it. if you have nostalgia for gta 3 because you played it as a kid, you have no idea what playing mafia as a kid feels like. this game has a special place in my heart, and im not even czech!

I was immediately in love with the atmosphere, the classic cars, the suits, the music... I'd never played an open world game before, or watched any gangster films/TV, so I was totally blown away and swept up into it all. All these years later, I still rock pinstripe suits and love classic autos. It still holds up as my second favorite game of all time (second only to the sequel, Mafia II). Even Mafia III, for its faults, is still one of my favorites. One of my favourite games ever. I recently played it again in 2020. It's still a masterpiece but it's showing it's age. The game moves at a slow pace, you can't choose your weapons, third person combat leaves a lot to be desired, and the cars are very slow and when they do go fast they handle poorly.
Good points are an amazing soundtrack (on Steam you need to download the music files separately), a brilliant Mafia story, good voice acting, varied missions, long campaign, nice looking city, interesting characters. Compared to anything else of this era the game was a classic. Its definitely worth a play through if you've never experienced it. But just be aware it plays like an old game.

Mafia 1 - for me personally - is the best game of all time. I can't remember how many times I have played through it as a child.
This game is from an era when developers were not afraid to give a real challenge to the players. When I cleared each level, it brought a huge sense of accomplishment - as it took me a while to learn the ropes and when you finally master it, you feel exhilarated (this is the case from the very first mission, where you have to ditch the mobsters with your modest taxi)
The racing level was really difficult in the vanilla version as the difficult was set to max by default with no option to change it (the later patches allowed you to lower the difficulty) - I played the unpatched version and could finish the racing level at the original max difficulty after a few tries.
I got stumped at the mission "you lucky b******" (couldn't figure out how to get into the warehouse) - so I had to visit an internet cafe and read an online guide on how to beat it - no internet at home / youtube existed back then.
The story was also top notch - I won't go into spoilers here.
This game was like the dark souls of the 2000s
EDIT: To people who feel that the pacing / driving feels slow - many of my friends made this complaint as they got used to GTA III - and to top it off, crashing can seriously injure you / kill you - (another fun fact - keeping with the simulation aspect of the game, if you roll over a convertible / soft top car, its an install death and mission fail
my advice is drive carefully while taking in the scenery and music - think of it as a relaxing drive - I really enjoyed the simulation style driving in this game - each car felt different to drive and learning to steal the best ones felt awesome. More so on the countryside with the beautiful scenery and calming music.

If so many people still watch its review in 2020 ( many of whom like me due to nostalgia I'm sure), imagine how many people would absolutely love a remastered Mafia 1 and 2. Plus Godfather 1. Damn!
Moreover, I never found this game hard or frustrating back when i first payed it in 2003. That's how games were back then. And that's how they should always have been. They were supposed to challenge you. You were supposed to push through to have fun.
But then I'm not sure if I'm a more patient gamer than others, for I still play ARMA over Call of Duty, and Gothic over Skyrim. I like the difficulty that demands patience. It gives you more satisfaction in the end!

Indeed I remember it being very difficult at first, but I played the demo over a few times waiting for the full game to arrive so I got good hold of the controls. Certain levels took precision memorization of where enemies were though. The dockyard was especially frustrating with its one very long checkpoint gap.
I don't think it was the story that got me, just the setting (especially the music and all the cars I recognized) and calmer pace. Mafia II is much more... modern, more or less the slow paced linear GTA you were expecting. Mafia 3 is a mess.

I just finished it playing last week and i enjoyed it too much.
So many point in this video are true. I've been put off the game first time i tried it because i couldn't navigate the map,for a simple reason that my map was either bugged or i couldn't open it while i was walking which i didn't know.Or the car chases which were so stressful to the point of punching your monitor. But after the first few hours the game just becomes SO MUCH REWARDING!. To compare it to other games i would say its like The Getaway or Gta 4 + Dark Souls because of the lenght of the missions and joyfulness after you complete the mission. Only thing i didn't like about this game is that damn speed limit on the roads, its just too low, or the framerate issues on windows 10 which i fixed by opening and closing steam overlay in game(worked 90% of times). But other than that the game is enjoyable after first 3 hours of playing becomes more fun and harder. Oh yea and the graphics are actually good for the age in comparison to gta vice city or the games of that age.

Mafia 1 is and WILL ALWAYS be one of the BEST games I ever played!
Some games, you have to play them WHEN they come out, in that era.
Of course, if you come back to this game today, you will have troubles installing/modding/running it,
like I had also (there are some patches and stuff you need to install, to emulate the graphic cards
from that era, so that the image does not stutter, run on today's monitors (16:9, not 4:3) etc.
BUT, I still find the atmosphere and STORY, acting, SCORE in this game FANTASTIC, even today!
So glad they did a remake of it, but this old gem always brings me back to those times when
we had GTA3, where you could do all the rampage and blowing up stuff things,
BUT when you needed some classic and elegant playing, you came to Mafia.
Back then, I had an old computer, that could not even run GTA3.
Mafia 1 was THE graphical gem of that year and my friends were crazy about it.
Sure, GTA3 came out first, we all know that Mafia was in the works longer time,
but Mafia was "Al Pacino" or "De Niro" of games, back then.
Then, I upgraded my PC (bought a new video card and extra RAM) and I could run it on almost "high" details...
It still took ages to load (seriously, like 3-4, sometimes 5 minutes!).
    BUT, what an experience!
If you skip the gameplay issues (sure, shooting is kind of off etc.), THE SOUNDTRACK, THE STORY,
THE ELEGANT feel of this game... will BLOW you away, also today!
Like, this was the FIRST game to be able to start a engine separately (so not just "E" or "F" to enter a car),
to BLINK with a car, to get a TICKET from the police and be able to pay it... hahhahaha.
And, I repeat myself: if you like the '20s-'30s instrumental music style... then this game is NO BRAINER!
I always loved that music and I listen to jazz, swing etc. music nowadays, BECAUSE of it.
    Oh, man...
    Such nice times...
    Enough writing.
    GO play it!
Also, drop a comment here, let me know your Mafia 1 memories - or should I say: mémoires? :)

Wow, what a treat for us that you did this review. Very well said - that the game makes you reconsider what you think of it throughout your playthrough. I used to feel that 'Mafia' was my favorite game of all time, but the poor gunplay and covershooting mechanics, extremely repetitive pixel precision in shooting towards the end of the game, and the harbor and racing levels make it hard to honestly recommend. It's bewildering that the devs weren't questioned on some of these infuriating gameplay characteristics. The experience holds value, but time and time again in this game your patience will be tested. The box stacking in the harbor seems like 'gamer abuse' to me.

I loved this game, even though today it might feel outdated it's still one of the best games of all time. And I recently replayed Mafia 2 so I'm curious what you feel about this one too. I'd say it's almost as good as the first one, really worth coming back to.
Too bad there's no real 3rd Mafia, I really hope there will once again be a great Mafia story in game industry.

Every few years since 02 i pick Mafia back up. Mods can make this much better. Still not perfect but its the only open world game i know of to have a clutch for the cars.

Only game where the enemy npc's run out of ammo.
The car physics are annoying but authentic. The 1930's atmosphere is insane and the nice thing is that you can actually turn the engine off.

Brenno Calderan If I remember right enemies in fallout 4 could also run out of ammo. But sure, it's rare, and I agree with you on other points

Hotline Miami is where enemies could also run out of ammo.

Realism, story, music should be the the main positives for this game for anyone who is truly into this game. The guns are quite effective, enemies run out of ammo, you can carry few weapons, only one large weapon in your trench coat, you can refuel your car, you can unlock more cars when you learn how to steal them, there's tons of things to figure out via Easter eggs and talking to everyone for extra content, you are on your own in many missions that require getting into a location to whack somebody. So much to do in free ride extreme where you unlock prototype cars. Fine game and deserves its success. What it did best is the music, absolutely amazing orchestra. Adds to the unique feel and Wonder of being in this bustling city. Has issues with shadows on modern systems but 3danalyzer solves the issue when you mess with the settings. Overall if it wasn't for the combat feeling a bit clunky difficult and outdated as in all about twitch firing rather then being able to hide behind stuff in a proper cover system, it would hold up well except for the game world. It sadly doesn't look quite as good as it used to thus isn't as "big" as it used to be now that there's quite a few bigger open world games with perfect graphics, physics, character models, animations and weather systems.

Glad you did this game bc I've never played it but always wanted to. I beat mafia 2 and 3 and love the series. Really hope they remake this and maybe the 2nd. They can't let these get lost to time

You have no idea how much I miss playing this game.
With a traffic mod and a couple of fanmade models swapped with the "hotrod" cars, Freeroam was fucking perfect.
An Alfa Romeo 8C to take to the countryside, a 2000s Rolls Royce Phantom tucked away quietly somewhere, a diverse range of inperiod cars and a neatly organized cache of 20 or so of every weapon in an alley by Salieri's.
    Heaven. Beautiful. Perfection.
    Even better than GTA:SA.

I love playing old games and am not a stickler for graphics but I think for almost 20 years old the original pc version looks pretty good. Must have been mind blowing in its day

FINALLY! Mafia reviewed here ! Hell just frozen. I can die now. THANK YOU so much! From guy, who is making mods to Mafia to this very day!
But! From this review, you can see, how we are spoiled by modern games of today and we expect almost 20 year old game to control like modern games of last decade... There was a long journey in gaming controls since 2002 and features like "cover system" or "autoheal" were NOT a standard feature in games 15-20 years ago, not at all. It's the same rule, if You review, for instance, old movies. You have to look at them with eyes of viewers of time period, when movie was realeased. You get the point, you just can't judge old movie by today's standards. And since videogames are much shorter history, than movies are, you should look at 20yo game the same way, as You look to movie from 1950's or 1960's. Of course it makes no sense to criticise 1960's movie for lack of special effects and Dolby Atmos soundtrack and same applies here...
And all that graphic glitches you saw, they were not there back in the days. There are caused by modern graphic drivers. Remember, this game runs on DX 8.1 and current graphic drivers don't exactly treat it right... Worst problem with Mafia is, people expect it to be "GTA in 1930's", they have some expectations, which this game CAN NOT satisfy and they are mad... Same problem with L.A. Noire. Just because it's open world, it doesn't mean, it HAVE TO BE a GTA CLONE...
