- Breaking News the Pittsburgh Steelers are declining the fifth-year option on running back Najee Harris, meaning he will be a free agent after this season. This comes as a surprise to many, if the Steelers were to pick up the option it would’ve cost them $6.97M for the 2025 season. Najee Harris has had 1,000+ yards rushing in all three seasons spent with the Steelers. Steelers Talk host Jack Sperry breaks down the Najee Harris option being declined in this video.

CBS Sports’ Bryant McFadden on his tweet indicating the Steelers could be landing a ‘significant playmaker’:
“The background of my tweet was I have a close friend who’s tied to the NFL. He’s been heavily involved in different discussions. He’s been hearing so many different things. He’s one of the first people that told me about the Justin Fields trade well before it actually happened. That’s the type of relationships he has in the NFL. So of course you know my Steeler ties he told me that it seems like something could happen sooner or later… My friend felt like it was about 75% chance of happening but through negotiations things can literally fall through. How I worded my tweet. I apologize if people took it like it was going to instantly happen. I apologize if people felt like I was playing with their emotions. Like I said, it was a tweet from what I heard. It wasn’t something that I wanted to create on my own… But I do believe and I think it should happen.”

PFF’s Gordon McGuiness on Stephone Gilmore to the Steelers:
“Gilmore will turn 34 at the start of the 2024 season but has performed well in three one-year stints with different teams since 2022. He earned a 69.3 PFF coverage grade in 2023, allowing 734 yards and five touchdowns from 622 snaps in coverage while totaling 11 combined interceptions and pass breakups. The Steelers played Cover 1 on 25.8% of passing downs last season, with the Cowboys one of just five teams to do so at a higher rate, and still have a need at cornerback.”

DEAR GOD NO
Put did not make the right call on Najee they should have picked up the option
No
NO
Maybe they're planning on resigning him to an extension to save cap space for 2025, to resign either Russell Wilson or Justin Fields...
They will sign both.
@c.antoinehill100 Both Wilson and Fields? Definitely not, that's way too expensive, these are QB contracts we're talking about
I bet HE wants to go. He’s a west-coast guy. Plus, not fast like Arthur Smith likes. Mutual decision
@@blairbrownie1223He ran a 4.45 40. Faster than Warren.
@garycarter7760 ....you should be a GM...you nailed it bro #Baby Khan
They finally give najee a decent o'line, and then they decline his 5th year option ? Better be a strategy for cap space. 😤
Just gonna make a new deal hehe. We got Omar Khan, he does our guys good
Trust in Khan
Hell no! I hope they're thinking of resigning him, or it will be a dumb ass move. Now that we have this monster line, Najee will show what he really can do.
I disagree with Kahn about Najee. Should have signed the extension.
They still might sign him to a new contract. Depending on how he does in this new offense
Kahn also said they were happy with Picket
@@jordellfreshbreeze7133 The Najee and warren duo was awesome I dont want to lose harris.
Great move for Kahn. We will be fine and have plenty of RB options for cheaper and better. Kahn has money he needs to save for next year
They declining the option to give him a new deal…. Common sense
Thank you I feel like everyone is over looking the fact they can resign if for a long term deal. Which I hope we do he deserves it
Naj may not even want that though
Why wouldn't he@@Aubrella11
Exactly
Exactly
Don't understand the business end but I hope Najee is a Steeler for his whole career. Maybe they are looking at a new longer term deal now.
Very smart move to extend Najee Harris and Justin Fields, or Russell Wilson next season Omar keeping killing it as a GM 💯💯💯
The Justin Fields at kick returner is Not Funny AT ALL cut that shit out !!!
I trust Omar. Keep the faith Steelers fans.
Really a shame. I really like Najee
There is still a good chance he stays. They might give him a long term deal mid season that will be good for him and them
For a first round RB, Najee pretty much underwhelmed. Too many negative runs and he isn't exactly fast either. Quite frankly, I'd ha e been more shocked if they picked up his 5th year.. Look at Warren, he was undrafted..
Underwhelmed? We gave him an ATROCIOUS o line and dude still put up 3 straight 1k seasons in a row. Did I mention he was the ONLY rb in the league to do that?
@@Aubrella11 Running backs are a dime a dozen... Jaylen Warren is proof. Also, barely cracking 1k yards in a 17 game season isn't that great. That's 58.8 yd's/game.. Le'Veon Bell was a worthy first rounder, Najee is not. Sorry, but facts.
Facts are that Najee has given us everything with the horrible coaching horrible o line, literally carried the entire offense on his back multiple seasons and the do him dirty
@@misterwirez7731 How dare you compare Najee to Bell. lol, Bell averaged 129 scrimmage yards per game his entire career in Pittsburgh. Highest in NFL history.
remember when Najee said he could do everything Leveon Bell could as well or better?? That didn't age well
Maybe so they can just extend him without the hassle of him holding out and/or having Najee feel like they are trying to pay him less, Omar Khan knows exactly what moves to make to utilize the cap in the best possible ways
We couldnt give najee 7 mill bruh..our guy is a work horse definitely deserved it
harris did pretty good with a not so good o-line , he might light it up this year behind a good line and that price might be a lot higher and he may have a lot of bidders for his services
You have to see how he runs in this new offense running east and west not so much north and south like before.
Best thing about Najee is he never fumbles, which is so important and shouldn't be overlooked
He's fumbled before
For Najee I say let's look at the stats after this season with a new improved line and no more Matt Canada
It makes so much sense. Why ink a contract for good amount of money before you even know how Najee works in Arthur Smith System. And even if you lose him u still got Warren
Pass on Gilmore & CP for KR
Brooke Pryor said on nfl live she said team wants to see how he does in Arthur Smith's offense.
yes...
I heard it on ESPN that they are most likely to keep him. They are just exploring their options, based on his performance this upcoming season.
If Najee was good, Warren wouldn’t get time like he do
We can always pick najee up.later on
Pay him a little more now before his price goes up now that we have a line and eclipse 1000 yards when we had no oline. Keep the one two punch with him n Warren. #Zeke #Pollard before the split
I've been rooting for my Steelers for well over 40 years. The RB contract days have been over since the Bus. It hurt to see Bell leave so I'm pretty sure Harris will be gone soon. Edward's will shine though.
No
S! I think he would be a great signing! Mentor JPJ & a veteran with real good experience! 🔥🔥🔥
Rb class is stacked next year good decision
Yes-perhaps extend Warren while he’s cheap and pair him with a rookie next year to keep the dual back system going-no need be overly reliant on a bell cow back.

JF as slash.
Ya heard that this morning 😢
Warren is a beast 🥳🥳
Think they are planning long term contract. 👍
Would you also offer Warren a one year 7Million guaranteed contract ? If not, why Harris, his production is similar...
I love Najee he is a hard worker and great locker room presence… we would be stupid to let him go …
If they don't give him a contract I'm going to be really mad at the steelers najee is the truth, not only can he run the rock and elude defenders in every which way and form but he also has great hands, that's why he was drafted in the first round, people tend to over look his catching ability
They’ll sign him. Yes his yards per carry haven’t been high, but he was playing behind guys like Dotson, Green, Trai Turner, Dan Moore and Okorafor. This is his first actual O Line.
Just because they declined it that doesn't mean they won't offer him a new contract if he does good this season. Five years is a long time to be a running back in the nfl. Why offer an outrageous contract now.
It’s the same story next year with RBs. There’s a lot of RB depth like Ollie Gordon from Oklahoma State and Quinshon Jenkins from Ohio State. These guys could be actual first round guys depending on how team needs evolve. Yes I love Najee, he’s been a great Steeler and I hope they can make it work but at the end of the day it’s $$ and RB wear and tear.
Yes
If they don’t sign him to a long term good deal then yes it was the wrong thing to do. If they do sign him long term then yes it was the right thing to do. But imo I don’t see Naj signing with us long term. He could go out and ball out this season and demand good money from another team that the Steelers may not be willing to pay. Imo it was risky to decline the option and risk him going elsewhere next year.
Or , risk a career ending injury , to be cast off like a old pair of shoes ?
Declining the 5th yr option does not mean that Najee will not be a Steeler in 2025-2026 season. But it does appear consistent with Khan's philosophy of 'radical transparency and openness' in this process ... with a new and robust offensive line of very gritty brawler types, Najee should flourish. If he does, it boosts his value no matter where he ends up and most likely Steelers will be in that mix. If he doesn't flourish, he wasn't their guy anyway. So it's a potential win win for Najee to prove himself to the Steelers or whatever team he ends up with. Hopefully the Steelers will use him in the open field ... both he and warren are tanks in the open. Najee, especially with his size and skills, is suited to that kind of strategy/use than fast off the snap through the line.
you can check the comments of the last video about Cam Sutton. I called out Beenie in the slot. he's such a sleeper!!!
I pray and hope this is false . I just get the feel this will be the same as the Zeke /Pollard situation. The younger flashier object got the nod and couldn't carry the full load
More likely a Pacheco and Helaire, 1st round disappointment loses his job to the 7th rounder with talent.
It's good for Najee. He isn't under contract next year. If he has a good year, he could earn a good payday
Najee is obviously a quality RB and it doesn’t mean a deal couldn’t be struck later but it’s the same RB theme. High quality RB’s are available every year in later rounds plus with Warren in the mix…wait and see deal with the new offensive line. Always a $$ game. Can’t fall in love with anyone less than a TJ Watt caliber player.
NO!!!!

Ridiculous move
😅yes. They can sign him if they still want him.Warren is more than capable of taking over as well.
Warren is not an every down rb1. Yes he’s great as a 1-2 punch. But once defenses figure him out, he gets the wear and tear since he isn’t as big as Naj, he will be looking pretty bad in no time. Naj has proved he is healthy, available, doesn’t fumble nearly as much as Warren, and can still put up three straight seasons wit 1000 yards even with an abysmal line. Think what he can do with a great o line
THE DECISION TO NOT PICK UP THE FIFTH YEAR CONTRACT OF NAJEE HARRIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN AN AUTOMATIC DECISION ON THE STEELERS PART !! Please someone explain this move to me !!!’
100% Justin Fields!!!
I don't think they did... Once Najee gets rolling, he is hard to get down...just needs a step or 2, and he will get that with the potential upgrade with the OL... I think they will reget that decision.
Seriously? They better be signing him to new contract. Wth he's the only consistent thing we had on offense.
Would you sign Stephon Gilmore? Type 'S' for Sign, or 'P' for Pass
S
S. He can be the "new" Patrick Peterson. What I mean by that is not only can he mentor and help develop JPJ and Cory Trice Jr. but he can help Donte Johnson(even though he's an 8yr vet) develop his skills.
P
We don't need another old war horse that we'll have to let go of next year. If he got cooked by the Packers wide outs what do you think J. Chase will do to him?
The Steelers need to give D. Rush a serious look. He like JPJ is 6'2", he runs a 4 37 40 and is a press man cover corner
Sign
I think it's a smart move. If Najee kills it and has an amazing season, do you think he'd be happy at 7 mil next year? We could end up in another L bell holdout situation. If he underperforms or stays about the same we can get him for a bit less. I hope we sign him and he gets some well earned money, but i don't want to overpay at rb especially. I think it's a win win except for maybe hurting some feelings. The steelers take care of their players so i think they'll talk to him and pay him.

I have mixed feelings on Najee. I expected a little of Bettis and Bell and at times we have seen both. Maybe with a good o-line and OC more will come out. Also Warren has taken snaps from him and he needs to earn them back.
Tranquilos Omar sabe lo qué hace, todo lo tiene fríamente calculado 😏🖤💛👍
Najee is a good Steeler .. I hope he has a great season then gets a nice payday elsewhere!
No,sign Harris and keep the duo together

Pittsburgh is taking the right approach with this WR Delima just take your time don't need to take a WR who is washed up, overpriced or a bust. Get someone who yah could be a number 2 but what would be bad with having 2 number 1 WR's?
In Khan we trust! He’s got a plan. Let the man do his job.
Just cause they didn't pick up Harris or Fields options doesn't mean they won't be playing 2025 they know what they are doing and I really like and trust the Khan Artists and Gillmoure would be an awesome addition if we can add him another receiver or two and we could really be contenders
Draft pick Wilson will be the slot
Trade idea: Najee a first and fifth for Metcalf
Yeah he’s gonna be due 6.5 m so I think they gonna restructure him for a longer tenure
Bryant McFadden’s “friend” is AB
P getting out there in age. Going to be 34. Get some youngblood
Pick a kickoff returner for 2024: Type 'CP' for Cordarrelle Patterson, or 'JF' for Justin Fields
JF
CP
Why would you have your back up QB a potentially your future starter take the risk of returning kickoffs?
CP JF would be a waSTE OF TALENT.
CP With the new kickoff rules, Fields would be a weapon and probably amazing back there. But, I would rather re--sign him to be our future at QB and that's not worth the risk.
Hope James Harrison was at the facility the other day to talk to Najee and explain the first half of the season is his opportunity to get paid but understand that football is a business.
what i think will happen, is cam heyward possibly could retire next year, and that will free up cap space
Najee got outplayed by Warren. Prove me wrong. $7M for a RB is over priced in todays market and game
Stop this nonsense
Save that money for Jaylen, kid is something special, gets better every year.
@@ringoesroadking my point exactly! I understand the passion people might have but dropping $7M for a RB that got bested by Warren seems illogical.
I can't understand how people are suprised? Has any player in history been as thoroughly outplayed by every metric of positional evaluation, lost half the workload and the bulk of the passing game work. And then gotten rewarded with a better contract?? Steelers say they love Najee, they also said pickett was their guy moving forward. Lol
@@ringoesroadking right?!
RBs are a dime a dozen these days they can get another Jaylen Warren in UDFA and pay them nothing!
Have to make sure they have money to pay for their quarterback next year
YES
Might be a new $ deal cuz Echelon has other important positions to fill. They'll probably negotiate a new contract. SB '24 '25 Championship rings all around y'all!!!
Crazy decision
HE WAS GREAT WITH A SHITTY ASS LINE..With a good line He will be Crazy
only team friendly
Why is this surprising! He was a bad 1st rd pick!
A 1000 yds is 59yds per game in a 17 game season, big deal. He is not worth 6m, keep Warren the better back and draft a 3rd rounder.
Naj is not explosive nor an evetydown back.
This ideal for yhe Steelers now Najee must play well this year so he could demand a ton of cash for 2026
I don't agree should have picked up Harriss' contract
If you believe Justin Fields is the future of the Pittsburgh Steelers at the quarterback position, you can get his officially licensed Steelers jersey from our friends at Fanatics right now:
chatsports.com/fields
No! Russ is a better QB. I like him as a SLASH type player though and that could open up some wild plays in a trick scenario...
The new offense they are bringing in is more of an outside run scheme. He is more a North South runner. We all know he did not do as well running outside....They want to see how well he does in this offense before signing him again. If he shows what they want, they resign him later or just draft another guy next year OR pick up a better outside runner in free agency. RBs are a dime a dozen, in relative terms.
If a team can't run in all directions it is doomed to fail. Today's nfl defenses can adjust to stop the north/south or east/west. But it's hard adjust when a team can do both
# wow 🎉
CP
Three years in a row Najee Had a horrible offensive line and every year he produced over 1000 yards rushing is a disgrace because now they finally got him a dirty nasty offensive line I want to see just how important this dude is
Where else are the Steelers gonna find 3.9 ypc and 6 100 yard rushing games in 3 full seasons.
What if Pittsburgh Steelers trade Najee to Seattle for say Metcalf ?
They are going to get another WR. Having you talk about it every day does not speed up the process...lol.
No he did not make a good decision with Harris you can’t let smash walk!!!
So Bmac wanted attention and Steelers aren’t fully committed to competing long term… interesting development. Najee is disgustingly underrated. Hopefully they have plans for an extension
Yes😊
A longer extension is coming for Najee...yinz need to calm dahn
