Hardware used:
1-1/4" Deck screws (for fence boards and for attaching fence brackets to the rails)
3" Deck Screws (for fence brackets and toe-screwing gate)
2"x4" Fence Brackets
Gate Hardware Kit
Tools used:
Milwaukee M12 Fuel Impact Driver
Milwaukee M18 Circular saw
Tape Measure
String Line
Post-Hole Diggers
Shovel
Roto-Hammer (with 1" bit)
Cherry picker (Yep, I really needed that)
I forgot to mention that I leveled each fence board with a Torpedo level before I installed all the screws. I also ran a stringline on the top and middle of where I wanted the fence to make sure I put the post where I wanted it.
Biggest mistake I see other builders make is setting the hinge side on one post . I always build the hinge side off 2 post for extra support , basically taking half of the load . I also cut my gates out instead of building and attaching, but if it doesn’t fail and sag over time and your happy with it , that is all that matters . Thx for the vid.
Actually that's why i was watching this video to see how screwed the plank to the wall..
Great job!
Talk about working smarter and not harder. Great job young man!!
Thanks:) I have built too many fences to keep doing it the hard way!
I want to see what shape that rough built gate is in now, 3 years later
Good Concise Video. Thanks Mate
I missed the part where you screwed the plank to the wall. I'd really like to see how that is done.
Thanks for the video!
good job! , thx for posting this video
Looks great Taylor. Excellent instructional video as usual.
Great job sir. Thanks for the helpful tips.
How do you open the gate if you're in the backyard?
Awesome!
How you open the gate if you are inside looks like you need different hardware to open the gate from both sides
You are awesome!!!! I just finished closing off my yard. I would suggest getting 2 L brackets for the opposite corner of the gates. Holds it much steadier. Thank you so much dude.
Does the gate frame have to be square? Lol what about rectangular? With the longer pieces runnning vertically and the shorter side running horizontally?
Can we get a follow up on this gate build?
Thanks
Also how tall is this fence?
🤣🤣🤣🤣 cherry picker with a jammed drill bit was the best.
Dude, I was so stinking mad while digging that hole! Nothing but rocks!
@@StrangeGarage you did a great job, I'm currently taking notes on your video because im gonna building one in a couple of weeks.
Would recommend anyone to add water to your posts before nailing or screwing anything onto said post. This will ensure the same level throughout the fence.
Usually add water last, because when you add water you gotta let the concrete dry before you can disturb it. You can plumb everything after you build it and it will turn out just fine :) but I don't have all the answers. Your way is just fine too.
What software do you use for 3d modelling? Thanks.
Fusion 360. Same software I use for my CNC machine and 3D printer. It's not great, but it does what I need it to do.
Looks great are you going to treat them later ?
Thanks brother! I cheated and bought pre stained. Saved me a little time.
Am a technician l just love making stuff am gonna go for capentry
Why the hell is the gate latch on the outside??
I have a heeler names Lily too!
Why did you use a standard "untreated" 2x4? What tooth count did you use on your battery powered saw...
The most helpful part is attaching the wood to the wall of the house, but you skipped that part. Bummer.
10 points!!
How do you get out from the inside
You don’t. You are now one with the backyard
Verifying that your gate is square by taking diagonal measurements is fine, if your gate is going to be square. Most gates are rectangular.
Measuring across still works with rectangles. I should have clarified I was trying to make the frame parallel top and bottom. Square can be a misleading term, but in my day to day I use the term "square" to say parallel on both axis.
Nice gate..however using a string line would have been better.2x4 tend to sag.
It doesn’t have to be a square to be square, you can make a rectangle and it will still have the same dimension if you cross square it
What app is that where you are making the gate. Is it a design program?
Fusion360. It's CAD/CAM/Animation software. It's what I use for my CNC projects.
@@StrangeGarage Thanks for responding. The Kings Fine Woodworking channel shows a video, and I like where he describes setting the concrete for the post to run away from the post and down at an angle. Less rot at the base of the posts for sure. As water is woods enemy. 🪵 lol. Great videos guy. I am a fan. 👍
👍
Has cement mixer, pours bag dry into hole. I don’t get it.
If I pour it wet then I have to wait for it to set before I can build the fence. Dry, I can work on the fence then add water.
Strange Garage eh. I have a day to wait for the post to set well.
What software did you use
Fusion360.
You obviously don't live in Louisiana. That would blow down during storm season.
You're correct: this is not a hurricane rated fence. But realistically, what is a hurricane fence, besides chain link?
2:55 Who is that little helper?
You don’t need a roto till hammer though

Not sure but it looks like your posts are not treated. I’ve never seen treated lumber with those slices in it. Just saying I see no treatment.
It's PT. It may be a regional thing, but where I'm from those slices means the wood is treated.
I don’t mean to be that guy but why don’t you put the lock that you can unlock from outside and inside
No you're good. I just didn't buy that one. I can't remember if the store was out of them or if it was just too expensive. My wife keeps asking me to put one of those on.
Strange Garage i do wood fences for a living I do the same tactics I usually put three pickets to hold the hinges than kinda just work my way over but you did good on yours definitely
To bad not every gate is square...
Very true, that's why you need to plumb your posts.
Bad gate... rest was ok
How not to build a fence... or gate. :P
Seem awful cocky for someone watching instructional videos... I would expect anyone watching this video to be a beginner, without the faintest idea what you are doing. If you already knew everything you should have no problem at all building a fence without the help of an idiot like me.
So...here its against code to attach fence directly to your house.
Code can be a funny thing. In my city you won't find a house where the fence isn't attached straight to the wall. In either case you would just have to do a post at the end if you can't just anchor it to the wall.
shoulda went 4' down....just sayin'
Around here they rott out at the fence base long before they tip over.
