Some people are very good at saving money and have a high savings rate, while other people are very bad at saving and have a low savings rate or do not save anything at all. People who have trouble saving often don't understand the reasons why they are unable to save. In this video, I share 10 common reasons why people can't save money.
1. Not Having Money Saved
It's hard to save money when you don't have money saved because when a surprise expense comes in life, you're easily knocked down and have trouble getting ahead. Once you are behind financially, it is very hard to get back ahead. If you don't have money saved, it is important to take drastic measures to save money because until you have money saved, it is very hard to save money.
2. An Expensive Car Payment
Cars at the number one wealth killer because they are so expensive. The average monthly payment for a new car is over $700 and for a used car is over $500. It is important to not fall into the trap of getting an expensive car payment because they prevent you from being able to save more money.
3. Not Buying Quality
Although it is important to not overspend on an expensive car payment, it is also important to not under spend and get a bad quality car that causes you a bunch of problems. Many people will buy bad quality things and then constantly have to pay more because of the quality.
4. Being House Poor
The biggest expense in most people's budget is their rent or mortgage and the rule of thumb is that your rent should not exceed 30% of your income; however, many people spend more than that on their rent and are unable to cover their other expenses and save. This is called being "house poor." Many people are house poor where too much of their budget goes to their rent and they're unable to save.
5. You’re Living Alone
The reality in today's housing market is that most people are unable to afford keeping their rent under 30% of their income unless they live with other people. Living alone is very expensive because you have to pay for 100% of all expenses. Many people have trouble saving money because they live alone.
6. Your Vices Control You
Vices like cigarettes, beer, and lottery tickets often create many financial problems for people where even though they're struggling financially, they spend their money on these vices because they control them. Many people are unable to save money because their vices control them.
7. They’re “Unlucky”
Some people seem to run into more financial surprises than others and they often think it is because they're unlucky. Having bad luck over along period of time often means that they're are making bad decisions. If you always have bad things happen to you, look at your decisions and you might be able to save more.
8. You Don’t Earn Enough Money
Although it is important to cut out small expenses like eating out or switch to a low cost cell phone plan, the biggest factor that determines how much you can save is your income. If you are making a low salary, it is will be hard to ave no matter how many corners you cut.
9. You Don’t Have A Strong Enough Why
An important thing that motivates people to save money is knowing the reason they are saving. Many people struggle to save money because they don't have a strong enough why.
10. You Live A Chaotic Life
Some people are unable to save money because they live chaotic lives where they don't budget, don't have a plan, and are always stressed out, which causes them to spend more. If you life a chaotic life, it is important to make intentional decisions to bring order in your life so you are able to save more money.

Exceedingly proud of you, Austin!!! ❤
Well deserved Agustin. Here's to one million! 🎉🎉
Amazing, congratulations!!

I live alone in Sweden and I'am able to save 75% of my income, because I have a low rent. I only save money to feel free.
Literally!!!! Just sitting around my house, doing nothing, has a whole different vibe to it now that I have money saved up because I know I'm not trapped.
I think that's the key. Having access to low and affordable housing/transportation. That's what sucks up most people's money.
My mortgage payment is $700 a month-I make decent money and I also get a bonus at end of each month and have a nest egg in savings…there is freedom in staying home on Friday night cooking dinner and watching a movie especially since I know for me it’s “optional”
I've lived in a 250 a month shared room with strangers who play loud music, smoke in the room etc. I've also lived alone in a 500 a month own unit alone but overall my quality of life is muuuuch better. I'd choose living in that 500 a month unit over and over again. Some things aren't worth the sacrifice nor the money saved
How are u living alone for 500..

I am so happy that i made a productive decision about my finances that changed my life forever. I am a single mother and i live in Florida, i bought my first house in September and i hope to retire next year at 40 if all goes well. Thanks to Mrs Judith M Layton for helping me achieve this.
Wow. I'm a bit perplexed seeing her been mentioned here also Didn’t know she has been good to so many people too this is wonderful, I'm in my fifth trade with her and it has been super.
The very first time we tried, we invested $1000 and after a week, we received $3900. That really helped us a lot to pay up our bills
You trade with Judith M Layton too? Wow that woman has been a blessing to me and my family
I'm new at this, please how can I reach her?
I was skeptical at first until I decided to try. It’s huge returns is awesome! I can’t say much.
Managing money is different from accumulating wealth, and the lack of investment education in schools may explain why people struggle to maintain their financial gains. The examples you provided are relevant, and I personally benefited from the market crisis, as I embrace challenging times while others tend to avoid them. Well, at least my advisor does too, jokingly.
Investors should exercise caution with their exposure and exercise caution when considering new investments, particularly during periods of inflation. It is advisable to seek guidance from a professional or trusted advisor in order to navigate this recession and achieve potential high yields.
This is superb! Information, as a noob it gets quite difficult to handle all of this and staying informed is a major cause, how do you go about this are you a pro investor?
It's often true that people underestimate the importance of financial advisors until they feel the negative effects of emotional decision-making. I remember a few summers ago, after a tough divorce, when I needed a boost for my struggling business. I researched and found a licensed advisor who diligently helped grow my reserves despite inflation. Consequently, my reserves increased from $275k to around $750k.
this sounds considerable! think you know any advisors i can get on the phone with? i'm in dire need of proper portfolio allocation
Finding financial advisors like Melissa Terri Swayne who can assist you shape your portfolio would be a very creative option. There will be difficult times ahead, and prudent personal money management will be essential to navigating them.
I've been on disability for the last decade and couldn't improve my income. I'm now in my 30s and finally on the right meds (still trying to get to the right doses). Now I'm going to community college and hopefully I'll have my first proper job by the time I'm in my mid 30s. I'm tired of barely having any money and dealing with social security every time they try to screw me over. I might be behind, but it's not too late. Watching vidoes like these helps remind me of my motivations
It's never too late, you can do it !
Keep it up you'll get there. I was stuck in my fear and not wanting to learn money management for years, at 60 I became a widow my beloved husband no longer around to take care of me, so I have to face my fear and learning how to manage my bills, save and be financially debt free, I'm now 64.5 and this October I'll be debt free. No savings yet, but not inquiring new debts...
Hi, I’m in a similar circumstance. You aren’t alone. We can do this! Keep up the good work and God bless you!
Can I suggest you check out the Carnivore diet, not because it will fix your disability (unless it is an autoimmune illness, then yes, it could) but it will help you be the very best version of yourself and as crazy as it sounds it has huge mental as well as psychical benefits. No Carb Life is a great channel to hear different people's personal experiences of this way of eating. I found it to fix arthritis which it has and love all the other unexpected benefits. Never, ever going back to a standard diet.
@@Baabaabelle Do you mean a high-protein diet?
If you get the wrong roommate to 'split the cost' of housing, you could end up paying spending more than if you were living by yourself. Thank you for your videos!
Strangers have mental problems, hygiene problems, financial problems... Having a roommate is a HUGE risk that can destroy your finances and credit. Why does no one address this?
Yeah, you have to be careful with who you live with or you could end up taking a financial hit!
@@lindsay3793 Agreed. Plus you have someone in your business unnecessarily. I took at roommate to court 14 years ago. I won, but I am still trying to collect on the judgment. Better to live alone and lock the door.
@@VoxWodler Sorry to hear. I hope you get your money but I doubt it.
This expectation that we are supposed to share a home (our most vulnerable, valuable sanctuary) with some rando off the street... It's insane! My coworkers lie, cheat, and steal. I don't trust anyone! Just the way people treat each other in general... The majority of people have no integrity and will stab you in the back at the drop of a hat. Then once you realize how terrible your live-in roommate is you cannot even legally evict them for six full months.
No. I refuse to be exploited by some creep in my own home!
@@lindsay3793 Exactly. Look, in theory its a good idea if everything works out. The best thing is to go back in time to 1980, buy a place and live in it now.
Single moms can’t really have roommates . Wouldn’t want that kind of life for young kids. Too uncomfortable for all involved also unsafe.
Men in finance give a lot of useful and helpful advice but yes, as ladies we need to sift through it carefully find what works best for us :)
As women period... So vulnerable to have crazies living in your own sanctuary.
Maybe a friend you could share with? Doesn't have to be stramgers
Make amends with the kids Dad and have him move in .
@@nvmcrider8475 this is how dv cases start 🙄
I use to live with a billionaire from Italy when I was a kid during the summers and her house was a two bedroom 2 bath in Florida with no AC. She bought her clothes from thrift stores and drove a vw van from the 80s and her friends were millionaires and they all lived the same life style but had air conditioner
Really?😮
@@sharonloveschocolateyea she had royalty blood line, owned a lot of real estate in Europe and US. Real money live very frugal and donate a lot and that’s why they are blessed. people that look rich are in debt and miserable behind close doors.
A billionaire and still living on a low income, with no AC in FL ? Did she have a mental issue ? 🤔
No ac keeps them out of the house.
@@debbiewalker273she seemed normal people from Europe just different I guess. Never remembered being hot she lived on the inter coastal and the windows and doors were always opened and I remember a cool breeze always came thru the house.
I have to disagree with you on dealerships. When buying cars, they can be just as slimy as a private seller trying to scam you.
True and after 2 decades of no car payments/ my 26yo car that I drive was bought outright. When I have to replace that car, I will dread using a dealership. I don't want a new new car either.
Some, not all. Get recommendations from people you know
Congratulations on 100,000 subscribers!!! It was well earned!!!🎉
Two and a half years in the making!!! I've learned that you can get to 10k by "accident" with lucky videos, but 100k takes tons of analyzing and consistency over a long period of time! It's been exhausting, but I've grown so much as a person through this and have learned so many life lessons along the way.
We save a huge amount of our income. I cut much of our grocery budget by making my own cleaning products, bread, and more. We don't buy tp or paper towels. The last vehicle we bought we paid cash for. We save for everything. We bought a fixer upper, paid it off early, and turned it into a beautiful home.
Greatly done... agree...dont tell the lots , theyre too indolent in mind..😮
In 2022, I was 55 years old and making 90k, living single. My prior rent to income was about 40%.
In 2023, I became quite ill and was forced to retire. Now I am on a fixed income and I’ve had to move overseas where my current rent is 30% of my retirement income. The key is to be flexible in life.
To pay 50% of your income for rent is pretty common here in Germany. All living costs have gone crazy over the last years. Makes saving even more difficult.
How bout impossible at those rates 😂
same in New Zealand
Regarding skimping on quality, I remember my dad telling me
Always buy the best. It's usually the cheapest.
As in
Always buy quality tools and don't be tempted by the cheap Chinese stuff
Not only will the cheap ones break and need to be replaced, you might end up with blocdy knuckles and require a doctor visit.
kiana rachel was my hope during the 'bear summer' last year. I did so many mistakes but also learned so much from it, and of course from kiana rachel.
success 200k today. Thank you for all the knowledge and nuggets you had thrown my way over the last months. Started with 24k in last month 2024
You trade ?? Wow that's huge, how do you make that much monthly?
rachel approaches trading in a completely unique way. I'm puzzled by her methods. She just seems to have an innate understanding of this trading world
she's mostly on Telegrams, using the user name.
....
@kiana745...that is it.
Thanks for the reminder of save money 😅my husband and I have very little income and we still have ben able to save 50.00 % of our income because we live with a budget we think is not how much you make is how we spend the income 😊is awesome 👏
I can't save money because my savings keeps getting depleted due to emergency vehicle expenses, unexpected medical bills. I've had to restart like 3 times in the last 14 months because of this and this is coming from someone who follows the 50/30/20 rule. Im considering just going frugal and just save everything and spend nothing on my self anymore
I totally agree - Anthony O’Neill (AO) always say have your vision for what you want (your why) it’s easy to run all decisions and purchases asking the questions “does this align with my vision”
I can relate with car repairs.
We had ten years like that, it's the restarting that's important. We kept going though and stayed diligent and we retire a little bit early in 5 weeks
I don't recall if it's the 30 or 20% that's spent on "wants", but there's your problem right there. I don't know who can afford that plan at all and not go broke (unless they are very high income earners). Definitely go frugal to get ahead. Good luck!!!
Read the richest man in Babylon
Here in the USA it is very very difficult to save! They don't increase income at all! It's a big problem!
Easiest way is to get a better paying job. I had a job once for 4 years I did NOT get a raise
@@JAMUSA2018 that is somewhat true but people have to change careers and/or get into more debt by getting higher degrees just to get a "better paying job" which is only a couple dollars more.
As a Dutch tourist , some 7 years ago , I felt things I take for granted cost TWICE as much in ze lent ov ze free.... remember travel to Sweden , before EU roaming came into force , a Swedish sim card with phone balance incl. installing was less than 10 EUR. There is structurally LESS competition in Merrycuh than popular belief , so trapped in delusion...
It's even better if you can set yourself up to not need a car in the first place.
If you're going to buy a used, cheap car, buy something old. Pre 2012 ideally. We have a 91 ford and that thing is so cheap and easy to fix that replace the transmission cost us only a few hundred dollars.
2015 or 2017 years are cheaper in Canada 🇨🇦
I agree with you I'm on low income and I do better than people that have a job with my savings people don't know how to live within there means

I work on content creation, and we're often told everything has to be fast-paced and flashy to keep the viewer engaged, but watching your channel is such a breath of fresh air. I discovered your channel yesterday, and I've already watched like 20 videos. You're proving that having an incredible personality and providing great value to people is enough to succeed, so congrats on 100k! I'm now starting my frugality journey following your advice. Thank you, and keep it up.
Thanks! I find that annoying when words pop up on the screen to try to manipulate people into not clicking off. It might help in the short term with views, but I think the long term strategy is slowly building a relationship with the audience and gaining their trust over time. If you do that then they will show up for every video and come to you.
They're wrong. I mute and skip every single flashy, noisy ad. I'm tired of everything being an actual assault. I also skip or block every video where someone is making a creepy little secret society signal like covering their mouth, putting a "V" around an eye, pointing to an eye, one finger over mouth, etc. I won't watch most modern shows and movies, in fact about 0, because of flashy, noisy, fast-paced crap and secret signals everywhere. I mostly watch old movies and block all the flashy crap. Please tell your bosses this. I know I'm not the only one who hates it all.
Same here. Nowadays I instantly skip and block all flashy, noisy and overenthusiastic ads and canals from creators who just want to sell, likes and subs no matter what cost. Content and value of it is still the king in my world.
Loud and flashy is an instant turn off for me! I'll never understand why some people feel the need to shout to the camera. First shout, I'm off 😂
I liked the part where the guy after buying a $ 5000 car says “ El Agustin would be proud.. “ 😊😂❤

My brother is chronically unlucky. My parents keep saying things just happen to him. I think his choices have made a lot of problems for him. Creating a situation where he looks chronically unlucky.
It takes some luck to do well... WTF even if people do everything right they need luck to keep doing ok....
I really appreciate the dedication in each video you post. Passive income does have a way of liberating people, I remain eternally grateful to Elizabeth Wesley for her efforts that got me to this point, finally payed off my mortgage and all my debts, what more could I've asked for. Thanks for improving my portfolio.
Wow. I'm a bit perplexed seeing her been mentioned here also Didn’t know she has been good to so many people too this is wonderful. I stumbled upon one of her clients testimonies on CNBC news last week...

YEAH!!!!! 100,000 subbies I am so happy for you Austin : ) I think I've been here from darn near the beginning. Love the videos and all your commenters, I have learned a lot from both you and the community you've built here.
You are right about the people that can least afford it spending money on stupid things. Lottery, alcohol, cigarettes, etc.
While Lottery tickets are basically a tax on stupid people, it gives them a false hope which is better than no hope at all and money well spent.
yeahhh , but those " grab it"...... bye.
Congrats on 100K Austin ! You’ve worked your as* off, and deserve it ! Keep up the good work, and love your channel ! 🎊🍾🎉

Bad luck....it's not always the person's fault. My husband died at 30 and he was unlucky, and so was I!
Definitely not always!
Question, how much Life Insurance did your husband have? During the 1990's, when I was age 30 and, my salary was $48,000, my Life Insurance policies (both personal and from my employer) total about $300,000.
You were lucky. When my husband got cancer he was just let go of his job. It was a very difficult time@@transitengineer
So sorry.
Are you getting Social Security survivor benefit?
100k subscribers, well deserved❤️💯
& thank you Austin for making very thoughtful, useful videos. From a loyal listener and subscriber.
Thank you for this very thorough and common sense video.
I have listened to other videos like this. But you are the first person that I ever heard that said you can save more if you “increase “your income. Other videos don’t seem to say that like . 😮
. I never understood that. So I think you are right on !!!!!
It is like the irony that you have to spend money to make money. You cannot merely save money. A lot of financial experts talk about it and it is not wrong, but if you don't have a good -enough job so as to earn money to save then saving money is just not doable.
Or one needs to live under the right circumstances if they don't make much money. But your right yet they don't talk about that issue because they know they might loose viewers if they do!!!
I agree on most points but surprised no one mentioned: suppliments. I take them as part of alternative treatment for a medical condition to STAY AWAY from doctors and being on prescription train of taking lots of drugs with terrible side effects. It's effective for me and to get enough of the certain vitamins I would need to eat a ridiculous amount of foods (plus would make me sick), and notice when I do run out how badly I feel.
Congrats on your 100k subscribers. I am a proud subscriber. Thank you for the inspirational advice. Also, your speech cadence is fascinating!
Great episode! I really like your take on luck. We all feel unlucky sometimes, but this puts the whole thing into perspective. Thanks!

What's your opinion about seasonal jobs that are reality for so many? Quite often many seasonal jobs can give you a possibility to work your ass off and get a lot of money with relative ease and short peeiod of time but since it's seasonal, you easily end up using all that saved money for simply living expences during the period outside of the season. And back to starting point. No money left for any vacation either. Kinda double edged sword and you easily end up to this vicious circle where all the earned money are there for just making through the beginning of the next season...
Congrats on 100k
Congrats on 100K!!
Thank you! It feels nice! I feel like a big(ger) channel now!

Agree completely with the vices! Exactly.
Wow, I agree with your 10-top reasons 100 percent. Also, the "why", in my life was to save and invest for my future retirement which, I started at age 30, day one on my second job after college. Now in my early 60's, I retired last year ... Life is sweet (smile ... smile).

Can't save money because $100 is the only number everyone knows, everything costs $100 or more, so you can only do 3-4 things per check before it money runs out
Maybe if ypu lived in Bermuda
Yep and people like Austin want to blame the individuals not the income being too low for their expenses which they can't control.
The average monthly payment of a new car is over $1,000 per month not to mention several hundreds on insurance.
I pay EUR 550 ALL RISK including road assistance 24hr. PER YEAR. In expensive Netherlands ....bye. I pay EUR 0.00 per month for my Toyota that I bought cash as all around here normally do. Car loans are considered for xtreme losers....bye.

Living with other people is just disgusting, its a consequence of poorness.
Its vommunal. Americans are mal adjusted and anti-social because we dont know how to community or live together harmoniously.
I love having roommates. Just got to get a good fit and know yourself.
What an ignorant look on life
I house hack by choice and have had good tenants 90% of the time. Just make sure the tenant/roommate interviews go over your biggest pain points or pet peeves. House hacking is a great way to lower your expenses, get extra income, and socialize with others.
I think your comment is disgusting, btw
@@gunterweihe1166 if you live happy and with good people, congratulations, but you are an exception.
Most of the people are obliged to live with disgusting people just because of economic reasons. That is just horrible.
My case, i lived with people just to save money until i couldn't handle it anymore, then i bought a house.
Now people say that I'm silly because I don't rent 3 free rooms that I have in my house (very big house). But that money doesn't worth the uncomfortablility, okay live without working the whole life by handling random absurd people at home, it's a very big risk
@@timwidner8751 either you are lucky or you are very clever choosing people. Not my case when i was obliged to share but I didn't have too much options since the coming person was me,
There is something true, if you were the owner of the house and you were having a fix income enough to live according to your country you wouldn't rent your rooms so sharing is again a consequence of not having enough money to live thus...

Your mom is smart.

Right now as a batchelor its so difficult to survive
Unlucky for life...can also be who and what you surround yourself. It may be the support/not group even if it just affects your confidence and/or outlook on life. Don't get rid of them or fight with them, they are quite comfy with this...find new friends, outlets. Maybe the sour apples will learn from your having "Enough!". You do not have to say anything to them actually.
I set savings goals every year, but I always seem to fall short.
It could be a few things. Maybe you're not tracking your spending closely enough. Until you know where your money is going, it's hard to cut back.
🎉 congratulations 👍
