Money can buy you stuff and freedom. If you have tons of money, fortunately, you can afford to buy and enjoy both; however, if you are an average person with a modest amount of money, you can only afford to buy one--stuff or freedom. Most people choose to use their money to buy them stuff thinking that it will lead them to a life of happiness and abundance; however, it often leads them to a life of hardship and scarcity. The path to a happy, abundant life is choosing to use your money to buy freedom. Buying freedom comes with many benefits and in this video, I talk about 7 of those benefits.
1. You’re No Longer Living In The Past
When people choose to buy stuff instead of freedom, they end up making many bad financial decisions in the past like taking on debt, getting behind on bills, and not planning for the future that their present day self has to focus on. This forces them to live a life of regret focusing on the past. When you prioritize buying your freedom instead of stuff, you're not making bad financial decisions that negatively impact your past self and can enjoy the present more.
2. You’re No Longer Scared of The Future
Another side effect that comes from buying stuff over freedom is that it puts you in a tough financial spot where you are scared of the future. When you make bad financial decisions and don't prepare for the future, your future seems uncertain and this uncertainty brings you a lot of anxiety. When you prioritize buying your freedom instead of stuff, you make better financial decisions that make your future more certain. This allows you to feel more optimistic about the future.
3. Your Financial Life Is Less Cluttered
When you choose to prioritize stuff over freedom, your financial life becomes extremely cluttered where you are behind on past debts and bills and have trouble staying on top of current bills. This makes it very hard to get ahead in life. When you choose to prioritize buying your freedom instead of stuff, your finances become more simple, which allows you get stay on top of them and get ahead in life.
4. Your Physical Life Is Less Cluttered
Another con of obsessing over stuff and living a consumerist life is that it makes your physical life extremely cluttered. The average American's life is so cluttered where every room in their house has a bunch of stuff, which makes it hard to focus and not be stressed. When you choose to buy less stuff, you become more free to do what you want because your possessions don't overwhelm and stress you out.
5. You Have More Control Over Your Time
Freedom is the ability to have more control over your time. It's about doing what you want, when you want, where you want to do it. When you spend all of your money on stuff, you end up having less control of your time. However, when you prioritize buying your freedom, you can spend more time doing what you want in life.
6. You Can Take More Risks (that will probably work out)
Two years ago, I took the risk to quit my job to pursue CZcams full time and up to now it has worked out well for me where I am making more than I was at my previous job. The risk has worked out because I worked hard and have been extremely analytical, but also because I bought my freedom beforehand where I saved $80,000. This gave me time to learn, grow, and make mistakes. When you buy your freedom by having a large financial safety net and then take a risk, the chances of your risk paying off are a lot higher.
7. You Can Afford The Life You Want
There is nothing wrong with buying stuff and living a comfortable life. The problem, however, is that most people think they can achieve freedom in life by buying stuff first and freedom second, but it doesn't work that way. In order to achieve freedom in life while still living a comfortable life, you must first buy your freedom and then buy stuff. Once you have bought your freedom, you can use the money to buy the life you want.

57 yrs old. Wife and 2 teenagers. We were horribly in debt. Large mortgage, massive student loans, two auto loans, credit card debt. We were drowning. Discovered minimalism about 5 years ago. Wife and kids not totally on board, but I put my all into it. Now 5 years later, credit card debt free, cars paid off 3 years ago, so no more car payments, student loans paid off, and a year of living expenses in cash in the bank. Debt free except for our (still big) mortgage. That’s our only big expense. Now, I can let my foot off the gas, a lot. We enjoy going out to restaurants too much, but that’s okay. We’ve earned it. People, it can be done! Commit and go hard core. Just for a few years. The freedom and peace of mind is worth it!

You ABSOLUTELY have to say "no" more often. I’m a minimalist and have just what I need. Financial freedom is WAY more important to me. Say no to the constant online ads that you see, and say no to most of the stuff you see walking through stores, as well as junk food and junk drinks. I’ve been debt-free since 2005. Be intelligent about how you spend.

I think people buy stuff to compensate for what feels like powerlessness over their time: they must work to live and "freedom" seems like a far-off dream: maybe retirement, if they should ever enjoy one. Stuff can be satisfying in the short run. Unfortunately it usually leads to buying more and more and -- as you say -- needing to pay rent to store it somewhere. Crazy but here we are. Excellent job as usual and congratulations on the CZcams plaque: display it proudly!

Wow, this should be required viewing for young people. Too often people get conditioned that they need lots of stuff and subscriptions and it's hard to break the cycle later on in life.

My parents grew up as kids during the depression. Never let things go and when started doing well, stuff was a sign of success. The time it took to go through all that stuff was insane, costing me time. And time is not replaceable, stuff is. Dont leave your loved ones a bunch of useless stuff.
I’m getting close to being debt free…just two more big payments on a credit card. No more being a spendthrift…minimalism is much more fun to develop and enjoy.
The less material things i have the better i feel. I like throwing unneeded weight overboard...

I want to do the same...totally debt free at almost 58...the health insurance is my challenge...I am healthy but I used the health insurance to remain healthy with check up and preventive care...how are handling health care? And congratulations!
@snow40741 I am fortunate that I retired from a career with the Federal government, where they let you keep your health insurance at the same price in retirement. I was able to retire at age 56.5 after 33 years of service. Best of luck to you! Retirement is fantastic!

You got my number when, it comes to having "too much stuff" and, no place to organize and store it properly. Learned the Freedom lesson way to late, to stop working for the "Man" in my 50's. But, I made sure to be set financially during my retirement years. Now in my early 60's, I retired last year. Living in "sunny" Southern California, I now have a fully paid-off home, no automobile loans, no personal loans, and no credit card debit. My monthly bills can easily be paid with, just my pension and social security. So, no need to pull any money from my retirement accounts. In addition, my current Net Worth is $1.4 million (with half in the value of my home and, the other half from liquid assets). So, I can truly testify when, you have "Financial Freedom" ... Life is good (smile ... smile).

at 50 I've stopped buying stuff i don't need and have started declutter. in 3 months we were able to downsize our storage from a 10x15 to 10x10...going keep going
