I've been using four MoCA 2.0 adapters in my home for several years. Rock solid connection that is every bit as fast as gigabit ethernet. My home only had coax connections in all the rooms, so this was way easier than hard wiring ethernet throughout. These GoCoax unit are cheaper than the other units on Amazon.

Way back when, I stumbled onto Lon''s site when I was doing a search on how to successfully get internet connections throughout our 30 year old home with a minimum of wall destruction. I had never heard of MoCA technology (or Lon, for that matter - LOL). Lon's explanation was so clear, even an old dinosaur like me understood. When we originally built the house, I ran coax cable to every room from a central input hub. This allowed me to easily push the internet into every room using the MoCA technology. We have been using our MoCA connections for years with absolutely no issues. GREAT technology introduced to me by a GREAT purveyor of all things computer...

I just want to correct you. I have been using MocA for years now as after I became a cripple, I could no longer get upstairs to my bedroom and my router is indeed upstairs.
The speeds are NOT up/down. They are TOTAL, and SHARED between devices.
MoCa 2.0 is 500 max. that means all devices will share that 500 max speed. Which for me, having 3 set top boxes and my computer using moca, would net me 250 up 250 down on my pc with the rest split between the set top boxes.
MoCa 2.0 Bonded is 1000 max. again, 3 set top boxes (but newer versions as we got upgraded for free and the new boxes use faster moca standards), and my computer, results in about 600/600 max speeds at my pc.
MoCa 2.5 is 2500 max, which in my case should give me my full 1000/1000 fiber connection along side the set top boxes.
As far as the "TV" port/part of this adapter..... From the two adapters I've used previously, both Motorola and Actiontec, VERIZON set top boxes require MoCa to get TV GUIDE and ON DEMAND/DVR.... these functions WILL NOT WORK when plugging into the TV port side of the MoCa adapters, mainly because it will cause the MoCa adapter to downlink to the slower older MoCa spec of said set top boxes..... but also that means your pc is hogging the single lane, causing the set top box to not get a connection at all, while still forcing my computer to run 1.1...... I can't speak for GoCoax, but its possible the same will happen. IN THIS CASE, all you need is a 2 way splitter that is MoCa certified (5mhz to 1650mhz). This is how I solved this issue. The wall Coax goes to the splitter, one goes to my Motorola Bonded 2.0 box, and the other to my set top box for the living room TV. Works like a charm. This allows the moca adapter to have its own link to the host moca box, and the set top box to get its own link.
Which brings me to my next point. You can mix and match speeds of MoCa. So for example when I was running moca 2.0 NOT bonded. at the time the set top boxes were MoCa 1.0 and my purchased boxes (both host and the one at my pc) are baseline 2.0. My pc would get 2.0 connection confirmed in the firmware, and the set top boxes run their 1.0 speed. Each item gets their own link/lane to the host box. So you wont drop down to 1.0 just because another item is running 1.0. ONLY WHEN using the TV part of these MoCa boxes did I notice the speed for my PC dropping to the slower MoCa 1.0 from the Set Top Boxes (in this case, using the TV port forced my pc down to 1.0, proven again by the firmware when checking). And when I upgraded to 2.0 bonded, my set top boxes happened to have gotten upgraded which are now version 1.1, again, my pc is getting bonded 2.0 connection, and set top boxes are running their 1.1. granted, all speed is shared as I spoke above.
FOR THOSE QUESTIONING GAMING. I am a gamer at heart, MoCa is lightyears better than WiFi, and obviously Ethernet is best. BUT, you wont notice the added latency. On ethernet playing on new york server I would have 5 ping. Because I have MoCa now, I get 9 ping. NOT A HUGE DIFFERENCE. Chicago used to be 25-35, now its 29-39. Again, not a huge gain. WAY BETTER than wifi with packets disappearing, poor jitter, and dropping signal.
ALSO NOTE, if you are on VERIZON FIBER (aka fiber to the home) you DO NOT need the encryption in the home.... because the MoCa signal cannot leave the house. If you have comcast or another COAX based cable tv/internet service, then you will want to get a moca filter to stop the moca from leaving the home. The only time you want encryption is in a business environment as anyone could bring their own moca box and then get onto your secure network.

      @goblinphreak2132 Před 4 lety

@@srdricks468 the real question is, why do you need encryption? it does literally nothing for home users. its the dumbest feature.
      .
"""MoCA security for cable Internet service comes from either of the following:
Add a PoE filter where the coax cable enters your home. This prevents your MoCA signal from being transmitted to one of your neighbors.
      .
Program all your MoCA devices with the same MoCA security key.""""
      .
as long as you have a PoE (point of entry) filter, the encryption is literally useless.

I just installed a couple of these. Be aware that XFinity X1 devices, even the simplest streaming device, is a MoCa device. It would prohibit the synch between the 2 GoCoax devices. If the X1 device was interrupted, then the other two joined, until the X1 device was reset in the middle of the night by Comcast. The solution was to put a second Point of Entry (POE) MoCa filter on the X1 box.

Thanks for the video! I currently live in a 3 story townhouse and 3 of these completed coverage for me. One thing I want to mention for anyone else doing this who is not into networking, your house might have coxial wiring but they may not be connected to each other! I had to call my ISP and they came to install a splitter to connect all the coax. Also the technician had no idea what the moca adapters were, he kept telling me that they won't work because they all have a different MAC address and only one can be in my household. He thought they were mini modems!

    • @wagnerfsj
      @wagnerfsj Před 3 lety

I had a similar situation happen to me when I bought my house. I spent countless hours trying to figure why the two devices were not communicating until I finally thought about checking the cable box and voila: all the connections from all rooms were connected to a 8-port splitter with no input from the main coax (?!). So it was just a matter of adding an extra coax cable between the two splitters and it worked like a charm!

Using 2 pairs at home to back-haul traffic from meshed WiFi APs, they're rock solid, and fairly priced (much cheaper than running new Ethernet cables throughout the home). Only caveat: they only support 1GbE on the Ethernet side, even though they support 2.5GbE on the MoCA side. I get it, the 2.5GbE is the max throughput for the whole MoCA network and you can connect plenty of these to the same network and effectively get an aggregate speed of 2.5GbE, but when you use them as point-to-point devices for traffic back-haul, it essentially caps the speed to 1GbE, so the benefit over MoCA 2.0 is nil. Would have loved for GoCoax to offer a version using a 2.5GbE Ethernet chip like say the RTL8226, that would have massively unlocked the potential of the device. Yes, the cost would have gone up, but not massively, the Realtek 2.5GbE chips are cheap, I would have been happy to pay an extra $20 per device to get 2.5GbE back-haul speeds.

Bought 3 of these base on your recommendation. Got home networking at our new home up and running with them while I figured out the Ethernet situation. Turned out phone lines were done with cat 5E so i ended up reterminating those in 6 rooms and eliminating one of these MOCA adapters in the office. Where the TV is I don't have an ethernet jack though so until I run a wire there I am still using gocoax and it is working great! Such a cool technology!

I use MOCA adapters in place of wireless for my streaming devices connected to my TV. They are rock solid compared to wireless and running Ethernet wouldn’t be worth the hassle. I use an HD Homerun Prime with Plex to stream Live TV, so this is a great way to keep the bandwidth demands off of wireless and eliminate buffering. Best thing... connect these adapters to a cheap 4-5 port switch and you can connect your streaming device, TV, video game console, etc with just one MOCA adapter and keep them all off wireless. Bandwidth isn’t a problem and latency is low compared to wireless.

Where your service enters your house or the junction box on the outside of your house you will need to install a POE (point of entry) filter to keep you MOCA from propagating to your neighbors. I have 2 Motorola MOCA adapters and each one came with a POE filter. I have used MOCA to connect two locations where running a CAT5e cable was not feasible but coax was installed when the house was built. A co-worker connected his downstairs to upstairs using MOCA. Funny thing is I found out about MOCA by accident. I was in Best Buy and they had them on the shelf. Being a curious techie I picked up the box and the rest is history. Actiontech makes a Wifi extender (AP) that connects via MOCA the model # is WCB6200Q. Beware there is an earlier MOCA 1.0 version that will limit connectivity to 100Mbps.

Man it would've been nice for these to have 2.5 gigabit Ethernet ports. With multi gigabit networking becoming more prevalent, the benefit of moca 2.5 would be realized by more people. At least they're cheaper then the more popular moca 2.0 adapters on Amazon, which is nice. Here's to hoping that more moca 2.5 adapters show up with faster Ethernet ports.

Specially loved the encrypted bandwidth test. I believe the speed did not get affected as these MOCA standard does hardware-based encryption, which is awesome!. These MOCA devices beat simple short haul fiber connections pricing by A LOT! Back in the Day there were Coax based networking but the speed was 10MB/s (Anyone remember ThinNet and ThickNet). I personally believe MOCA is going to disrupt Multi-mode fiber at least for small office environments. Hopefully the big network players get on the MOCA bandwagon so we could start seeing network switches with built-in 2.5 MOCA ports. Sorry if I get too nerdy, is just that I'm genuinely excited to learn that Coax is back with a "Gigab-engeance " LOL

Sounds good but I have 2 questions. I recently replaced my cable boxes (3) with Roku but still get TV from Spectrum (using the Spectrum app on Roku). I have 6 runs of coax to various rooms from the main splitter in the basement (where the cable feed comes in). 5 are now dark (nothing attached) but 1 is still live for the internet feed (from Spectrum). If I understand, I could use one of these devices in the den (where the modem / router are). I would go from the wall to the GoCoax. I would then go from the "TV out" on the GoCoax to my modem. Then I would use an ethernet cable from my router (LAN port) back to the GoCoax.
Step 2. In the living room (where I would want to put the second GoCoax) I would connect the GoCoax to the Coax outlet in that room and connect the device I wanted "hard-wired" in that room via an ethernet cable.
Here are the questions... 1. The coax outlet in the den would be able to handle the feed to the router AND the feed back of the ethernet to the coax wiring in the house?
    2. The feed into the house goes into a splitter with 6 outlets (one for each run). I still need the feed from the cable company to go into the "in" jack on the splitter and the run to the den attached to one of the "out" jacks. This is going to work even though the feed from the device in the den is NOT going into the "in" on the splitter in the basement?
Great explanation otherwise and thank you!

$59 a piece sounds cheap for those. A pair of Actiontec would set you back $149 depending on where you get them. If you have a Verizon Actiontec router you may already have MoCA adapters and not realize it. You would need another adapter or router if you only have one. Make sure the store you get these from will take them back if you can't for some reason get them to work.

I've been doing a lot of research on whether a moca network would work at my house, currently have cable internet (comcrap). According to amazon reviews the cable tv pass-through also works directly to a modem effectively injecting the line with moca. I've been looking for an answer to this and to how splitters might work on a single coax line (because I only have one line at the point that i could attach ethernet to the moca device), and have found varying answers and nothing much conclusive. Thought you might like to know, I think your viewers might also appreciate that info.

Did you ever test older devices with multiple newer ones? You tested 2.5 to 2.0 (1.3gbit max) at 12:30 and got 900mbit, but didn't seem to simultaneously test a bunch more? My impression was that when your 1.3gbit has 900mbit being used (70% of max speed), you only have 30% of the "transmission time" remaining - which if a link is 3.6gbit, is probably still enough for 900mbit+, since 3.6 * 0.3 is 1.08gbit - but what if you mixed an older 200mbit adapter in? If you try to push 1gbit over two MOCA 2.5 adapters and max out the older 200mbit adapter, how does the available speed get split? I'd think the older adapter would "tie up the coax lines" longer and drain 33-50% of the speed, leaving just barely enough for the newer adapters to go full throttle, but leaving the older adapter with a severe performance hit? If you had a mix of adapter speeds, it'd be the worst, since the MOCA 2.0 adapters already use a lot of their "transmission time" to reach full speed. With mostly 2.5 devices, it seems to be less of an issue?

You also need a MoCA terminator at your point of entry in your house; keeping in mind that many MoCA distibution amps have MoCA filters already in them such as the PPC-9m-u/u-ps and the PCT -VC-F19AUPI.
The popular MoCA Commscope units provided by Comcast, Spectrum etc usually DO NOT have terminators in them. You would need to check to see if your cable provider installed a terminator at your outside box, otherwise buy one for $5 and install on the cable inlet on your distribution amp.
    Unpowered splitters suck. Avoid them.

Probably a dumb question given filter placement has been covered before, but I am just starting to look into a MoCA network in my apartment and I found the main cable drop which is split 8 ways (2 coax drops per each of 4 rooms). One of the lines on the splitter has a filter on it, but it is not on the main line. I believe this is how the ISP/Cable company installed it for multi-room DVR. Do I need to move the filter to the main line leading into the splitter, or can I leave it on one of the lines after the split?

the unit does encryption, so no need to created a tunnel, which is what a VLAN is. I'd check the repeater type/taps that the building owner or cable Co. installed at your apt. complex, as those might not support beyond 1000Mhz....

    • @johnpoldo8817
      @johnpoldo8817 Před 3 lety

@@lakorai2 Actually, to avoid Internet theft I would not use the cable company’s Internet but rather another vendor who allows distribution. Legal is very important. Using a mesh system to share internet from apartment to apartment IS illegal because they don’t care if it is copper or radio transmission, they will prosecute. Cable companies are despicable money grabbers.

I just wasted half a day today trying to get these goCoax adapter to work. First of all, the manual for the encryption pairing is a joke. It says "press the MPS button on the two devices", I google and there is no answer of how to do it, am I suppose to press them BOTH at the SAME TIME? I press and hold the button, but like you said, there is no indication of when to run over to the other room to pair. I was running around the house like a mad person to try the encryption work, and I gave up. I then let it run in unencrypted mode. When I stream a movie from my office NAS to the living, a few minutes in and the adapter got disconnected. The adapter in my office has the "Moca" light goes dark. Google the hell out of it and no one has answer. At the admin page, the Link Status is "Down". I want to take a hammer and smash this thing! I emailed the support, given that it's a weekend, I will have to leave all the cable all over the place until I get answer next week. I wish this is a plug and play device.

"First of all, the manual for the encryption pairing is a joke."
"I wish this is a plug and play device."
I agree. The manual isn't a manual at all. It's got 1 diagram, how to connect to a computer. That's it. It doesn't explain how to connect them to the router/modem (a diagram would help), do I connect it before the modem or after, how does a router factor in, which plugs go where, it doesn't say anything about splitters, it doesn't say shit about a POA filter, the manual is incomplete...
Try this to check the devices work to begin with:
      1. Connect adapter1 ethernet cable to router LAN (1 of 4 ports).
      2. Connect adapter1 coax out ("TV") cable to adapter2 coax in ("MOCA").
      3. Connect adapter2 ethernet cable to PC.
      4. Plug in power adapters.
      5. Change LAN IP address on computer (TCP/IPv4) in Windows/Mac to: 192.168.254.10. Subnet: 255.255.255.0.
      6. Open browser. Go to: 192.168.254.254. (manual explains this)
      7. This should let you check if they're working to begin with with your coax.
      8. Now try moving one to another area. Splitters need to be over >1000Mhz (specific MOCA splitters).
I haven't gottem them to work across 2 rooms either...

@@LonSeidman Support got back to me, it's very frustrating. They tell me WHAT to do, but never explain HOW to do. A lot of emails go back and forth. They wanted me to connect the adapter directly to each other and go to the management site to check the link rate. They never mention that I have to set the computer to a static IP address in order for me to be able to get to the 192.168.254.254 management site. Anyway, just be warn, this is not as easy as it seams, too many failing points. There are different ways to connect your cable modem depends if your modem is DOCSIS 3.0 or DOCSIS 3.1. If the modem is DOCSIS 3.1, then you need a coax splitter, if it's DOCSIS3.0, the TV out of the adapter can be connected to the modem and reduce the use of splitter (remove a potential failer point). My whole house splitter is the 5-1000Mhz type, so I need to buy a new splitter. But then, I still never get answer from support why I was able to stream movie for a few minutes then get disconnect if the splitter is at fault.

Powerline works BEST when you install them on 2 electrical circuits that do not have anything plugged into them. Which is virtually impossible to do in most homes.
#1 all the electrical outlets in your average 10x10 room are all on the same breaker. So in a 10x10 room you should only have 4 electrical outlets. All 4 are connected to one breaker. So that right there kills the efficiency of the powerline adaptor because you WILL have things plugged into any of those 4 outlets which are pulling CURRENT which is what HURTS the powerline signal .. It does work but your speed will suffer once current starts to flow on that circuit.
To find 2 dedicated electrical outlets (powerline transmitter & receiver) going back to the breakers with NOTHING else plugged in where you NEED it is virtually impossible ....
Even with your modem plugged into the same electrical circuit where your transmitter is, because it WILL BE in the same room, that will hurt your speed. Your receiver will be in another room on the other side of the house plugged in along with a TV or Game system or desktop on the same electrical circuit, that will also hurt your speed.
So this is used if you cannot get a cat5 wire over to where you need it because you don't know how or you can't do it because you don't see a pathway or you can run the wire but just don't know how to terminate the ends ...
There is ALWAYS a way to get a wire to where you want it, its just how pretty you want it to look or how much trouble you want to go thru to get that wire ran ..
I got a 10x24 shed in my back yard and i got 120V 20A power with Cat5E and RG6 solid copper out to it. 150FT from my switch and 140FT from the breaker ... Up the walls, thru and across the entire attic, conduit on side of house to a junction box, then buried in conduit out to the shed to another junction box and into the shed... Got my cable box (fed with RG6) with 40 inch smart TV (fed by LAN) and my Laptop also fed by LAN, CAT5E split in 2 pairs.
Powerline and MoCA no thanks ... I'll run the actual wire i need :-)

You would connect a cable between the wall coax outlet and the MoCA port on the device. Then you would connect the other cable between the router/modem to the TV port on the device. The TV port is just a pass through for your service provider. MoCA uses a higher frequency around 1250 MHz and above (I can't remember off the top of my head), while the TV and internet from your provider uses frequencies below that. So even though it says TV on the port, its really more of a TV/Modem port. I use mine in the way described and it works great.
