  • A complete honest review of the BMW 640d by Car Mad Dad who’s actually owned one for 18 months. No need to watch any other reviews, everything you need to know is right here.
This video is how Car Mad Dad was born! Trying to find a review for myself and coming a cross a distinct lack of video content about the BMW 640d I thought I’d create one with honest opinion an put it out there.
So, here is my opinion; the good, the bad about the car.
Everything from suspension and toe in set up through to back seat leg room!
Why did I send the car to Motech Performance for springs and spacers?
    Should I spec adaptive suspension?
Is the gran coupe a better all-rounder? I’ll let you decide!
If you too have owned a BMW 640d do you agree with me or not? Share your thoughts.
    Thank you for watching

First. I try in english as best as i can. Nice review. I have a 640D carbon black m-pack and with all of the options almost and the beautiful Bower and wilkinson system. A real earwurm and eyecatcher in the car and also from outside. A black frontgrill is also a beautiful upgrade to do. I lowered the car with ac schniter springset, a difference in drive and looks. I have the car now 5 years and i am still in love with the car. I still adore to drive this car and i am still excited. The beautiful thing is that the car is still today an eyecatcher in the streets, people are still looking at this car, more then a normal 911 porsche or many other cars. My car is most of the times also shiny, i never go to a car wash, but i do it myself. I have also a beautiful exhaust sytem that sounds fantastic. Done by specialists in Belgium. Unbelievable what those guys can do. Many M4 or porsche drivers gave me already copmliments about it. This car could be a classic in 10-15 years. The succeder is the 8 series. And i will buy sucgh one normally as next car. But i am not in a hurry, because this 6 serie still looks awesome and up to date. The 8 series is to early. The 6 could easy doing another 2 years. Still awesome in every way.

Great video. I have the 640d gran coupe. That does have folding seats and is quite practical, considering that it's a six series. I also opted for the eibach springs. Mine originally had 19s on. So I've put the m5 20 inch 343m wheels on. They fit great. But I did have to change the tyres. Best car all round for me. Ticks all the boxes and puts a smile on my face. Thanks for sharing yours. 👍

I have a carbon black 2012 640D. I’ve had it 6 years now and bought it when it had 19,000 miles. It’s the best car I’ve ever owned. I’ve now done 145k in mileage and still to this day I’ve never had to pay for any repairs, it’s simply bullet proof.
However a sad day looms, I love the car, but I’m also a family man and my youngest daughter who is approaching 5, her legs are getting longer and it’s becoming uncomfortable when I’ve got the kids with me. I’m looking to maybe part-ex for a white X5 M sport with black alloys, it looks nice and is well equipped, but I’m not really looking forward to giving up this beautiful car for a dad car.

I have the gran coupe 640D Msport (Plus, so heads up, harmon kardon, 20inch wheels, plus variable damper control so have the Comfort +, surround cameras, which make parking a dream) and back seats go down in mine, however, yesterday i took wife, mum and dad to heathrow (parents holidaying in Sri Lanka!) with 3 suitcases, 4 hand luggage, and managed to fit it all in the car, in the centre had one of the suitcases, but all in comfort on 100mile trip to airport!! and yes it is very capable, bit of a sleeper car if you ask me, as a few merc 500CLS have tried racing me and they have come off worse!!

I bought a new 640d convertible three years ago when I upgraded from a 2011 320d convertible. Put a huge smile on my face from the moment I first drove it. It’s a fantastic GT car and I’ve driven it up on down the country several times. Select eco pro mode and it’ll much up the miles all day long and return a healthy mpg. I drive up the A59 to Harrogate quite often, usually with the roof down, weather permitting, and it’s brilliant on those twist country roads. Slip it into Sport mode and it’ll overtake lines of lorries effortlessly with no drama. The acceleration is awesome for a diesel and delivers all the power I’m ever gonna need. Yes there are more powerful cars out there and yes, there are more economical cars out there, but as a package of power verses economy, there’s nothing out there to beat that 3 litre Diesel engine. It’s a big car but the surround cameras make parking a breeze. Yes the back seats aren’t very practical but I drove 4 people from Lancashire to the Isle of Wight in relative comfort but you don’t buy a 4 seater convertible for practicality. The boot is very spacious, even with the roof down, as some convertibles only have a boot for somewhere to store the roof, but you can actually get suite cases in it. On the whole I’ve had three enjoyable years with my 640d and apart from a replacement roof sensor which was swapped under warranty, the car has had no reliability issues whatsoever. The biggest running expense has been replacing the 20 inch run flat tyres at roughly £300 a corner and it seems to go through quite a lot, although that could be down to my enthusiastic driving 😊. I’ve had no regrets buying the car, even though it has depreciated quite badly, but if you want a car that holds its value look elsewhere and if you’re looking for an investment then buy a house. If you want a big GT that’s fun to drive and practical for everyday life, this is the car for you.

May I ask you how old you are?
I'm Considering to purchase a 640d (2017) as a Gran Coupe but not sure if I am too young for this car (near 27 years old). The main reason for this car are my long runs (driving around 20-25k per year) and i think this is defently a great car for long runs on the motorway.
Are you still driving with 43 mpg?

I think what is notable in the later models is the idrive and the later tech. 17 plate you can add Apple car play if it’s not already installed. The later shape is I think is prettier and certainly the later turbo diesel is remarkably economical whilst still powerful and quick. Still think a very underrated car. Larger wheels with low profiles provide a bit more of a bumpy ride. My earlier 6 series I removed the run flats and it was a far more comfortable ride

Nice review , i plan to buy similar to travel from Czech republic to Germany (900km) on a weekly basis , compared to Mercedes 320CDI, Audi A6 or A8 and Jaguar 3.0 D , what do you think ?

Hi Pablo - thank you for your message and comments.
Depending on a few preferences that you have, I PERSONALLY would discount the Merc 320cdi and Jaguar as i'm not a fan of either brand. The Jag in particular does not have a place on your shortlist for me!
The Merc and Audi might be easier on the suspension but may also have you asleep sooner!
A6 (estate) or 630d for mme on your list... But i think you can guess my winner!
Correct spec = more smiles per miles than any of the competition!

      Hi George.
No! The car came with dunlop tyres on (which were awful)... Upgraded to Goodyear (slightly thicker tyre wall - still run flat) and that did enough for me as I actually prefer keeping the run flats on incase I have an unfortunate puncher and am a long way from home!

Thanks. My 2016 640d GC sometimes feels like a boat - more Mercedes than BMW disappointingly (having owned 10 different BMW’s). I don’t have VDC either. Also seriously considering eibach springs after your review. Any downsides following spring upgrade?
