- Captive panda cub Yuanzai meets her mother in an emotional first encounter since birth, in China. The giant panda cub was born on July 6 to female panda Yuan Yuan and male Tuan Tuan at the Taipei Zoo.
She currently lives in an incubator after accidentally sustaining a minor leg injury when the mother panda tried to grasp and lick the baby.
After the reunion, zoo staff said Yuan Yuan's behaviour made them believe she will be a good mother, and it won't be long before Yuanzai is put in her mother's care. Report by Andrea Lilly.

It says that she accidentally injured the panda, she may have seen other panda mothers lick and care for their cubs but she doesn't know how careful she should be, since she was never handled as sweetly by her own mother.

read the description before you make some ignorant comment about animal cruelty. the mother accidentally injured the baby when she tried to grasp and lick it, and the baby is living in an incubator while she recovers from her injuries. these encounters through bars are attempts to allow the mother to gradually get used to the presence of her newborn, so as to not hurt her again in the future.
Excellent comment. It is evident from the footage that the caregivers needed to keep the little one out of the cage for safety precautions. It was neither to torture the baby or its mother, but rather to protect the fragile cub.
The moment when they reunited, Mother Panda must have been asking forgiveness when she accidentally injured her Baby Panda. They are both adorable.
The cage is for security because pandas are clumsy and the mom has hurt the baby once. The worker has to let them get use to each other gradually. Some empty-headed people just start cursing "WTF It's so cruel" without a single thought. Even if you can't understand Chinese subtitles you can still guess the worker did this for a reason. Or you just think you're more professional than the worker?

For those who are saying how the baby should be immediately given back to its mother, you need to understand that pandas are basically not very good parents. Mothers are always rolling over their cubs in their sleep, being too rough with them, or even forgetting about them sometimes, and in this case, the mother injured the baby's leg. So this is why a lot of them are living in conservations and why the baby wasn't given back immediately.
People understand now that pandas generally have no idea what they're doing with their kids, and that's why a lot of them are living in conservations--if they were left in the wild, they'd definitely go extinct not just from poachers, but from themselves just being bad parents.
This. There are a lot of people who just assume that humans are being asses to pandas, and many don't stop and think why they're in conservations besides avoiding poaching.

Exactly! Whenever people assume all Chinese eat dogs it offends me because my godfather is Chinese/Taiwanese and assumptions like that are racist. The only time he ever ate dog was because his father dropped him off in a foreign country without ANYTHING to take care of himself. Luckily he was brought back to America or else he would have been screwed.
Fact remains that they did separate the mother and the child, they're even holding the child infront of the mother without giving her son back.

Read the description text folks if you have questions. Baby got hurt accidentally by mom rolling on its leg. Baby was cared for by vets. Now zoo keepers are making sure that mommy wants the baby and won't eat it, crush it, etc. They are checking reaction of mother to baby after a separation, to see if her maternal instincts kick in. Once she is sufficiently 'maternal' they will reunite the two. Baby's squeaks arouse the maternal instincts.
The people are not being cruel. You have to be sure mom won't hurt baby again. Because Pandas are endangered. They have very few babies in wild or captivity and every single panda baby must be protected to the max. Its all good, and the Chinese are doing a good job in this video. Do not criticize them. Praise them for this work!

The reason this particular baby panda was put in an incubator in the first place was because her mother wounded her after she was born. She's three thousandth her mother's weight, cannot even crawl yet, nor can she see, so there is a credible danger of the mother hurting her again in some way if they are allowed to touch.
So do pandas in the wild (are there any?!) often accidentally hurt their babies?
There are, and it's a risk with any large animal, by accident or otherwise. They could have lost their own mothers young to not be able to learn by example (as with many zoo animals and wild animals who lost parents to hunting).
Other species of carnivorous bears do kill their young if they are deemed unfit to survive. I don't think this is what happened because the mother panda obviously cares a lot for her cub, so it may just have been an accident due to it being her first birth. Nevertheless, with a species as high-profile as the panda the zoo would want to be very careful.
I've wondered about that with Mei Mei who they have in Video Cam baby born August 2020.
It's neat to see.
I always get scared mom will accidentally lay down and squash/ hurt baby, etc. But Mei Mei is a good mother- she takes care of baby 24/7. But I could see how it can happen. Baby is very demanding. Mom is so tired. Baby is so small. I can see how accidents can happen.

@@selah7779 yes I wonder too. Human mothers have accidentally fallen asleep while breast feeding and rolled over on baby and crushed them -- it is horrifying and sad. So it must happen but I see animals with babies all the time knowing somehow how to not injure delicate babies (like cats carrying kittens by the nape without actually wounding them.) Wouldn't they know not to be too rough? And worse...is the reason they don't know bettter because they are not in the wild with other pandas, where they would see how others act around kids? That would be sad if this is abnormal because of being caged.

Yes. Panda looks cute and harmless. But just like any wild animals, they "kill" their babies mostly because they lack the bond and more importantly the abilities to nurish offsprings (you heard giant panda kills one of her babies because she could not feed both?). And this is one of the many reasons why they are so scarce and facing distinction. And it is also a reason why human step in and help build the bond. Some people here are really too naive. You think you can raise a panda just like a pet at home. And you think the zoo staff from Taiwan in the video are morons.

Actually, Them killing their babies is actually an advantage, not a reason why they are so scarce. they are endangered because of human hunting and the females being picky about their mates. The weaker, less suitable cub usually dies, which is basic natural selection. if its too weak to feed, the mother will kill it to ensure the health of the more likely cub to live. Humans do this very same thing. when operating on 2 conjoined twins, surgeons identify twin A and twin B, twin A with a higher chance of survival than twin B. if something goes wrong, they ignore twin B and focus all of their resources on twin A. its not cruel or mean, its just nature. What would be cruel if both cubs die simple because the mother is trying to help the weaker one but she simply cant. also, killing the weaker baby helps prevent deadly diseases from spreading to the rest of the pandas - which would be more harmful to the population.
Pandas and bears have been raising their offspring easily for millions of years but require protection from human caused environment change that they are not able to adapt well to. Instead of letting both the cubs die due to food or sustainment problems, they will kill one and leave the other. Simple survival logic.

it may seem a bit restrained, but they have to keep the baby in the incubator and to do health checks, especially since there aren't exactly too many panda births until recently. the baby will be with the mother after a small time period :D

The baby had an injured leg shortly after birth and keepers were caring for her until she was better and able to withstand some of the panda cub-mother play bouts. The cub is with her mother full-time now, has been for a long time, and is a round, happy little girl getting into all sorts of mischief with mama.

The panda mom accidentally hurt the baby during birth, to avoid infection the Taipei Zoo had to separate baby to heal the wound completely before reuniting them; by the time mom and baby were separated for more than a month, the caretakers needed to get the mom acquaint with baby again so they needed to take steps before placing baby back with mom completely, the baby grew up happily with mom shortly after.

Yes, but the one in the video was about 2~3 weeks old. A new born panda cub are born almost hairless, blind and deaf, & totally in red and usually weight around 100 to 200gm at birth. Their black patches start to appear in about a week old.
The smallest cub at birth ever in captive breeding is only 42.8gm, she is 成浪/Cheng Lang, born on 11 Jun 2019 by mother 成大/Cheng Da in Chengdu Panda Breeding & Research Centre, China.
