Call of Duty Modern Warfare released last week on PS4, Xbox One and PC. It is Infinity Ward's attempt to bring back a classic subseries and take it to the next level. While there's obviously the massively popular multiplayer mode as well as spec ops, in this video I will fully focus on the single player campaign. I discuss its missions, story spoilers, the ending and ultimately compare it to the other games in the franchise. Is Modern Warfare the best entry we've seen in years? Here are my thoughts.

My problem with general barkov is the fact that him being there is never explained the whole reason behind the russian invasion isn't explained. I always said if they wanted to provide a better realistic story ensure one thing. That the bad guys are gray morally. Because the gray moral field ensures they become convincing and in a sense relatable. I read a lot that the invasion is likely a bit based on both american invasion into the middle east as well as the russian invasion of Chechnya which is fine but show it. Show a reason for the invasion make it clear Barkov isn't just camping out there with the russian military.
Plus I found the focus on Barkov to be wrong in general or at least he shouldn't be seen as much in this first game, rather they should have kept him around for later on like with Shepard. Build him as the calculating force the russians depend on to lead their army when most needed. Yet give him relations to ultranationalists make it clear he doesn't agree with the current state of russia and this is why he also preforms war crimes during the urzikstan occupation.
Instead the wolf should have played the bigger role in this, make it clear that while the russian are indeed responsible for making him and his terror group the acts he commits now no longer justify it. I dont know it just feels like they missed so many opportunities in order to go with just as simple a plot as possible. Not letting their playerbase try to use their own thinking hat to understand something more complex

Thanks for bringing up your desire for the old 'Big Blockbuster' moments. I noticed a few missed opportunities - chasing The Butcher through the streets brought me back to chasing down Makarov's bullet manufacturer in Brazil. But hunting The Butcher was a lot less of an exciting chase and much more of an artificial chase that didn't last long enough. Rushing back to the house with the Wolf after lighting flares to see the men in the field had me anticipating a high-speed carchase that would inevitably end in us being unable to recapture him for the time being, but it would've ended on an adrenaline high. Instead, it ends with our characters staring at a hole in a wall, not taking action, but discussing. It doesn't bring about the excitement and adrenaline-pumping action that I've been used to with the original trilogy. I just felt underwhelmed.

Well said sir. I have to hand it to you it was a great critique of the story. However, in my opinion I can see that MW2 was your first MW game and it will never be replaced in your heart as your number 1. In my case I love MW1. I really love how you showed the epic blockbuster moments of previous titles. It made me smile with satisfaction that you pointed it out. Maybe my comment on this video would be that you stated that you assume the viewers already finished the game but you went and narrated the story from the ground up anyway. I believe the gist of your video was delayed for a moment at that point but I was glad I stayed longer until the end. Thank you for this video. I love the MW series. All of it. This review will be remembered.

It was... Meh. Alright, I guess, looked pretty, kinda left me underwhelmed. I think I sold it off like a month later.
... Actually, wait, there is ONE thing I remembered.
Wasn't there a point where it turned out that the US designated Farah's army as hostile terrorists... While Farah was in the same room as them in a military compound, and they just... Let her walk out with one of their own men who straight up tells his superior officer that hes defecting to her cause?
... I've forgotten the majority of the campaign and everything that happened, but that one scene STILL confused me lmao

Another great analysis! Thank you for your work, it’s thought provoking as always. Just some thoughts. I feel like you’re right to withhold judgement on some of the narrative decisions they make herein, as it does indeed seem like greater payoffs are coming. Beyond that, I actually really enjoyed this particular campaign, because I feel like it really had something meaningful to say about war. Spoilers for the game’s story coming. It has running themes throughout which show up in dramatic ways. Specifically the themes of home and moral ambiguity of combat. These themes are most prominent in the levels where you play as Farah, and in the level clean house. The game deconstructs the common idea of a terrorist by showing us Farah and hadirs childhood. They show us how the trauma of having your home invaded, your father murdered by a foreign soldier, your mother killed in a bombing by a foreign military, all those things are part of what create a “rebel”, “freedom fighter” or “terrorist.” the actions of other countries ARE responsible in part for creating these rebels. It then goes on to describe the difference between a terrorist and a freedom fighter by differentiating between Farah and Hadir (and Al-Qatala) by showing us methods they use that cross a clear line and why they do that. Hadir feels like the fight is a struggle for power, and ever increasing displays of violence is necessary to control the situation, even gas attacks. He deals with his trauma by trying to subjugate others through power and control, so he can’t be hurt again (this is also a great deconstruction of toxic masculinity by the way). Contrast with Farah, whose goal is not to control others, but to protect her own people (evidenced oftentimes in her conversations with Alex). She deals with her trauma by protecting others in order to defend them from the hurt she has already experienced. War, and what measures are fair to take to defend oneself, are often morally ambiguous. Hadir crosses a line clearly, but that line is also placed in front of the player at various times in the game. Particularly with Kyle Garrick aka Gaz, the player is forced to acknowledge and deal with this question. In the level clean house, who is an enemy is constantly ambiguous. Is that woman reaching for a gun, or her baby? Is this person really a hostage, or are they faking? Now that I have just had to fatally shoot this woman’s husband is she attacking me out of grief for her husband, or because she had planned to attack all along? Have I made more enemies by just trying to defend myself or my country? They continually make the player ask, am I crossing a line here? Am I crossing the same line as the terrorists I’m fighting by invading someone’s home? The parallels to Farah’s story are tremendous. Secondly, they place this line in front of the player during the interrogation of the butcher. Giving the player the option to partake or not in interrogating him by threatening his family. Again, paralleling Farah’s story, how do you think the butcher’s son feels to see his father gunned down in front of him (if you chose to cross that line)? What is that going to DO to him? Have we just created another Farah, or another Hadir, or another Al-Qatala member or leader by traumatizing this boy in that way (not to mention the wife)? In that scene, The game clearly communicates the unsettling feeling of violence against a defenseless target and what that does to a family. This game has something great to say. To ask the player, even when someone has done unspeakable evil, things that are unforgivable, to you, can you look past that person to see the consequences of violence? To see how meeting the butchers violence with your own violence by killing him, unnecessarily, can do more harm than good? This is a brilliant wuestion about the nature of modern warfare. And it’s a great way of weaving together gameplay and the message of the game as a whole.

I couldn't agree more bro this game was all hype and zero replayability. Personally i think they didn't have the balls to make a gory campaign or weren't allowed to. Cause if you shoot someone in the face with a shotgun they're face is going to get disfigured at the least. This game wasn't gory at all. And i get it there's alot of sensitive people out there and if you do that you have to make adult only. Basically it all comes down to money that's what pissed me off

    • @Darknight-vr9ft
      @Darknight-vr9ft Před 3 lety +1

You can literally kill a baby, price doesn’t save a dude in a bomb vest, civilians are getting gunned down in front of you multiple times, and while you guide someone to safety, you kill a kids mother in front of him, you save a woman as a hostage and she tries to kill you anyways.... idk there are plenty of moments. In multiplayer there is complete dismemberment but I know that’s not campaign related

I wonder if Activision has say or sets a limit for how long the campaign can be because it felt rushed like they had to mash a full sized story into a short campaign. It's very hard to tell a memorable complete story in just 14 missions. It would be unfortunate for someone's creativity to be snuffed out by business

  • @wernersgaminglounge5235

I think the story was told more immersively due to the short cutscenes that filled the gaps. The missions with more stealthier and slower approach had you consider your options much more than just run and gunning. Also the larger variety of factions reflects modern world conflicts which truly aren't black and white but with multiple militias and global powers intervening in a conflict (You mentioned it confusing to have those 4/5 factions in the Game; Irl there are many more and the complexity is definetly given in conflicts like in Syria). The only point I felt the story fell flat was the utter need to blame Russia for every Warcrime when irl some of the warcrimes named in the story were committed by NATO forces ('Highway of Death' as an example). The Story didn't have huge twists and turns and it went kind of how you would expect it to go, but I think it was a good campaign
edit: Maybe important to say, but my first shooters include CS and R6. A 'pseudo-tactical' bias does exist and is not something that most og fans of the franchise will have.

my take is the story was great, but i still feel like the original had more "flare" or style, but the clean house operations mmmmn so good. How do you make annual franchise, make people aware of the immense evil in the world...??
1... take off the kid gloves
2... war is brutal, human conflict is brutal
3... use 1 & 2 to make a sense of purpose for the hero's & villains, motivation. No violence for sake of violence.
4... think most COD fans would like a story more than 5hrs. Give some time to cook the motivations.
