With the release of Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War right around the corner, I recently revisited the campaign of 2010's original Call of Duty Black Ops. It's a game that many of us share fond memories of, and it's no surprise why. Black Ops perfectly executed the Call of Duty formula, while featuring so many elements that made its story unique: It relied heavily on real life events and history, gave us a relatable squad of characters like Mason, Woods and Reznov, and ended on a plot twist that blew our minds. In this video, we relive the story and its best moments one more time.

I feel you on the Zombies. That's why I was SO heavily invested in playing it. Years of my life. It actually got me researching all about the crazy experiments the Germans and Russians did during that time. And all the conspiracy theories. It was so interesting! It was so disappointing when Origins came out and when they started going too crazy with the story. I gave up in it completely. Lost interest and never got BO3 til recently, and hated it.
I did end up trying BO4 zombies and was so surprised. The Chaos story gave me this same feeling about zombies again, got me researching different mythologies around the world, which I never had an interest in. Yet everyone hated on it, and now will likely never be finished. And now I have no reason to buy a Call of Duty ever again.

Fast fact: BO1&2 stories are written by David S. Goyer who wrote Nolan's Batman trilogy.
I like how BO blended the hollywood action with crazy cold war conspiracies and real events but sometime I felt that the story was out of place a little bit (maybe I read too much history) and a lot of futuristic weapons in 1960s setting was very jarring for me. I personally think Treyarch got better at storytelling and gameplay in BO2 like failable and secret objectives that effect main story, semi-non linear missions and memorable characters.

  • @IbenPlaysYT
    @IbenPlaysYT Před 3 lety +7

Black Ops 1 encouraged me to research about history, namely the Cold War. In year 9 of secondary school I was learning about the Vietnam War with my class and a lot of real-world elements from that war reminded me of the campaign missions (Khe Sanh, The TET Offensive - even the Bay of Pigs invasion, Cuban Missile Crisis & the Space Race).
The TVs in the main menu/interrogation room playing back historical archived footage makes me feel like I’m making the history that’s already been written. Whether it’s boots-on-the-ground combat or on-the-rails vehicle segments, the action never gets boring as you feel like you’re shaping history as we know it. Hearing the songs “Fortunate Son” in the beginning and end of “S.O.G” & “Sympathy for the devil” during “Crash Site” in the background felt kickass! If that isn’t enough, hearing the soundtrack “Blood and Iron” from COD WAW play in the mission “Project Nova” was a fantastic callback to that game, as well as following WAW’s Russian protagonist (Dimitri Petrenko) whilst playing as Reznov (who you followed and fought alongside as Petrenko). It’s such a shame these two characters perished under unfortunate circumstances.
The story, action and characters in it keep me engaged constantly. Mason (to me) is an intelligent and resilient character, always thinking on his feet and putting himself first in the most dire situations (solving the numbers’ broadcast nearing the story’s climax, after constant torture and mental torment, carries out JFK’s request to kill Dragovich) His frustration about the numbers throughout his captivity extended to me, as I was as clueless as he is and wanted to know what exactly his captors wanted.
I wasn’t able to understand the plot until I replayed the last missions “Rebirth”, “Revelations” and “Redemption”. The twist of Reznov being a figment in Mason’s mind after his escape from Vorkuta is both staggering and emotional. I love how everything eventually comes full-circle in “Revelations”, which I always thought was a ‘walking simulator’ and a time waster. I love how each set piece are flashbacks to Mason’s past (his brainwashing process in Vorkuta, meeting with/failing to assassinate JFK, seeing the Soyuz rocket take off - which in reality he successfully sabotaged).
I’ll never forget how much I became interested in history after playing this game and doing my school homework. Unlike the current COD games, this is one of the few that paints a gritty picture of war and make you feel like you’re really in the thick of it. No super-advanced technology or a mediocre story (cough cough, BO3).
Thank you for making this video 👏🏽

1:44 "they betrayed and ruthlessly murdered their own soldiers, including one of Reznov's dear friends."
... Also, fun fact, one of the protagonists of World at War who you play as on the Russian's side.
If you played the previous game, you not only felt bad because "poor Reznov", you where right there to watch the two take on the Nazi forces all the way from their lowest point, hiding amongst the dead bodies in a fountain in Stalingrad, right up until the two of them, wounded and bloodied, raised the soviet flat above the Reichstag.
... And then you watch these three jackasses throw your old character into a room to die horrifically, choking on a bio-weapon that basically liquifies the respiratory system, for the sake of an experiment, and throw Reznov into a gulag to suffer for kicks.
... Needless to say, "Dragovich... Kravchenko... Steiner... These three must die!" rung pretty darn hard in me at the time lol

Thats a really great video robin.
In my opinion Black Ops 2 presented a really interesting sequel and story that is as good as Black ops story. They tried a new approach by having multiple endings depending on your actions but I think they actually did it great.
The way of doing missions in the past and missions in the future and how they connect them together is awesome in my opinion and the storytelling was great.
The endings depends on some crucial actions you take through the campaign, and if i remember correctly i think even there was optional missions or mission that make the story change if you actually did them.
And the characters were great. In addition for the original characters we have new people in the future like Mason's son and a villain that is present in both timelines: Raul Menendez. Also the soundtracks are good and i remember them until this day.
I suggest you give BO2 a try and see what you think of it now

For example when I replayed it I noticed no other characters ever interact with Reznov out of Mason's team. Which is an early hint that he was never there in the first place. The idea of the story missions being the retelling of a brainwashed man was unique. Even the fact he is positive it happened exactly as he says. You even at one point hear the interrogators emphasise the words "no one else made it out" in frustration at Mason who as adamant Reznov was with him. One thing I only partially noticed the first time I played, and really paid attention to later, is the fact that illusionary Reznov has his right index finger intact for most of the game, with the exception of rebirth (might be other times where I didn’t notice), this was strange due to the fact that when we first meet Reznov in WAW, the whole reason he gives Dimitri his rifle in the first place was because his right index finger was blown off

I wonder if you would consider a more broad critique on Call of Duty campaigns in general - for instance, discussing the 'limitations' you mention in this video, what you believe makes a good CoD campaign overall, what element of storytelling each CoD campaign does best, and to what degree a CoD story can stand as its own compared the types of stories told in other FPS games, or those of other genres of videogames, or even other forms of media. I don't know of anybody else who has really delved into a topic from this 'meta' angle and it's something I'd love to hear a long take on

Never have I felt truly horrible from a videogame, except when Dmitri Petrenko died the way he did. I had played WaW’s singleplayer over and over and over. When this happened... damn

Loved the video, I totally had forgotten how good this game was. It was a lot of fun to go back memory lane and hear about your opinions on it, made me want to revisit it in the future sometime :) I'm not planning on getting the new cod though, I feel like I have to wait and see how good it is (I usually only play the singleplayer). Keep up the great work! :DD

Great video again robin , cod used to be so great back in the day. I remember being blown away by Black Ops's campaign... It ended up being so iconic and I never really understood why they never attempted anything like that again.
Playing the BOCW beta just makes me miss these old games, it's pretty terrible imo
Also, this is where I became a huge fan of zombies, which i ended up loving until BO3.. after that it sucked

Playing World at War, a gritty call back to the roots, how limbs blew off, the amazing portrayal of those fronts, then going into the spy thriller style of Black Ops, amazing times. I still love both, but growing up with Big Red One, World at War was my favorite.

They improved a lot of things compared to MW, it's not as campy and you can do good when you rush whereas it was way harder in MW because the game rewarded so much playing slow and camping at windows. But yeah the SBMM gets all really quick, it gets really boring to play all the time against tryhards who jumpshot at every corner and play like their life is on the line
