  • Using the new Davinci Resolve 18.5 update, and the improved magic mask. We are now more easily able to isolate a subject from the background, and remove the background without a green screen. We can also use the magic mask in Davinci Resolve to replace backgrounds in a variety of scenarios. Here, we create a 3d space in a very easy to use software and composite it into our real life footage all in resolve. Combining this with the depth map and relight features in Davinci Resolve could really yield some nice results, especially as they are improving over the weeks and months. Wild time for all of us! The 3d software I am using to create our new environment is called set a light 3D. It's main purpose is to test lighting for photography and cinematography. I have been using it for many years and it is a crucial tool for preparing for a shoot. Here, while not its main purpose, we use it to create new backgrounds to place in our footage. This is not sponsored by set a light 3d. I reached out to them and they gave me a discount code for the software. They did not pay me. Use code wstrpp for 15% off - www.elixxier.c...

    Subscribed, love this sort of content and method of learning .. One thing I did notice is that at the end when you are back in the fake living room, your arms move in an odd fashion as you're speaking.. it sort of looks like you are typing while you are talking, but since there's no way to see your hands, it looks a little weird. Obviously part of this effect is magnified now that I know how it's done... is this a side effect of how the masking is completed?
    I also noticed that the sound profile doesn't really match the target room.. since there's so many soft/absorbent surfaces in the fake room, I would recommend adding some baffle boards (you can use blank painting canvases with the back of the frames filled with towels to accomplish this on the cheap).. By using a number of frames, you can add/remove them off your surrounding walls to add/remove baffle/bounce to choose a combination that suits your fake room

    • @BlaineWestropp1
      @BlaineWestropp1  Před rokem

      hey thanks! good eyes and ears here. youre right about the sound not matching the big room, that is beyond what I was willing or able to do for this video (I am not a sound pro, I do not do any post sound work and my sound quality is not top notch), but still a great observation. I didn't notice anything with the hands, maybe I was just fidgeting with them or something. I will need to take a closer look. this technique does take a lot of work to finesse and I tried to remain still so I could quickly process everything for this video.

    I love me some Fusion but looking at your setup, to me, it seems you could do all comping and color correction (having both the foreground and the background in the same node setup) on the Color page (and add the alpha there too) skipping those parts in your Fusion part. That way you don't have to jump to the Fusion page and back whenever you want to change anything. And you also get the superior CC tools of the Color page.
    It's a bit much to explain here but basically you have your sources in one Fusion clip, each source connected to its own MediaOut node. Then when you open that clip on the Color page you add source outputs on the node area and connect those to their own Corrector nodes and layer them with, you guessed it, a Layer node. The alpha footage you drag and drop from the Media Pool and connect it to the alpha input of the foregrounds corrector node.
    Do a search for "add source" in the manual for details:)

    Amazing to see tech do this well as of today. This is mind blowing. I'm sure this will get better. IMHumbleO, I find it a little off putting that your ears are sharp, but the bg is from a more shallow DoF. Also, the edges of your hair gives out the fact that it's not real.. due to the pixelation. Maybe antialiasing could be used (btw, I'm a Davinci novice and in no way trying to teach you or the community). But, this is the best I've ever seen... great implementation. Thanks for sharing! 🙏 Blaine, how do you see this tech as a film maker in terms of using it or not? Would you prefer an original organic bg over a fake one and for what reasons? (leaving out the obvious, like camera movement, etc.). Thanks.

    • @BlaineWestropp1
      @BlaineWestropp1  Před 11 měsíci +1

      hey thanks! I think this tech will get better and easier. also for the ears, i do believe you can get someones ears in focus while still having a blurred BG. I think I was on a 50 anamorphic. but yes, could this be better, yes. was more so just kind of showing the quick approach. as far as using it, I am all for using it. Backgrounds get replaced all the time. of course I like shooting in natural real sets but I also love shooting in the studio and what you can do in a studio is unlimited so I like the VFX part of the process for studio work to make the images really shine. that's where the money is!

    • @BlaineWestropp1
      @BlaineWestropp1  Před 9 měsíci +1

      hey thanks! there are a couple things you can do in this scenario and it kind of depends on how the lighting is in the scene, and how dark the shadows are. for one you can recreate them with VFX, or by basically duplicating and rotating the person, turning them to a matte, or just to black/grey/dark, and feathering off where needed to make a shadow, this way the motion matches what they did in real life. you can also use digital lights and shadow catchers. I dont have tons of experience with this particular scenario but hope that helps a little.

      @@BlaineWestropp1 In hindsight I should have known this. Logically. Which do you find better. Apparently if you use a very light grain effect in DaVinci it will make the static background appear more realistic.

    • @BlaineWestropp1
      @BlaineWestropp1  Před rokem

      Grain will definitely help blend. I used slight grain in this video. If you want to extend your set a little bit, use generative fill in photoshop. If you want a whole new background, shoot on solid color or green and replace fully!
