    Your Bengal knows you as well as you know him. It's not like a stranger chasing him. He knows you as a friend and wants to play with you. Chase is such a fun game for them, they love to dash around the house. You don't really ever catch them, unless you are a ninja or something. You run in their direction and they dash. Then you run away he'll follow. After a few years now, my two cats and I have quite a set of rules we play sort of tag, chase, hide, game; with three of us it nicely complex.

    Like dogs Bengals follow you around. I have to say our Bengals are "obedient" like they know their names and come running from anywhere in the house when you call (unless they know it is a trip to the vet). Our Bengals sit and jump on command, stay quiet when asked, they know the names of their favorite games like "get your straw", "tinsel", "basement", "outside", "do you want to be brushed", "jump up", "catch" and several other activities. All learned by praise and rewards of play or treats.

    You're right, their vocabulary is extensive.
    When I first thought of compiling this video it was daunting. There are so many signs to capture I could not get them all. So I decided to do it like my games, approx 20 at a time. I have nearly another 20 in mind, 1-tone and 3-tone cries, horizontal tail, the pounce wiggle, home base, testing water, a dozen ear shapes... but only a few on camera. Some day I'll publish vol 2.

    Thank you for your input into cat language/ body language. I have 2 Burmese sisters that I rescued and they are very vocal and needy. Reading their body language and understanding their likes and dislikes is a huge plus to making our home their home too. Cats have over 100 vocalizations while dogs have about 10. Thank you again for your love of your kitties and understanding them and sharing..And helping others understand what they are telling us...

    Our one cat cries like a baby until we let him outside. He loves going outside to check out the birds, squirrels... and nibble on the wild catnip of course, lol. Also, we adopted a 9 mo bengal tabby mix, he was super skittish around us the first day, but I kept making eye contact with him and doing the slow blink, he would reciprocate, and after three days he's already purring and rolling over on his back. If you pick up on cat body language they will learn to trust you 100x quicker.

      elfinlore not necessarily, I am disabled and my friend bought me a Bengal not realising the requirements. I’m totally exhausted at the end of each day but it’s a small price to pay to actually have Precious living with me, she is wonderful. Next job is to train her to go potty where I do whilst she’s still a kitten as things are best learned before they are 6 months old, more difficult as they age

    Thank you so much for this very informative video. My cat is part bengal (rescue) and I know nothing of her background or even that she was one before someone at the vet told me. So I am researching information to try to keep her happy and even to understand her. I have learned quite a bit from this video. She first came to me not even allowing herself to lay her head down to sleep. Now she sleeps with her entire belly showing. It makes me happy to think she now feels safe here.

    I just adopted a 4yr old rescue cat and although he was listed as british short hair he has all the looks and characteristics of a Bengal, he's been here 17 days and has settled in very well with my 2 black lab bitches and he's a wee darling, first week he was in a right sorry state and all he did was eat, sleep and cuddle, now he's more relaxed and is never far from me totally adorable, he as made fast progress as we think he was thrown out of a car and someone for sure had him by his tail as the 1st vertibrae (bone joint) of his tail was disjointed, now it's much better and he's happy to be here, quite obvious he is glad to be out of kitty prison 😁 he was there for 2 months before I saw his pic and knew that's my cat!
    Great video and thank you for sharing 🌞💓🌎🌍🌏💓🌞

    OH! I loved this! I've lived with cats my whole life and I suppose I've picked up on some of these things naturally but I've never given it much more thought then that. I'll have to pay more attention next time I see Roxy pretending that she isn't enjoying the play with here puppy sister. She often encourages Shasta to play then makes noises like she's not enjoying it. When I separate them she comes back for more every time.

    My cats are both around 7 years old, were introduced around 4 1/2 years. the Bengal is a very dominant male. He does not use the litterbox, he 'goes' outdoors. The female knows how to stay out of trouble with him. I adopted both cats when they were older and they just worked it out over time. Kai LOVES his outdoor access. Each has his/her own life and enjoys sharing time with me in his/her own separate way. Still, I sigh when I see two kitties sleeping and grooming and playing together.

    @UkeeandKoru  Před 14 lety +4

    Ukee cries almost non-stop when I am in the house. She sits a little ways off, and cries under her breath to see if I'll come play with her or pet her. Other times, she cries from across the house hoping I will come find her and ply. My fault, since I do respond when she cries, and she knows games or petting nearly always result from her crying. Sometimes she cries just to announce her arrival in a room, and hear me say, "Ukee's here!"

  • @UkeeandKoru
    @UkeeandKoru  Před 16 lety +2

    Thanks for commenting and glad cat language applies universally!
    FYI cats have oils glands in their cheeks and mark their territory with their scent. Scent is one thing I can not show on video. They are also emotionally attached to their territory, so marking is not just a mechanical act. When they are happy about their territory, or looking for comfort, they rub their cheeks because it makes them happy to remind themselves this is their home. Sometimes they want to show off that they own it.

  • @UkeeandKoru
    @UkeeandKoru  Před 15 lety +1

    Fun!
    If your cat is playing, you'll see the same mixed signs as I caught on video. The arched back is to look as big as possible as if attacking or defending. But at the same time she knows she is just playing, so she makes the downward curved tail which means "play". A cat who was really confronting a real threat like a dog, would have their tail straight and at an upward angle, like the cartoon you see of a holloween black cat. The curve tail is a good sign your cat is having fun.

  • @UkeeandKoru
    @UkeeandKoru  Před 15 lety

    Bengals are short hair and easy to maintain in terms of just a little brushing. They tend to spend time doing what you're doing. playing when you are around, sleeping when you are sleeping, etc. But they really need an hour or more of play a day. It's a bit of work that way, but a fun time. If you are away for a lot of time, be sure they have stuff to do in the house so their lives are enriched.

    We just got a brown rosetted bengal boy, Osiris, and I'm noticing many of his body language signs.

  • @UkeeandKoru
    @UkeeandKoru  Před 11 lety

    you can't stop a cat from scratching any more than stopping breathing. And you don't want to, scratching keeps them strong and healthy. You can direct their scratching to less destructive targets. A cat comes in, stretches, then they often like to show their paws, knuckles and claws: they really are impressive. And they scratch to mark their territory / home. Especially as they come in they want to re-assert their home.

  • @HybridDK

  • @UkeeandKoru
    @UkeeandKoru  Před 11 lety

    what a wonderful point. There has been so little research in this topic, but it is fun to observe and postulate. If I guessed, I'd say that mammals evolved from a common back ground. So in the same way that we "understand" when a baby cries, similar basic modes are used by many species. Fear, pain, or calming of a mother are things we recognize. A mother calming her kittens does not scream at them. An animal in a fight does not purr quietly. At least as a starting point it seems common.

    Yes I truly believe that to be an Urban Legand...besides not that many people can afford to buy a good Bengal. I paid a lot for mine because they do what they do and are what they are. Mine swims, plays fetch, barks at birds and yes is totally crazy but amazingly cuddly. I have only had him for a week and he's now 13 weeks old. Ukee and Koru are amazing and I hope my Tavi is half as beautiful. Thank you for sharing!

      A nice assessment. I don't want to short change all other cats, but I find the unique quality of bengals is their imagination. They are great at make-believe pretend play games, imagining up new games, and creatively solving problems. Our girls are now 9 and 11 and seem to come up with new ideas every day.

He talks all the time cuddles under the covers gives head butts and kisses. Loves to walk on a leash ride in the car and plays fetch. He has never met a stranger. This is a super smart breed with loads of personality. Check out Elvis Pester on FB for some great photo's of my Bengal.

    It is also suggested that cats learned these calls from us during domestication. Feral cats will talk very little, while house cats tend to talk a lot more. They learn to imitate babies to get our attention, to imitate snakes with their hiss to fend off those who are unwelcome, etc.

    The blink can mean hello. But I think at the least it means "friendly hello". When a cat walks up to a strange cat invading their yard, their eyes are wide or even threatening looking, not slow blinking. The slow blink is kind of a handshake where the cat is trusting enough to go out of sight for a moment. The published data often cites the gesture as "love" or at least "hello reserved for friends and family"

    I'd put a scratching post, vertical placed in the way of the sofa. And maybe also one of those cardboard flat scratching pads right near the door. With the post near the sofa you can put double stick tape on the sofa arm. you are trying to give kitty a better option on the post, but in the same area where they have gotten used to marking as they come in. Over time move the post gradually to a location you can accept. We have posts in most rooms of the house.

    It is a nice thing Milo rubs his cheeks on yours. This is a standard greeting which is less about him owning you like the when they do this on a wall. It is just exchanging like a hug. He shares with you some of his scent, and he gets some of yours. Cats often sleep on cloths you leave out because it comforts them to be near things with your smell. Plus, who doe not like their cheeks massaged?

    If she rolls over exposing her tummy, touching her tummy is not like a dog liking to be rubbed. I think tummy touching is an invitation to play. And some cats don't enjoy tummy rubs. I would try either petting under her front arm pits, not her belly. Or petting her back even though she is on her side or upside down. It could be upside down is a sign of trust, and wanting to be petted, but just pet on her head or back.

    Awesome! I actually learned a few new things.
    But you forgot an important tail gesture... thinking. Once I learned when my cat was thinking, I understood her and her actions better. Cats think when their tail is horizontal and waving back and forth. (not as swiftly as the "I'm annoyed" tail waving) Once they've made up their mind, their tail goes back to being straight up again.

    Ukee is a common name in Japan usually spelled Yuki. You would hear that name a lot in anime. I heard it as the name of a cat in an anime from the Matrix collection of Anime. It means Snow. Our first cat's favorite toys are always black, so we wanted to name the second cat Kuro which means black. But we decided on Koru, which means nothing. Since Bengals are part Asian Leopard Cat, we wanted Asian names.

    I have to DSH cats and they do most of this too! My older cat is also very large, talks just like the cat in this video (All the different pitches and everything) but is just a tabby! Interesting!

    your cats remind me so much of my 2 bengal girls!! As I was watching and listening, they both perked up...they were very interested in 'where those other Bengals were.'....Very cute!

    What inspires them to really think hard is games. They sooo much love to be active anything they can learn to make games longer they learn quickly. So we have a game between me and the two of them that is sort of "tag" and "chase". Actually rather complicated rules when there are three of us. Another is Koru and her Krinkle ball. For this game she knows "get ready" upon which she walks around behind her shear curtain to be ready to pounce on the ball from behind. They another 20 words or so.

      Thanks for the comment. It has been a few year. The cats are doing wonderfully. I have a new video in the works to update everyone who's susbscribed. The cats now walk outside on a leash with me, and we've created a whole bevy of new games together we can share. And Koru has been getting very good at her cat trick. Some time this fall when the bike race season is over I'll put something together.

    Very interesting video. Thanks. My regular domestic shorthair tabby has all the same signs, and even though I've had her for 11 years, I hadn't known what most of those poses mean before I watched it. Thanks, very informative. Just saw bengals at a cat show; it took all the willpower I had not to walk home with one...

    Wonderful video, very informative. I definitely recognize most of the signs in this video from my own cat, Nia. :)
    I always wondered a bit why she began grinding her face on everything, I had a hunch about it being a territorial issue, I see that I wasn't far off. :)
    Thanks for another great video, good to see more from you!

    @naci2012 check my other videos about Bengal games for ideas. I post them specifically to answer questions like yours since Bengals need lots of games. Cats like to play hide and seek , or more like "chase you, chase me." Get the game going by peeking around a corner at your kitty.
    Some cats like string games, others small mouse games, and others feather games. Try each to see what you cat likes. Be careful with strings, especially fine string, not to leave it around where they might eat it.
