  • Great catfight duet as Carol Burnett and Ruthie Henshall sing "There's Always a Woman."
    Sondheim wrote this for "Anyone Can Whistle." This song was cut from that Broadway production, which only lasted nine performances. It's perfect for "Putting It Together", though.
    This excerpt is from the highly recommended Region 1 DVD "Putting It Together" of a live 1999 performance. Other excerpts are available at

    I love the French part!
    - Parlez vous.
    - Coq Au Vin.
    - Watch your mouth.
    Clearly most people from the audience didn't get it, they only laughed at the "carbon monoxide" bit. :(
    Too bad, these both ladies are FANTASTIC!

    @PinkCowgirl925 - It's not really a conversation-- it means:
    "Good travels"
    "Goodbye"
    "On the side"
    "My love"
    "Do you speak..."
    "Chicken with wine"
    But they are more said because they are commonly used French phrases in english conversations

    There are many plays on words throughout the song.
    1:24 Jacquelyn the Ripper - Jack the Ripper is an infamous serial killer
    1:55 Hand in the till - someone who is stealing
    2:00 $5 diamond: a cheap fake
    2:02 $3 bill: doesn't exist - a total fake
    2:24 poisonous gas vs. slivers of glass
    2:30 bamboo is efficient: slivers of bamboo hammered beneath fingernails is an infamous torture technique

    At 1:28, Carol says "Bon Voyage" and they start trading French phrases. Ruthie's final phrase is "coq au vin" - chicken in wine - and Carol replies "Watch your mouth!"

  • @theBestArts
    @theBestArts Před 15 lety +1

    gorgonjola, I can see how this would be a very difficult video for someone speaking English as a second language - but your written English is perfect.
    Although they are exchanging nonsense phrases in French, Carol takes the last phrase out of context. "Coq" in French is a rooster (male chicken) while in English "cock" (pronounced the same) is slang for penis.
    Putting It Together is a loosely connected set of songs. Click on "more info" for a link to more videos from the musical.

    The older and younger women are rivals here for the older man. They pretend they are friends on the surface, but there is an underlying battle.
    At 1:05, Carol offers Ruthie a drink, a brandy, Quantro (orange liqueur) or hemlock (a poison.)
    At 1:15, Carol lists benign aspects of being a woman, but then says "the carbon monoxide that fills the garage" - an easy form of suicide... or murder.

    I saw ANYONE CAN WHISTLE when it tried out in Phila. So much good stuff, but.... Broadway is unforgiving. Even many of Sondeheim's (now) classic shows, revived again and again, were savaged by the likes of Walter Kerr (who?).
