I simply love her pronunciation of EACH word. So few singers focus on articulation, thinking the melody will carry the song, thinking as long as THEY know the lyrics, who cares about the audience. Not Carol Burnett. Throughout her entire career she showed respect for the audience AND the lyricist by articulating each word flawlessly. And I salute her for that! Spectacular rendition of this iconic song here!
Thats exactly the thrust of the whole Sondheim catalog though. Oversing this work and it will destroy you... hell i know its literally impossible to oversing some of this stuff, nobody alive has the breath.
Not to mention she also manages to do it while getting drunker. ❤
Burnett's interpretation is extremely moving and accessible, and takes this song to a different level.
I would imagine Carol's performance was colored by both her parents being alcoholics. Her experiences, especially with her mother, would have given her a special insight into how she would present Joanne.
So true, so true. Great insight!
Since I am older than death, I remember the first time Carol Burnett sang this song on her Variety show. She was doing her cleaning woman skit, with the bucket, rags etc. She sat down on the edge of the stage and let loose with this. It was one of those electric moments that defined early T.V. and I was stunned by her performance. I am happy to have the chance to hear her sing this again.
i think she just made a lot of money to retire comfortably and wanted to focus on her family
Lucky
Sheila Gish "Company" The Donmar,1995; Olivier a Best Supporting Actress in a Musical. Not much more than this song. Stole the show, believed she WAS drunk. Carol Burnett gives great Sondheim, hysterical; acting every syllable. But "In Concert" I believe. Playing so much for every laugh may not work in every production, but still always my favourite.
I’ll look on YT for the Carol Burnett clip. Thank you. I used to watch the reruns with my dad.
Thanks for this comment. I heard there was a version from her show but I've been unable to find it.
I like CB's interpretation of this song; it's less rage, more wry.
She really nails this in her own unique way.
It’s a bit overkill but yeah
I have never scene this song sung so truthfully. She just destroyed me.
Exactly. I have never seen so much vulnerability in this character.
This is Miss Hannigan's more uptown sister.
I choked
Lol
hahah xddd
Your right I never thought about it that way.
For me, this is the most effective and intelligent interpretation of this showboat of a song. She really gets deeply into the character and makes you forget she is singing. Masterful.
I'd love to see Carol Burnett play the whole part of Joanne. She'd do an amazing job with it.
She did and was great! Long Beach Civic Light Opera.. 1993. Only 3 week run.. she blew the doors off with this number and played Joanne as rye, dry, sardonic, but not a B like LaPone's.
@@itstheburnz I saw her there.
God this woman is amazing.
It's amazing how Carol Burnett demonstrates such profound appreciation for every word in the lyrics of a song.
Carol brings both pathos and humor. She is the best.
She has this prose like style of singing with all her characters
Carol was absolutely brilliant here. Her voice, her emotions, her presentation and her rendition .... she was so damn good, that words fail me. I see below, (though it's many years since it was posted), that someone's comment expressed their feelings that Carol takes this song "to a different level". I couldn't agree more. I doubt that Carol would have ever even seen these comments, But she was fabulous - and is definitely a talented and much-loved national treasure.
Wow she really embodies the bitterness and alcoholism...very moving
Her parents were alcoholic so she understood this well.
Why do people feel the need to compare performers and performances? Elaine Stritch did a great job, but so does Carol Burnett. So does Sheila Gish by the way. All weary and sarcastic in different ways, but all worth performances.
Goddamn Carol. I knew you could rock this but I didn't expect this level of chills. She would be an amazing Joanne.
She should've played Joann in either the revival cast or the cast with NPH as Robert. She is astounding.
+Kneehigh1000 Barbara Walsh was really amazing in the revival though.
+1Ewery1 So, so true. Babs had this subtle sarcasm always shining through that made the character pop.
And IMHO, Patti LuPone doing this song was the highlight of the NPH version. But Carol knocks it out of the park here!!
What a tart she plays :) She does it differently from Elaine! I find that I can relate to Elaine more, but this is fabulous!!!
Go, girl.
She's so damn talented! Her diction alone is perfect professional talent.
Love her version and Stritch--pulls totally different emotion from this wonderful song.
Why the hell has La Burnett not performed in a Sondheim musical on Broadway? She's perfect.
She has...THIS! Also, Company (1993) and Follies (1985) 😂
Just watched her video doing Not Getting Married Today. I thought it was funny and cute. Noticed she did this and thought "This might actually be really good from her." I was not disappointed. Great performance on this one and perfect for her vocal range. I'm sure she's got many other great performances this young man has not seen, but this here was gold.
Brilliant! Her voice is splendid!
I LOVE this woman. She has been a part of my life via TV for 45 years!
When Carol was on the Gary Moore show, it helped our family through rough times with my mom's nerves. Carol's singing and comedy kept us on TV night in a happy place.
Another solid perfromance by Carol Burnett!
I love both this version and the Stritch version. Both are much different interpretations, both truthful.
class act..always
sincerely.. i thank stars to see such true talent..
i am humbled.. you still have some serious beautiful legs
some peoples one can never forget..i grew up with you in my household television.
spirit is seldom found and never replaceable.. carries thru out time. such is eternal.
thank you, Ms. Burnett.
Few women -- if any -- in history have entertained so many millions of people for so many years so memorably as has Carol Burnett. She is a legend. (And you're right: those legs are spectacular!) I'm just amazed that in all of the decades since her TV show went off the air, no other female performer has been able to step up and fill her shoes in quite the same way. Sad.
She is brilliant!! Always entertaining at whatever she does.
F#*@ing brilliant. What a pleasure to watch Ms. Burnett use the full range of her treasure trove of talents from comedy, to tragedy and pathos in this song that I am very fond of. It's an obvious choice to add her to the pantheon of Stritch and Lupone. ❤☮🌎
Carol Burnett is (apologies fir the cliche) a national treasure. Incomparable. Thank you, Ms. Burnett, for everything.
If I ever had the nerve to try out for a musical, I 'd choose this song. I was RAISED by this woman!!!!
I hope you do try out for one! Doing a musical can be a wonderful time no matter how big or small your role! I love this song, too. There is a saying, however, in musical theatre: never audition using a Sondheim song. They are usually more challenging to sing, mostly due to the timing of the way you sing the lyrics. And accompanists often have difficulty playing his peices reading the music cold.
If I may suggest to look for an audition song that showcases your voice well and is easy enough that you dont have to worry too much about getting lost. I find an easy method is to look at the role or show you are going for, and sing something that they would sing, but from a different play.
WOW, when was this? .. she sounds great and looks great.. She can definitely act..
1999 at a concert appearance; not sure how old she was but you can find it on her wikipedia page. And yeah, she can definitely act and sing as well as do comedy, just as amazing now, too! :)
It was indeed 1999-2000, but this was "Putting It Together" on Broadway.
Wow! Carol Burnett is powerful and very effective. She blew the doors off.
Joanne is a qualified drunk...one who can hold their booze and keep most of the 'sober' facade. She does this well, in that you only see the impact of the boozery at the ends of phrases. She's 'in control' until a bit of emotion gets past that wall, then she can't control it and the smirk comes out. Well done.
Burnett is superb singing a superb Sondheim song. Theater doesn't get much better than this.
love the song! she made me love it even more! bravo!
The best interpetation of this song ever. PERIOD.
Carol Burnett is still one of my all time greatest inspirations.
I remember that show! that's why I was looking it up today she can really sing.
Me too! I was a kid watching comedy, usually ignoring the singing. This had me transfixed. I knew this was something more, something smart and sophisticated.
That was all together too wonderful!
I have seen Lord know how many productions of Company but THE best I have ever see surprised me...Faith Prince. No peer. She did it in her act a while ago and I hyperventilated.
Have to say I've been watching different versions all day and so far this is the best.
Next to Elaine Stritch's this is the best rendering of that song I have ever heard.
Have you heard of Patti LuPone 🤷🏽♂️
Bárbara Walsh
@@victordunson719 I was gonna say patti absolutely SMASHED IT
Burnett is right up there with Stritch in interpreting so very intelligently, and poignantly, this very great, and very sad, song.
She sang this brilliantly.
Carol has a special stage presence. Every character she portrays is done with the Burnett magic 👍
THE best version I have ever heard STUNNED me. Faith Prince gave me chills. I am a huge Prince fan and have heard everyone sing this song since Stritch but WOW! Prince is a vocal powerhouse, cynical without being mean and funny in the right places. I wish she'd done the recent version instead of LuPone who played Medea.
I love everyone in this revue. But especially Carol.
Carol Burnett is the best!!
Wow. Excellent.
Incredibly personal version and totally in the moment. I just got done watching Carol do SHY in 64 and then turned to this. What a brilliant musical theatre entertainer.
Brilliant performance.
I think she nailed it..and unlike Stritch she actually can sing quite well! She's a legend for a reason!!
I love carol Burnett, she does my favorite interpretation of this song!! a comic genius!
She is the best
Carol pulls it off and delivers a lovely rendition...kudos to Burnett!
Anna Kendrick does a short version on "Camp". She sings it wonderfully.
Anna was too young to really do the song justice.
WONDERFUL!!!
Wonderful.
Just spectaculur Carol never ceases to amaze me by the extent of her talent and limitless ability
I saw her do this at the Long Beach Terrace Theater sometime in the nineties.
Bravo!!! Such a sad song.
Her top is fabulous as well as her voice. She's amazing.
WOW
Phenomenal
So nice...
I’ve never clicked so fast as when I saw this in my recommended
When I heard this in CAMP, I could imagine HER doing it! Just because of Annie!!! I love her!!! And I'm 18 and one day. Go figure. lol! "I'll drink to that" :)
Brilliant in The Front Page..
Brilliant .....bravo Carol (saw the show a few times with Carol and also saw the 1st mounting( MTC) of it with Julie Andrews) but Patti LuPone in 20110 hits it out of the ballpark! Amazing
This song wasn’t in the show when Julie Andrews did it.
KISSES!!!
Carol would've made a great Mama Rose.
Yup I have said that for years.
Carol national treasure Burnett ...grear version
i agree! she ruled as Miss Hannigan in Annie. "Little Girls" was amazing
Welcome Back!!
I had no idea Carol Burnett could sing. Very impressive.
You must have never seen her TV show. It only played for ten years and is now is syndication.
And Sondheim is vey wordy!
In a perfect world/alternative universe, after Carol Burnett's TV variety show ended, she would have been given a TV talk show of her own, interviewing -- and performing with -- other stars. It would have been spectacular! -- better than Oprah, Rosie, and Ellen combined. I wish....
I wonder if she were just coming on the scene today what would be said? Things like...
"Oh she must have had a bad childhood and has emotional issues because she hides her immense singing talent behind the smile of comedy.... Well, she did have parents who drank, so I wonder what she felt when she sang this tune. Perhaps she was just always trying to make folks smile during stressful times so she turned to comedy.... "
Well, she didn't come up now, she arrived on the scene then, when we all could simply enjoy everything she brought to the stage/screen. What was said then was simply "Wow, isn't she talented?". Let's keep it like that, because that is the bottom line.
I loved her then, and I love her now.
She is a real show stopper however you categorize her.
I don’t remember watching this video but I guess I liked it…unsurprisingly.
I would’ve loved to see her in Company.
Shes good
patti lupones is so gooood.
Saw her in Long Beach...great
With Patrick Cassidy in Company
I think she nailed this!! Unlike Stritch, she can sing quite well..they both have a bitter way of delivery, but Burnett's has a certain wistfulness that Elaine's didn't. What a legend.
Burnett has such range as a singer--but she wisely saves it for strategic moments in the song. She's still looking--and singing--pretty good at age ninety. I wish some wise person had done a film of the play.
@leisuresuitmikey I hate to correct you, but carol burnett, (indeed a great comedienne and actress) is very much a singer...she began her career singing with a couple of great and highly regarded Broadway musicals, and the the three TV specials she did with Julie Andrews were nearly all singing, plus she recorded a few albums...(i own two of them) and she could BELT. I DO agree with you about the "Follies" concert, though she sang fine, there were a couple of points where she was off key.
outstanding version and I like her EM[PHASIS AND HOW the pianist has to adjust to her pacing.
@murbuzz And your point is? And I fully realize that this is Carol [no e] Burnett having seen this performance live. I ADORE Carol Burnett more than any performer of al time.
ahh, thankyou. ^^
@RachelWolfMusic --Totally!
@EbonyTomkinson she did play miss hannigan in the old film version
@leisuresuitmikey she was considered good enough to do a lovely set of duets with Julie Andrews. Carlo started on Broadway jjust like she did. :P
Love them both!!!
wonderkful
Sondheim was dabbling around the edges with his own sexuality when he penned this. Stritch's alcoholism and 'could not give a fuck attitude' was perfect to convey (and disguise) his resentment of Americn heterosexual female decadence and pretence.
Wow
Burnett does Stritch does Sondheim does Stritch.
@leisuresuitmikey In what alternate universe would some fool claim that Burnett is NOT a singer?
One I don't want to live in
Sing it, don’t talk it.
