The 3 of them performed this song together on Dolly's show in 1976. They later collaborated together on a few albums. The first Trio album from 1987 is great & showcases the lovely voices of these talented ladies. Lots of great songs such as "To Know Him Is To Love Him", "Telling Me Lies", "Those Memories Of You", "Wildflowers" etc. They did a 2nd album Trio II in 1999. It also has many hit songs such as "After The Goldrush", "Do I Ever Cross Your Mind", "Feels Like Home" etc.

This song is about a mother going to a prison to visit her son; "She told the warden how much she loved him, it did not matter what he had done." Then the mother died. 😪 Beautiful song. Emmylou Harris is also a fabulous singer. Check our her song: "Boulder to Birmingham" written for her late singing partner Gram Parsons.

Linda, Dolly too, was always supremely confident in her ability and unwilling to be stuck in a narrow slot. Even as she was working her way forward towards her biggest success as the queen of 70's rock her albums where full of songs from different genres and eras. Once she was on top her label wanted her to stick to the sound that had put her there but she refused continuing to push in new directions.
These three have been friends for decades and have all contributed backing vocals on each other's albums and had wanted to collaborate for a long time. They all however were at different labels with many commitments so it took almost 20 years to finally be able to bring their Trio project to fruition.

This was on Dolly's TV show (1976). The Sweetest Gift was on Linda's record with Emmylou Harris doing harmony vocals. The whole show was the three singing together or individually. They tried for 10 years to put of the first Trio album. They weren't able to tour together but had a few TV performances including Dolly's show in 1987. Trio II came out in 1999.

In 1983, Linda Ronstadt, at the height of her pop/rock phase of her career, decided to record an album of old jazz standards, "What's New". The orchestra was conducted by Nelson Riddle, famed for his collaborations with Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald and many others. It became a big hit and she collaborated with Riddle on 2 other pop standard albums, "Lush Life" and "Sentimental". After the success of these albums by Linda Ronstadt, more rock acts recorded standards from the Great American Songbook, most notable among them was Rod Stewart.

Linda sang rock, pop, country and even light opera. She sang on Broadway in Pirates of Penzance. Dolly has written now over 4000 songs. She has done some amazing movies, and is of course a great singer. Emmylou has had lots of hits and has written some of them as well. She is probably the most sought after harmony singer ever. Everybody wants to have her on their records. Oh and Linda has done several albums entirely in Spanish. She has Mexican heritage on her dad's side. Here is another video of Emmylou Harris singing with Gillian Welch and Allison Krausse. It's a song they sang in the movie score for Man of Constant Sorrow. I believe it was written for the movie by Gillian (she is in the middle). Enjoy. czcams.com/video/94h2L9oBOHM/video.html

You hit the nail right on the head when you said this is what people wanna see and the best thing about that era is that they could put egos aside and just let the music be the star there are so many recording from the 70s where people are doing background vocals or harmony vocals and it’s an uncredited vocal you look at the liner notes and you can’t even tell that that person was on the album they wanted no credit necessarily but when you did your research you found out really that was so and so‘s voice on that song like Mick Jagger is the harmony vocal on Carly Simons your so vain and Upton uncredited vocal but it’s absolutely Mick Jagger . There’s a fantastic version of this song you just listen to on Linda’s album Prisoner In Disguise and it’s just her and Emmylou in that recording and you really get to hear Emmylou beautifully in that song but I think the best song with just Linda and Emmylou is the country classic I can’t help it if I’m still in love with you which was on Linda‘s album dark end of the street her and Emmylou sound phenomenal on that together

You mentioned the lack of ego as more typically seen today, and with regard that, this song had been recorded by Emmylou and Linda on one of Linda's albums, and when they both appeared on Dolly's TV show, Dolly asked if they could all sing it together. Though beautiful, adding Dolly's vocals made it sound very different from Emmy and Linda's original record version. I could easily see a "current" artist not wanting to do anything that would make a song sound any "different" from their recording (and even if they did want to do so, I could see their agent, publicist or manager urging them not to do so, because the reason they were doing that TV appearance was to promote the record). But here, these three ladies agreed to doing something special and unique, just by virtue of the fact that they were all present on that stage together. What they came up with was a beautiful one-of-a-kind performance. That was a lot more common back then.

This was an appearance on Dolly’s TV show in the early 70’s. Later, these same three iconic singers collaborated on two albums of beautiful songs. This song actually appeared on one of Linda’s earlier albums with just Emmylou singing backup. Linda did many duets over the years and did not let ego enter into any of them although she could overpower almost anyone’s voice if she had chosen to do so. Some of her greatest duets were with Aaron Neville and James Ingram. Her record company “geniuses” always wanted her to stick with the “winning formula” of releasing a rock/pop album and touring to promote it. She never allowed herself to be put in a box and the record company always got on board with her projects after they were giant successes and brought in millions for them. 🌺✌️

One day a mother went to a prison

She told the warden how much she loved him
It did not matter what he had done
She did not bring to him a parole or pardon

It was a halo bright sent down from heaven's light
The sweetest gift, a mother's smile
She left a smile you can remember
She's gone to heaven from heartaches free
Those walls around you could never change her
You were her baby and e'er will be
She did not bring to him a parole or pardon
She brought no silver, no pomp or style
It was a halo bright sent down from heaven's light
The sweetest gift, a mother's smile

She said the difference in skill was clearly evident.

Linda Ronstadt sold millions of albums during the seventies singing a blend of country rock/country/pop/oldies, etc. During the eighties when she decided to records albums of Big Band/Great American Song Book songs and subsequently Mariachi songs, she did so even though her record company objected. She felt that she had already spent years recording successful commercial albums which made a lot of money for her record company and had earned the right to record what she wanted to going forward. She sold millions of of Big Band/Great American Song Book and Mariachi albums as well. So she was vindicated.

It wasn't unusual in the 70s (or before) to have people get together and just sing together in harmony like that. Things are so ego-driven and individualistic today that it's hard to imagine, but it was common back then. This trio came about because the three of them were friends and randomly got together one evening when they happened to be in the same town, got together at one of their homes, and tried out some traditional country and gospel and folk songs together, and then they performed publicly together for the first time I think on this TV show in 1976. The three of them together would even have fame later as a group called The Trio in the 1980s and 1990s, selling lots of records of their harmonizing covers of traditional songs.

In my opinion mainstream culture is regressive. It's patriarchal and white dominant. I think that's why there's so many Subcultures. Because mainstream music is backwards reagan grampaland. You said "mainstream runs everything", indeed. The term "outlaw country" basically means more intelligent songs and free expression. So I think these 3 are sort of outlaw country artists. So are Willie Nelson, Steve Earle, Jason Isbell, Drive-by Truckers, Lucinda Williams. Maybe even Bonnie Raitt. And John Prine!... Peace y'all.

Yes...you can tell their voices apart in the harmonies. These days everyone basically sounds the same. Too perfect...equals garbage.
