- Who is the best singer?
00:00 Maria Callas (1923-1977)
00:14 Ghena Dimitrova (1941-2005)
00:25 Germana Di Giulio (1910-1981)
00:39 Rosa Ponselle (1897-1981)
00:53 Zinka Milanov (1906-1989)
01:05 Leonie Rysanek (1926-1998)
01:19 Birgit Nilsson (1918-2005)
01:30 Montserrat Caballé (1933-2018)
01:43 Gencer (1928-2008)
01:58 Renata Tebaldi (1922-2004)
Unfair for Callas who you don’t play her at her peak! The 1952 Cetra recording! But still in 1974 she was the best!
I agree!
this is Callas ......and nobody can challenge her
the worst callas against the best of the others... so unfair.
These comparisons often don't take into consideration the age and when in the career the artist sang what is posted , so it depends what the poster decided to use as a comparison, they do it with tenors a lot, and often pick a great Studio recording of a singer compared to a live recording of another singer on a bad night! Whether it's intentional or not I don't know, but often these comparisons are not on even playing fields, so not a good comparisons no matter what singers are being compared, IMO.
Then go and listen to Tebaldi's first recording of this aria (1957)...
CALLAS AND MILANOV!
Callas, Rysanek and Caballe. No one was bad.
My ranking is very similar to the order in the video, from the best to the worst (except I’d probably put Leyla Gencer a bit earlier, maybe right after Leonie Rysanek).
Oh boy, "best comparison ever" was a little bit too much for this one... I'll go for Tebaldi and Callas even in her late recording.
Renata Tebaldi!! Просто ВАУ!!!Z.Milanov-тоже очень хороша!
Manca forse la più grande Gianna Arrangi Lombardi
Zinka, Rosa… One more beautifulthan the other🥲
La Tebaldi is my favorite! She was Gioconda. The way she launches into the word is spine tingling. Where are Destin and Suliotis' versions????
I agree with you. A truly excellent performance. I love these artists, but I missed them. I will be more careful for other videos.
1. Callas 2. Rysanek 3. Ponselle 4. Nilsson. Too bad you left out Eileen Farrell. She would be #2.
Tebaldi.... sontuosa Gioconda ...
Great voices, but Ponselle is Gioconda.
Bella voce ma inespressiva.
Milanov. Milanov. Milanov
Love her, especially Gioconda, as Richard Tucker once mentioned , he really enjoyed singing the role with her and in 1946 was singing Enzo at the Met. (with Milanov's Gioconda, his first Enzo was with Stella Roman in 1945) much later, the 1959 Met. Gioconda Brdcst. with them 13 years later was probably Tucker's best Version and Zinka then in her early 50's did it justice again. Richard Tucker once told me "Milanov was our Prima Donna"
Callas, senza neanche scomodare le registrazioni del 52 e del 59
Zinka!
