Unbelievable balance. Honest as well. The question is, could Messi play on those rubbish pitches and survive the likes of Harris and Hunter trying to put you in row z. As well as getting wrecked and shagging a couple Miss World's the night before.

Something to remember! Every professional game Lionel has played has been recorded. It's estimated that less than 5% of Best's games are on film. There's so much of George Best's skills that only the live attendance were lucky enough to see.
Excellent point Paul. I spoke recently to a man who when he was a boy saw Best mesmerise the crowd at a packed Molineux. He said he and his friends were down at pitch level and has never forgotten seeing Best dancing and swaying away from tackles . No TV exists of that game but this bloke remembers the sheer joy of watching the incomparable genius of Best as he taunted and tantalised the Wolves defence.
I've been saying exactly the same whenever the issue of greatest footballer comes up. What wonderful footie treasures must sit only in the memories of those fans present at the 95% unfilmed games graced by the soccer legend that is George Best. In an era when defenders could actually tackle, his ability to ride crushing challenges with skilful guile and stunning acceleration makes him in my mind the best there has been!
TOTALLY AGREE ...AND GEORGE DID IT WITH BOTH FEET IN MY HUMBLE OPINION HE WAS THE MOST COMPLETE FOOTBALLER COULD PLAY ANYWHERE ON THE PITCH COULD TACKLE DRIBBLE HEAD VISION PASSING HE HAD EVERYTHING
I respect what you said. Even though there's so many questions like what if George Best was at his prime today, Messi would be worried. But thanks for sharing.
He saw Cristiano Ronaldo play at his Debut for Manchester United and he was speechless. Best said it's the first time it felt like a compliment when people claimed once again there's a new George Best in football.
@@PatoNani18 it had more to do with his all round game and his potential. Cristiano is not in Best's league when it comes to dribbling though, as good as he is
@@Leon_Rojas , what he did on mud heap fields, with opponents who's sole aim was to take him out was a miracle, on today's carpet pitches where if you touch someone it's a freekick, George would have taken it all to a new level. Maverick player.
Imagine what Best could have done if he had played on surfaces as smooth and perfect as today's pitches instead of the plowed muddy fields he played on in the 70s.
I'm old enough to have actually seen George Best play live and remember well the era in which he played and to compare Best with Messi is rather like comparing a Bach Concerto with a Mozart Concerto. In other words, they were/are both so good that comparisons are pointless. Furthermore, Best played at a time when it was impossible for the world's best players to gravitate towards a handful of elite clubs in Europe. Not only were there restrictions on the number of foreign players that could be represented at club level in most countries but the financial incentives weren't there either. Best was considered by far the best player playing in the Football League at the time England won the World Cup in 1966 but because he was from Northern Ireland he never played in a major tournament himself. The game may be far more tactical nowadays, and have no end of sports psychologists and dieticians, but how many of todays' players are actually technically better than Best was? Very few, if any. His dribbling skills were legendary because he was so two-footed the poor defenders never knew what to expect from him. The other thing he shares with Messi is every defender's nightmare - lightning acceleration, a sudden burst of speed that took him past defenders so easily (including the then England captain Bobby Moore, in one clip from this vid, who was considered one of the world's best defenders at the time). How would Best have fared against some of the well-drilled defences of today? No worse than anyone else, and in a team set up for counter attacking he would have been as devastating now as he was then. Finally, just like to say how great the vid was. So good to see two of the all time greats at the top of their game.
Well, both are very good, obviously. But after watching the video, I cannot help but think George Best was the better dribbler. So, for me, George Best was the world's greatest footballer.
Both incredible players but as a kid going to watch George Best play was like Christmas, birthday & New Year wrapped into one - such excitement and anticipation - even away fans got excited when Besty was on the ball - great memories.
He was the best in the world for about 4 years until 'outside interests' distracted him. In those days cameras were not at all the games as they are now. I remember him playing at Southampton one evening in a league game, (1969 I think) and no one got near him that night. He scored a fabulous goal from outside the box into the top corner. Ended 3-0 If I remember rightly, when Saints played at the old Dell stadium. A girl from my class at school ran on the pitch and got his autograph and then managed to get back into the crowd chased by three stewards. She proudly showed his autograph in class ! Great days, glad I was around to witness them !
Yep...Totally agree. I made a comment here some time back that only a tiny fraction of George's goals and skills were ever caught on footage. The TV coverage simply wasn't there back in the 60's. So many fantastic George Best moments were only seen by the live attendance. He was a footballing genius.
100 Percent true Paul, i have just posted a comment a few minutes ago similar to your own post. You had to be around at that time to have seen George Best to realize how great he was. And for those of us who saw him play we witnessed a footballing genuis. Modern day fans think the defenders back then were poor which is nonsence, i'll tell you this most of todays so called overated modern day stars wouldn't have lasted 10 mins with Harris, Smith, Hunter and the rest of them.
You have sit back and enjoy these two gifted players. George best played on surfaces nowhere near as good as Messi had under him. So his skills are more incredible as far as I'm concerned. Could you imagine George best playing in the same conditions as Messi? George was one of a kind.
@ Andrew Johnson - This "pitches weren't as good back then" argument is stupid. People seem to think Best played on cow paddocks and the other players played on silk carpets! It was the same for EVERY player on the field, including the defenders and midfielders. They were impeded just as much. The pitches were as much a help to Best as they were a hindrance.
@@daleviker5884 You have obviously never played on those type of pitches. I think you are right on they were more helpful to defenders the sliding tackle was their best weapon.
Once he had the opportunity to play in ugly fields in Copa América Brazil 2019 and he complained about the grass. Btw he had a crappy performance in the tournament only scoring a penalty kick. Lamest choker ever
I am actually lucky and privileged to have seen both playing in their heyday . I saw Best playing in 1966 and later ; I saw Messi play in 2008 and 2012 . Both possess(ed ) God given talent . I hate comparing eras as It's futile . What I will say is that whilst both were great entertainers , Messi was much more focused and consistent than Best , who could be unplayable at times ( NI v Scotland , Belfast 1967 ) but could also be frustrating to watch when off form . We should just cherish these 2 footballing geniuses .
Well from this montage alone, Best is the outstanding winner. None of the Messi clips ended in goals apart from the last one. Ronaldinho was my favourite. He played for fun like George Best taunting his opponents with his ridiculous skills then hugging them and laughing together at the absurdity of it. He took his carefree mindset of playing bare footed in the streets in Brazil as a kid to the worlds biggest games as an adult and never changed. That’s why the people love him.
George Best is a football genius.. Messi is a great player, amongst the best there have ever been, however put him in a farmer's field and give him a ball and a pair of boots from the 60s and I'm pretty sure you'll find that he will be in Georgie's shadow... Reverse the scenario to today and the modern era and George best without doubt would be even better than the genius he was back then, George best in my eyes is the world's greatest player ever... Best is Best... I only wish I was 20 years older so I could watch him play live... Absolute legend!!! Messi is astonishing too, but best is best Thanks for the video.. really enjoyed it
Thank you. And I've said it before, Best plays in bad conditions and he was always hanged over because of alcohol and partying the night before the games. So imagine the skills he would pull off today.

The ability of both players to ride countless challenges and still emerge with the ball is uncanny! Taking into account the eras in which they played and given the improved facilities plus rule changes in the modern game that favour attacking play, I consider GB has the edge on Messi... but it's a close call.
I thought I was agreeing with you Keith! In any event, what a joy it would be to have GB perform his skills in this modern era of non-contact play and impeccable facilities&equipment.
With all respect to Messi I have to claim that he never terrorized rival defense in such a manner as George did. George Best remains the best dribbler in world football history. IMHO.
@G Galeno I remember Mane. He was a great dribbler and mostly played on the right wing and used practically only one dummy while Best could shake-n-bake several defenders at once inside the penalty area.
Ilham Mirzoev I’ve never seen best play but I don’t think he was a better dribbler than Messi. My favorite player of all time is maradona, now he was a good player and really good dribbler. This from a question and answer piece with Bobby Charlton: "During your playing days at Manchester United, you used to take inswinging right-footed corners from the left and inswinging left-footed corners from the right. So are you left-footed or right-footed? And does it dismay you to see woefully one-footed players plying their trade today? @@peterdowney1492 Hi Peter, there is a documentary on United in the 50s, and 60s about Jimmy Murphy ( specifically, I think) which includes Bobby Charlton saying on camera that the first thing that happened when he signed for United at age 15 was that Jimmy Murphy had him kicking the ball against the big wall at the back of the Stretford End, left foot, right foot, literally for hours, and that there was two foot dribbling and shooting practise at every training session at the Cliff which is what perfected his two-footed ability. Later, Best said Murphy did the same with him, notwithstanding that he already shot, dribbled and tackled with both feet and he said that his 'genius' relied upon that 'finishing school'. I see the article you refer to, but I must say that I have often known Charlton to say contradictory things in different interviews, and that's particularly true of his opinions about Best.
Definitely a lot of comparisons between the 2 of them. Tho imagine Best playing on the perfect pitches nowadays and with a ball that didn’t weigh so heavy. Also, imagine how good Best would of been if he had the same fitness regimes of today and kept away from the demon drink!

George best proved that he was above any other player. For example the final against benfica, Eusebio was one the greatest players at the time along with Best. But best was the better man on the pitch.
Messi is a model professional, living healthily and staying out of trouble, the same cannot be said of Best who was the first British football superstar and didn't have the help and guidance that young players have today. The reason he didn't have that help was that no-one had ever been front page news as well as back page in the way that George was. We acknowledge that pitches, tackling, diet, training are all radically different now than they were in Best's day. We know that Best could walk the walk on ploughed fields with real hardmen trying to decapitate him as he ran past them laughing all on a diet of vodka and chips. peas and gravy! The only real way to compare them is to break the game down into skill sets, mark them all out of 10 and then compare. So you have passing, tackling, shooting, heading, pace, dribbling, left foot, right foot, balance, bravery, crossing, goal scoring, etc This is where I believe you will find that Best is the greatest player of all time. He was superior to Messi in tackling, heading, being two footed, and bravery. Then you can argue the toss over the rest. You have to give Messi the left foot category, in which case you have to give George the right foot category. I can't separate them in dribbling or goal scoring although I'd probably give Messi the edge on shooting, free kicks etc and longevity of career!! But you get my drift. It's only by breaking the game down into skill sets that you can really compare the two and even that's not perfect but in doing so it becomes clear to me that George is the greatest player who ever lived although he might not have been if Duncan Edwards had not been killed as a 21 yr old!!
For me Best's hellraising only adds to his legend- much more of a character than Messi or most other footballers (certainly out of the usually sterile outstanding players). Probably why I liked Cruyff so much as well.
@NMA 55 NIDHIN JOBI Why? Because he didn't play in your time? Or bcs he didn't have the media behind his back for 10 years? Is it because he doesn't have 3 champions? RIP
Imagine best playing 60 games a season or with more improved technology where every manager knows your weakness he would have problems for sure so my opinion Messi level terms with best
Thats a fallacy - yes they did have to play on boggy pitches on occasions but the pitch at Southern League Guildford in the late 60s could be really good but could also be bad, these days the pitches are consistently good, so players in Best's era did regulalry play on good pitches especially at the start of the season.I would agree defenders got away with more but today's defenders are fitter and stronger than in Best's day.
@ YNWA - yes pitches are better these days but they're better for ALL players on the field, not just George Best. The bad pitches of the 1960s hindered defenders every bit as much as attackers. Best never faced anything like the organized defenses of today. Defenders in those days tried hacking in tackles because they had nothing else to offer.
I saw George Best live. He stood on the wing waiting for the ball and when it came to him NO ONE could get it off him. The word genius is overused but for me that's what he was. Only two players have ever got me on the edge of my seat: Maradona and George Best.

That single skill at 2:16 shows why George Best was better and with the technology of the ball, boots and pitch and how hard the tackles in those days players of today could not do it they are way to soft and football in England has always been harder than anywhere on earth. @ Frank Byrne I guess it must have rained every day in England in the 1960s and 1970s then, because according to old timers on here, Best apparently only ever played in the mud. :-) Nostalgia is great, it enables us to only remember what we want to. It enables us to forget that Best's opponents were playing on the same pitches too. It enables us to forget that defenders in those days had no organization and all they knew was sticking a leg out. It enables us to forget that English football of those days wasn't the world game it is now, and that Best didn't have to compete with midfielders and defenders from Brazil. France, Germany, Italy, Holland etc. every week. Best competed against only British players, so the pool of players he faced every week was much shallower than it is today. And there were fewer games. For eg Best played only 34 games in Europe, which in those days meant a handful of big games and a lot of rubbish. A player like Messi today has had to play 150+ games and regular opponents like Bayern, Juventus, the English Big 6, PSG etc are all full of world class players. Best was a great player, but if people take off the nostalgia glasses, he played in a much less competitive era than today.
To put it in a few words, George Best was a skinny 21 year old, almost an unknown to the rest of the world when he destroyed the best team in Europe at the time Benfica with one of the best players in the world then Eusebio , 4-1 single handed , and was given the Cup for the European player of the year. He could decide a match all by himself, he never won a world cup because he was loyal to his Northern Ireland, he lead their team and won beautiful games single handed, with all due respect , neither Messi nor CR7 could win a world cup although they got there, George would have put an end to any game by himself in his prime. I spent my money on birds, booze and fast cars, the rest I just squandered. This was his lifestyle. But as footballer he was like no other. How he beats Messi and CR7--his speed on those farmer's fields, the sixties boots, the balance, the fearless moves, the sudden surge in speed with a sudden change of direction , watch a game where he scored a goal with his back to the goalkeeper. They once asked Lev Yashin the Russian goalkeeper who is considered to be the best in history, who is one player you fear, and he answered the Northern Ireland young George Best, he can make a fool of the best goalkeepers, and if the black spider Yashin who played against every great player of the time including Pele, said Best was the one he fears then----.
Lets not also not forget what he did for Giggs, when Giggs was starting to shine the media was all 'the new George best, the new George Best' But Bestie announced that Giggs wasn't the new George Best but he was the first Ryan Giggs, that must have taken the whole weight of Giggsy's young shoulders.
Well said, I feel like he enjoyed getting drunk and going out on dates than playing on a muddy field but imagine if he played today with so much motivation and new things to wear and to play on a good field. He would have been even more better.
Best had a beautiful balletic, swan like style, while dribbling at full tilt, similar to Cruyff & Laudrup, who also possessed, those aesthetic elegance, while dribbling at full tilt. Messi, switch's of sudden turns in literally no space, while dribbling at full tilt, is something I've never seen before. Messi plays in an era of better organized, shaped defence's, with midfield pressing, which accords the player in possession of the ball a lot more restricted space & time on the ball than in Best era.
Also if best faced off the defenders today it will be a breeze for him because back then defenders were harsh with their tackles so just imagine how best won't feel pain if the defenders try to do that today.
Volamber Defence's are more organised today, coupled with high intensity midfield press & faster, more athletic defenders & midfielders. The player on the ball today, as less space to work his magic than in Best days. Look at the defensive shapes on the Messi clips vs the defensive shapes on the Best clips. Today, you have straight back lines, with pressing midfielders in front. Messi had drill down through all that lot, while with the defenses in the Best clips. The defense is disorganised by modern standards, coupled with a lack off midfield press. Best would have his work cut out more today, to drill through the opposition & am not sure if it would be a " breeze " for him, as you say.
@@johnpacino007 well I'm not saying that back then when george used to play it was a better play styles I'm just saying today you have a lot of actors like neymar that dive all because of a little tap or something. But I understand messi shows the perfect performance in todays game. We're just left to wonder what it would be like if george was playing in his actual prime in todays game since I believe his prime days were just getting started. He could have accomplished even more if he didn't let bad habits get the better of him.
Volamber This video. Messi vs No Space, highlights the points I've made: czcams.com/video/d9VAQ5oJOzE/video.html Messi ground control of the ball at top notch speed, in compressed zones, is beyond any player I've seen. He drills unseen wormholes around defenders & disappears like Harry Houdini! Regarding Best. His dribbling was as good as Maradona & at times even better, because of his greater ambidextrous usage of feet, compared to Maradona's one-footedness & greater agility .
@@johnpacino007 good example. I honestly never complained about who's better I just thought of the idea of making this video one day and it made me appreciate football even more. Every generation of players in the past helped shape the game to what it is today.
Nothing clever about playing football when you're drunk and I doubt Messi would even think of it. And any manager who sent him out to play knowing he was drunk should be ashamed. That's bringing the game into disrepute.
@@Space_Wanderer__ He can be compared to Messi on his footballing skills alone, he may even have been better. But his lifestyle off field was a total shambles. He was always getting wasted and going missing. He frequently let his club, his team mates and the fans down. He once appeared on tv totally drunk and told the interviewer he liked to " screw " in his spare time. I respect his talent on the pitch but not his off field behaviour.
Messi for me is the greatest player of the modern era but if you watch all of those videos George Best actually finishes his runs with a goal on so many occasions despite shocking surfaces and was up against ruthless defenders with little protection from referees . Draw your own conclusions?
@ Steve Carter - Naturally Best scores a lot of goals in those videos because you are watching highlights. Geez. Every second that Messi plays is watched by hundreds of millions. Only a few of Best's games were recorded, and most of what's left is just highlights. I watched the game back then so I saw him as often as anyone could on TV. He played a lot of ordinary games as well that are conveniently forgotten nowadays.

Excellent point Paul. I spoke recently to a man who when he was a boy saw Best mesmerise the crowd at a packed Molineux. @@sumansarkar8136 If Best had been English we'd never have heard of Pele
So good to see two of the all time greats at the top of their game.
gdsongwriter Thanks for sharing your experience! He was an excellent player with great dribbling. If only we could see him play today.
I dont know about the being considered best player in 66.There was a certain jimmy Greaves playing at that time.

I hate comparing eras as It's futile . Well from this montage alone, Best is the outstanding winner. None of the Messi clips ended in goals apart from the last one. Ronaldinho was my favourite. George best my footballl hero ,Two footed superb dribbler & a great header of the ball . When we collected football cards if you did not have George best it was not complete .
George best proved that he was above any other player. For example the final against benfica, Eusebio was one the greatest players at the time along with Best. But best was the better man on the pitch.
I'd love to see a "Messi reacts to George Best highlights" video - Wouldn't that be the coolest thing ever!
He could sit people on their arses by raising an eyebrow, most unique player I ever did see.
Bluenose
So you have passing, tackling, shooting, heading, pace, dribbling, left foot, right foot, balance, bravery, crossing, goal scoring, etc
This is where I believe you will find that Best is the greatest player of all time.
Absolutely Spot on sir!!!
@AMA 55 NIDHIN JOBI 🤣🤣🤣
@NMA 55 NIDHIN JOBI you're crazy dude lol Best did it before Maradona and Messi lol
@NMA 55 NIDHIN JOBI Why? Because he didn't play in your time? Or bcs he didn't have the media behind his back for 10 years? Is it because he doesn't have 3 champions? Or because he didn't prove himself against Getafe running through the field by himself against one of the worst teams if not the worst team of La Liga?
George Best was the original super star. The one that led the way for today's superstars. Skill level that today's star can only dream about. Still the best footballer I have seen live

RIP

Messi played in an amazing Barcelona team. When Messi played for Argentina he was nowhere near as good.
Messi is overrated and is not in the top 10 players of all time. Messi looked like a lower division player when he was in the world cup final against Germany.

@@bighands69 Idiot. Messi was player of the tournament in 2014 so having internet nobodies saying "he never performed" just tells you everything about social media. Messi's standing depends of Higuaín's performance.
That single skill at 2:16 shows why George Best was better and with the technology of the ball, boots and pitch and how hard the tackles in those days players of today could not do it they are way to soft and football in England has always been harder than anywhere on earth. And George Best used both feet and went through midfield and defenders like a hot knife going through butter and his speed nobody could keep up but Messi always using his left foot and players keeper up with him.
George Best made his his opponents look foolish as they missed their tackles and fell flat on their face. Best dribbled passed 3 or 4 players whereas Messi beat 2 or 3 on average.
I agree that george best is better however I also am aware that messi does dribble passed a lot of players like best. But best was in a generation that was harder which was a disadvantage because of the environment around and the equipment. Best was brilliant. Truly awesome.
Different players. Messi sets up players around him, Best did it all on his own. Honestly think Best was a better finisher with his footwork and killer instinct and was just as lethal of either foot which made him impossible to defend against. I think his talent would carry to the modern day game. Messi possibly a better all round player as Best was a pure striker where Messi can set up play from the midfield as well as score.
I give the edge to Best cause he was so unique. Noone came close to what Best could do, his dribbling skills and goal scoring talent is in comparable. The game could go for another 100 years and there won't be another Georgie Best.

Players like Ronaldo although fantastic had to rely on beating a defender by our running them, Best did it by sending them the wrong way several times consecutively. I saw him play several times and he was just magic. Compared to Messi well as someone has pointed out probably every one of messi's performances are captured on video so a 100% whereas George Best probably only 5% of his performances are captured. Nope for me having seen him there has been no better player in the world for beating defenders several times on a sixpence , than George. So to sum up.
1) we only have archived about 5% of georges performances
2) he played on pitches that wouldn't be allowed now
3) Defenders then were legally brutal
4)George played for NI so never graced a world cup
5) he left man united and top flight football aged 26, yes 26 .
He really was the best of all time
@ Lawrence Jenkins - "he did it by sending defenders the wrong way several times consecutively." Yet in never occurs to any of you to admit that it was much harder for defenders also on those same "muddy pitches"? To read all these posts from old ManU fans you'd think only Best had to play on poor pitches and that the opposing 11 were playing on carpet! People keep saying that Best would find it easier on today's pitches, and yes he would, but SO DO DEFENDERS.
Gorge BEST is BEST❤️
Lionel Messi is brilliant!....but he wouldn't have been able to control the ball on the muddy pitches that Best had to play on back in the day...George Best was a showman....
They once asked Lev Yashin the Russian goalkeeper who is considered to be the best in history, who is one player you fear, and he answered the Northern Ireland young George Best, he can make a fool of the best goalkeepers, and if the black spider Yashin who played against every great player of the time including Pele, said Best was the one he fears then----.
where did you hear that Yashin said Best was the player he feared most?
Lets not also not forget what he did for Giggs, when Giggs was starting to shine the media was all 'the new George best, the new George Best' But Bestie announced that Giggs wasn't the new George Best but he was the first Ryan Giggs, that must have taken the whole weight of Giggsy's young shoulders.
As a Liverpool fan I have to give the greatest ever to George best the state of them pitches he played on no one comes close to him legend
Messi has been world class for longer than Best was, but Best at his highest peak was a more effective player.
Well said, I feel like he enjoyed getting drunk and going out on dates than playing on a muddy field but imagine if he played today with so much motivation and new things to wear and to play on a good field. He would have been even more better.
@@Leon_Rojas He would have been insane in modern football.. a tougher version of Neymar with more hunger
