Do You Really Need to Get Your Wisdom Teeth Pulled?

  • Wisdom teeth come out between the ages of 12 to 25, and some doctors recommend having them removed. But is it necessary? Do we really need to get our wisdom teeth pulled?
    In some cases, there is absolutely no need to remove your wisdom teeth. If they don’t interfere with the normal functioning of neighboring teeth, it means that your mouth is big enough to accommodate all four of your wisdom teeth. The same is true if they’re straight and not at an angle to their neighbors, which can create hard-to-reach places for bacteria to grow.
    If there isn't enough space in the mouth and all adjacent teeth are already snug as it is, the erupting wisdom tooth brings the risk of damaging the nearby teeth. In this case, it’ll cause pain in your whole mouth and problems with chewing! Poor oral hygiene because of stuck food in wisdom teeth that didn’t’ fully come in can cause a large buildup of bacteria, which can lead to even more problems like oral cavity diseases.
    Most dentists agree that the younger you are when you have your wisdom teeth removed, the better. After you turn 25, all the bone tissues have formed completely. This means that the teeth are more difficult to remove, and the surrounding tissues heal more slowly.
    After you’ve had your wisdom teeth removed, the best post-op diet for you is milkshakes and ice cream. These foods are soft and cold, which is good because it soothes the pain.

    SUMMARY
    -You don’t need to remove healthy fully grown wisdom teeth that stand straight and don’t interfere with the normal functioning of neighboring teeth.
    -In case they’re completely hidden under the gums and can’t erupt through the surface, didn't fully come in and there isn't enough space in the mouth and all adjacent teeth are already snug as it is, the erupting wisdom tooth brings the risk of damaging the nearby teeth. You should also remove wisdom teeth if tumors have formed, there’s inflammation in the gums and tooth decay.
    -There's nothing wrong with keeping your wisdom teeth if you regularly visit a dentist and get x-rays of your jaw. In this case, you can learn about a potential problem, like improper wisdom tooth growth.
    -After the surgery, exercise the jaw by opening and closing your mouth. Eat soft foods like soup, pasta, mashed potatoes and so on. Drink lots of liquids. Start brushing your teeth only the next day after the surgery. Do it very delicately.
    -Do not smoke, don’t be too active and harsh while rinsing your mouth. Do not eat sticky or hard food. It can disturb or scratch your wound. Do not drink through a straw.
    -35% of people are born without wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth are the only teeth that aren't formed in the womb.

    My mom’s is a dentist (short term) so here’s the real answer.
    Every person is different. If your mouth is to crowded with teeth you SHOULD get them out because it can cause pain and other symptoms similar. However, if your mouth is not very crowded you probably don’t have to get them out. Although I’m not a professional that’s basically the most straight forward answer. I got mine out recently and you just have to take good care of your mouth while it’s recovering so you don’t get an infection. Have a good day :)

      Don't be, depending how your wisdom teeth are growing you could have it done under general anesthetic. Mine were a pain in the bum and needed over half an hour to have just the bottom ones out so I'm glad I had GA - it made the whole process stress free for me and today is 4 days after the surgery and to be honest I only had 1 day of bad pain but I took 500mg paracetamol + 400mg ibuprforen and it worked well for me. After it's definitely more of discomfort than pain. Also it's better to just watch animation of how it's done, don't look at the videos, I'm looking at them now because I'm curious but I wouldn't have dared to do it before the surgery, you would just stress yourself out and there's no need for that.

    It was a traumatic experience because my dentist was careless and had heavy hands. I'm actually surprised that almost everyone here who had gone through the surgery was put to sleep. I was wide awake, and it was pretty painful. Few anesthesia was injected on me but those were not enough that I could still feel pain...pretty much actually.

      I am a dentist and it's not that how you think each patient is different we can't give general anesthesia to everyone we have to measure the benefits and the consequences, we have to be careful with general anesthesia, just imagine you never wake up after a general anesthesia😂, so local anesthesia for dental problems are much used and they are less complicated and more useful for both doctor and the patient

    If your wisdom teeth are impacted, it’s recommended to get them removed for many reasons. If not, you take the chance of them growing in, hitting other teeth, & causing cavities. Happened to my brother. He had to get 5 teeth moved, all 4 wisdom teeth plus another tooth that a wisdom tooth dug into causing a major cavity. It also happened with one of his front teeth, caused crowding & it caused another cavity. Mind you this happened in 6 months. He was fine one checkup, not the next. His dentist was shocked & said because I’m his sister it could happen to me. So I got mind removed before they broke through my gums. Plus I have braces so I didn’t want them growing in & wasting all my money.

    Yep! I had all four removed the same day when I was 15 years old [circa 1967]. It took 6 weeks to really recover and the ''hole'' left in my gums remained for a year. It was a very miserable operation and the dentist used only Novocaine (no laughing gas or assisted sleeping). I remember the Xrays still to this day and your depictions were spot on. Two of my wteeth were at a 45 degree angle towards me permanent molars and the other two were growing into the molars at a 90 degree angle. I was convinced then and I am now that the surgery was the best thing. Of note is I still to this day know how my mother paid for the surgery. We were dirt poor, my dad died two years previous. We had no car and a small Social Security check came in each month. Still, she got it down and I am the better [and wiser, pardon the pun :) ] for it.

  • @tonylelavallois5950
    @tonylelavallois5950 Před 6 lety +9

    I removed my four wisdom teeth in a single day 2 years ago . Trust me it isn't as bad as it looks. I didn't even have general anesthesia, only a local anesthesia. I had to force my mouth open the whole time while they were doing it. Surprisingly, I didn't feel any pain (Even when they were cutting my gum and removing it). The only thing I felt is them touching my teeth ( It's as if your pressing on it). Thus, don't worry about the pain. You won't feel anything. The only thing that was a little unpleasant is that they were using non stop this water flosser in my mouth while cutting my gum and using anesthesia. It was constantly going in the back of my throat, so I always had to swallow the liquid ( which was water, blood and anesthesia). They kept asking me to not swallow it, but I had no choice ( it was this or getting choked). That was the only thing unpleasant about the wisdom tooth removal. In short, don't worry. It's not a big deal ( no pain, just a little unpleasant).
    The most unpleasant part is after the operation. Of course, they gave me codeine and antibiotics so I wouldn't feel any pain while it was recovering and avoid any infections. However, I could only open my mouth a little ( I was scared that if I opened it too much, the wounds would reopen). So I could only eat soft food. It was like this for 4 or 5 days. Afterwards, I could open it a little more and eat a bigger variety of food. It went on like this for maybe 2 or 3 weeks until my full recovery. In short, this whole thing about wisdom tooth removal isn't that scary. It isn't that painful. It was just annoying the fact that I couldn't open my mouth completely at the beginning.

      18 here.
      My little 15 year old sister just got hers taken out about 4ish days ago.
      I haven’t had the “pleasure” to get mine out yet and I’ve been completely obsessing over wisdom teeth after my sister’s teeth got removed.
      I’m not 100% sure, but I looked around my mouth just to be wary about it and I think I felt one wisdom tooth at the very back of my mouth on the left side.
      Pray for me. ;-;

    I never got mine pulled they grew straight and don't hurt, so I'm good I wouldn't want to get them pulled anyway.

    My sister got her wisdom tooth removed on Wednesday. She's still in pain. Everytime she wakes up, the pain gets worse and pain killers doesn't work.
