    Dave Darcy, the shooter producer of MAD TV and Editor at Large of Australian Adventure Bike Magazine buys a 2023 Heritage edition Husqvarna TE 501 with the intent on building a cracking adventure mount.
    In this first episode Dave discusses why he chose the Husky 501, his intended development path to convert it for adventure and picks up the bike from Chris Watson Motorcycles and discusses with Chris the best way forward. Chris provides a number of valuable pointers.
    In Episode 2, out in the coming weeks Dave will ride the bike in the dirt and on the road before comparing it with his own Husqvarna 701 that is already set up for adventure and has a proven track record for doing the tough the stuff.
    Episode three and four will focus on the build and suspension modifications to account for the changes in weight and movement of centre of gravity forward.
    The bike will then feature in a number of movie length adventure movies.

    The rear rack on the bike being serviced comes from True North Motos out of Tacoma, Washington USA. I have one on my 501 and it works a treat. Did 11 days on the Idaho BDR back in August carrying Mosko Moto 40s with no problems.

    My wife and I have purchased one each of the 2022 model. So far have 1500 kms on them and love them. Handlebar vibes really do suck until you add Barkbuster bar ends, they absolutely eat the vibes! Have 15 litre Acerbic, Phoenix comfort seat, Nomad ADV rally towers, larger clutch covers and AXP plastic bash plates. Running 15/48 gearing. These bikes make our last bikes, KTM 1090 and BMW Sertao, feel like Mack trucks on TWO wheels.
    Look forward to the rest of the build 🤙

    They're cracking bikes Dave, had a ton of hours on a 17 KTM 450 with soft luggage and zero mechanical issues. Oil changes can be greatly extended as long as you're not hard on the clutch, keep the air filter clean and don't get the engine super hot. Maybe keep an eye on that composite rear subframe overtime with luggage on but other than that you should be sweet. Put a Hann cush on mine after 5k or so just for peace of mind but I didn't have any gearbox issues prior to that over loads of road miles. Wish folks wouldn't slate KTM reliability, these big 4 strokes are hard as nails and issues normally come down to lack of basic maintenance . Hope you enjoy mate, she's a ripper!

    • @MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV
      @MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV  Před rokem

      Thanks Neil. There is a LOT of fuss over oil changes but like you said, you do those things, and maybe extend the clutch cover for a further 300 mm of oil and you should be able to safely more than double service interval for oil.

    Very interesting "Mate" (I'm from the US and have always found that endearing term a little awkward ;) )! I have/have had many different bikes. I currently have a '21 TE 300, an '18 FE501, a '23 FE450, and a '20 790R. I just recently sold my '17 701 because it was so close to the 501 but not nearly as capable when the going gets tough. The narrower, lighter, and higher ground clearance of the 501 are practical advantages over the 701. I installed a Raid Garage tank to the 701 so it had extended range, but I run either a 3.4 gallon, or 4.5 gallon tank on the 501 (depending on the type of ride), and it gets better MPG (or KM per liter for those of you down under) so the 501 has similar range. The only real advantage I see of the 701 is the extended oil change intervals (and probably over-all engine life), lower RPMs on the long pavement stretches (I try to avoid them anyway), and the trellis frame if one wants to carry panniers. I don't use panniers (I like to have a hot shower and comfy bed, and I don't like how the bike handles with all the extra mass) so those are things that really fall to a low priority for me. In fact, I use the same GL Mojave bags on the 501 that I had for the 701 when doing extended trips. As for the highway miles, the 701 does not really offer anymore comfort than the 501 does...Which isn't much. In the group that I do most of my extended (multi day) rides, there were (7-8 ) 701s/690s. Now we are all riding 450/500/501. With these bikes one simply need not care what type of trail one uses to get from point A to B. The bike will not really be the limiting factor. Again, we are looking for ride challenges/quality, over camping on the trail experiences. In the Western US we have a lot more single track than what I have seen on your videos (I have seen many). The riding that I have seen you portray may be better suited to your 701, and maybe even larger ADV bikes.
    I feel that each of my bikes has it's own strong suit as it relates to what type of riding one does. The exception to that is the 501 & 450. I have not yet ridden the 450 and I bought it as an experiment to see if I might like it over the 501. While the jury has yet to even convene on that I don't think that they will be markedly different.
    As it relates to the tower, it seems as though you have made up your mind on that. While I like the look of a good tower (certainly over the likes of what you have on your 701), I don't see much more of an advantage than that of aesthetics. One can certainly upgrade the lights with very light weight, and high powered LEDs these days, and employing a helmet mounted one is FAR better as the light is always directed to here the rider is looking. Furthermore, I have enough room on my handlebars to fit (2) GPSs, and I could add a phone if I wanted to as well. If handlebar real estate is an issue, companies like MotoMinded, and Sicass (and I'm sure there are others as well) can help you there. I'm afraid that you will find the additional weight of the fuel (with your proposed bigger fuel tank), and said proposed tower, will make the bike feel noticeably heavier. Especially due to the additional weight being as high on the bike as it can possibly get.
    All that being said, it boils down to this...I can afford to buy almost any bike I want to, and I have owned, and therefore experienced, many. IF I had to choose just ONE it would definitely be the 450/500/501. It may not do everything as well as some of the other, more purpose built bikes, but it can do everything very well. Regardless, I enjoyed your video, and look forward to what you do next with your 501. Obviously we share a passion for the sport. Keep up the good work and feel free to reach out as I may be able to offer insights into your build.
    Cheers!!

      @@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV I love dirt bikes, and also love talking about them. I had a lot more to add but this medium has it's limits. I have heavily modified each of my bikes, and all mods are to make the bike more durable, better performing, more purpose oriented, and user friendly. "Bike builds" is the term you seem to be using for this, and suspension is one of the most significant mods one can make, in my opinion. I do all the bike work myself. I'm a bit honored to know that I have provided you with such a noteworthy response. Thanks for saying so. On my bucket list is riding in Australia and New Zealand!

    I’m at 17.000klms no Cush drive.
    Just changed clutch damper rubbers. (Bike already has Cush drive in clutch)
    Enough flex in knobby to not require Cush drive.
    Just don’t flog it on the black stuff.
    Adventure man cave tower is on my 500 exc.
    I put the denille s4 upgrade lights on. Still wasn’t impressed with lighting.
    Tower is strong and priced well.
    14/49 still cruise on 100k and punches hard in tight stuff.
    22k/1lt easy riding
    17k/1lt riding silly
    Seat concepts xl so good. Balance wheels.
    Funnel web filter. Do yourself a Huge favour. Must run oversize disc. Especially for VIC HIGH COUNTRY. Etc.
    1500k oil change ok.
    Just done leak test on engine. Came back at 8%. So 1500k oil change is proven 👍
    Cross country adventures foot pegs (brand) a must.
    Taco moto led blinker kit a must. Stegz pegz. MSc steering damper.
    Compression side of wp forks rubbish standard. Needs love in suspension. Best adventure bike. Ridden them all. I don’t carry anymore than 25kg on rear(re luggage).
    Fatty tire on front always. 120/100 rear.
    16psi front rear.

    I had my suspension reduced by 40 mm and a race tech kit in the front end to make it a conventional adjustment system. Had the ecu retuned by Rex in QLD for more mid range. Best front brake ever and kills every other bike on the dirt. 58 kg lighter than my old DR. Larger clutch cover and 2500 km oil changes no problem but I run 15/47 which is quite high gearing. Only complaint is the lousy air box sealing, would not cope with deep water. The True North Moto frame is great

  • @Auslife007

    Yewww good choice of bike Dave. I have a 2021 Fe501. Such a versatile bike. Only mods I've done is the Acerbis 15ltr tank which I get about 360kms and that's hard riding, double take mirrors so I can fold them down when Im riding single track, Haan Cush hub which is a noticeable difference on and off road when changing gears, wheel weights on the rear to remove the vibration on road, Kreiga overseat harness for attaching 18ltrs pannier bags.
    I have 5500km on mine, both adventure and pretty hard enduro single track and its been a dream. I do all my own servicing.
    TBH I think the tower you intend on putting on would be unnecessary weight and bulk. You don't want to be riding on dusk or dark anyway and would comprise your riding when riding single track. Id rather the wind when its hot. The only benefit to the tower would be long bitumen stretches in winter, in the dark but who wants to do that anyway. My Garmin Montana sits comfortably on the bars and doesn't get in the way. The only other benefit to the tower is that you would look super hard core "adventurey" which I hear makes guys ride like Toby Price....
    looking forward to watching the build unfold. Im in Newcastle, gods country for riding

I did a 7000km trip up through the Simpson desert etc and the tank started to rub on the valve cover causing it to leak..also left a gouge in the tank.. wasn't a big drama as I put some gasket sealant on it, and wedged something between the tank and the cover to avoid more rubbing. I replaced the valve cover gasket when I got home but thought it was worth a mention for something to keep an eye on as it's a pretty tight fit.

    My first offroad adventure bike i bought was a FE501 2014. Its the best (fastest) bike you can ride both on and off the road legally. The FE501 has a MAJOR achilles heel if you ride over logs and big rocks. No other bike have a rear suspension that stick out from the bottom of the frame to the swingarm. You cant slide the belly of the bike over logs, you will anchor that linkage on the log. Sadly, the owner who sold the FE501 to me had bought a FE250 instead because the FE501 was to much for him. What he didnt know about his FE250 was that it had a huge dent in the linkage where the rear shock connects. It was not his fault he just bought the bike and it had like 5h on it. He was the second owner.
    You can buy a linkage guard but they will never last more than a year if you ride technical stuff. I built my own from 4mm steel and it got bent very quickly. Sold my bike after 2 years, the maintenance costs was a little to expensive for my budget. I would rather recommend the KTM 500 EXC because it has no linkage sticking out asking for dents or damage.

    • @MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV
      @MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV  Před rokem

      Thanks for your input. I've have linkages on my 701 and other bikes and never had a problem.Occasionally it hits, very occasionally it gets hooked up particularly if my technique was poor. On this channel there are a couple of slo motion pieces of linkages, they are not proud when under correct load, it's more when you skull dragging the bike over something. Frankly, I'm not concerned if the linked piece gets a few dents.
      thanks for your thoughts.

    Any issues with the composite subframe? Seen a lot of them snap under fairly minimal stress. To me that's the main advantage of the KTM sticking with the (repairable) aluminium set up. I guess an external subrame / pannier rack set up could move the stress towards the main frame and mitigate the risk?

    The concept is very interesting but the tiny service interval of the 501 makes it a bit impractical for long range 'adventures' because every few days a service will be needed, unless you don't mind ignoring the manufacturer instructions.
    The 701 on the other hand has way longer service intervals, more power (on the road it does make a difference) and a bit more weight, but 701 is still no where near the weight of any ADV twin bike.

    • @MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV
      @MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV  Před rokem +1

    • @bigman-adv
      @bigman-adv Před rokem +1

      @@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV I will follow the next chapters.
      For service intervals 501 uses engine hours, 701 uses miles. It's the manufacturer recommendations and some people follow those instructions and are "hooked up".
      Per the 501 Service Manual every 15 engine hours ("operational hours") the oil has to be changed. The reason for that is obvious - it's a very powerful engine with a small engine oil capacity.
      If I ride in a week 5 hours every day then every 3 days I need to change oil. OK, let's make it once a week. It's insane for an ADV vehicle that is supposed to do RTW. Literally Round The World, not ride 1 or 2 days in the bushes.
      Can it be used for ADV? Sure, so can a Honda C90. There are KTM 500 riders as you mentioned. Either they are very good in servicing their vehicles, or they don't service them properly and then they get issues or they rely on luck.

    This should be fun. I bought the FE450 I think it's engine is a little racier but we'll find out. That is what they race here in Baja.
    Mike at Taco Moto says oil change interval should be 15-50 hours depending on how you ride. Also the 701 interval is 10,000k and it only holds .3-.4 liters more oil. So I believe the the recommendations are very conservative and made with racing in mind. ¡Have fun!

      Yeah Ross, so I have a 701, 690 and now the 501. In terms of oil I'm listening intently to the experts, but then again the people who've actually ridden them on round the world adventures certainly don't change the oil as per manual and haven't suffered any consequences. And I think the reason for that links up with what you see in your last point, the bikes aren't racing. For the most part they're loafing along on open miles, low engine temps, lots of air flow.
